Operation Christmas Child

On Thursday Week 1 of this term, the truck arrived from Samaritans Purse to collect the abundance of shoeboxes packed by our school community. Our Year 10 and 11 students packed and loaded the 422 boxes and were privileged to hear some stories of God’s providence through the gift of a shoebox.

As the school coordinator, I am both humbled and overwhelmed by the generosity of our school community. I am also so very thankful for each and every person who participated in one way or another in the program, both within the school community and outside.

From the Principal

Mr Brett Hartley

Our school newsletter seeks to share positive news, celebrate successes, express appreciation and keep members of our school community well-informed about upcoming events. However, on a very limited number of occasions I need to, somewhat reluctantly, write more politically so as to defend and advocate for our distinctively Christian model of education. Three key features of Christian education at our school are:

  • directly teaching the Bible in Christian studies lessons and devotions
  • integrating a Christian perspective into a range of subjects being studied
  • employing Christian teachers

As you are probably aware, the federal government is intending to pass legislation within the next few weeks to prevent schools from discriminating on the basis of sexual preference or gender identity.

Morning drop off – safety tips from Mr Hartley

While I appreciate that the large majority of parents who drop off their children in the mornings follow the tips below, I thought that the following safety tips would be helpful.

Drop off as quickly as possible - Drop children off as quickly as possible without jeopardising their safety or the safety of others.

Wait and move forward - If the car in front of you is about to pull out, please don’t allow your children to get out of the car. Wait until the car(s) in front pull out and then move forward in the turning circle before your children get out of the car.

Navigate around other cars with caution - If the car in front of you has just arrived and the driver has just exited the car to assist children, please only go around that car if there is a substantial gap for you to pull into further around the turning circle. Be careful as you navigate around other cars as they may pull out.

Parent Parking

Some neighbours have recently written to the school to complain that parents are parking too close to the driveways of neighbouring properties. Please remember that we need to be considerate of our neighbours and ensure that where we park our cars does not inconvenience our neighbours or create safety hazards.

SocS Puppet Show visits the circus

At the end of Term 3, the K-2 students were treated to another SocS Puppet Show. The circus theme was a perfect platform to discuss the issue of anxiety. Anxious Arnold was too anxious to perform in his Uncle’s circus and so spread the rumour that the butterflies you feel in your tummy are actually caused by a Butterfly Flu!

CSSA State Biathlon/Triathlon

On Thursday, 25 October, 17 Shire Christian students (13 secondary, 4 primary) competed at the highly competitive CSSA State Biathlon/Triathlon at Penrith International Regatta Centre. This is an excellent event on the calendar which gives students an opportunity to compete at the Sydney Olympic venue at a sport that is quite unfamiliar to many. Our students were amazing competitors and all competed admirably in each of the swim, bike and run legs of the race. A special mention must go out to Patrick Murray who came second in the open boys individual division. Well done to all students involved in a great day.

Hiding God’s Word in our hearts

Rev Bruce Christian

For the last 3 weeks at our Church we have been working through the Bible League’s program of “Bibles for the Persecuted”. It has been very challenging reading accounts of what it is costing so many of our brothers and sisters in Christ to remain true to their faith in countries where there is such active opposition to the Gospel and such persistent persecution of Christian believers. Some of this persecution is at an official ‘State’ level, but, sadly, much of it comes from within families, from ‘loved ones’! I am reminded of Jesus’ warning to his disciples: “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law - a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:34-38).

For prayer and praise

Rejoice in the Lord always, I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. Philippians 4:4-6

  • Praise God that he is so good and worthy to be praised!
  • Thank God that He hears our prayers and pray for those who struggle with anxiety.
  • Pray for the HSC students as they sit their exams.
  • Give thanks for the Years 4&5 camp and pray that the students’ friendships will continue to grow and that they will have a positive influence on each other.
  • Pray for the Orientation mornings over the next few weeks, and for the new students and families joining our school community.
  • Pray for godly wisdom for Mr Hartley, Mr Stonestreet, Mr Smith, Mr Carter and Mr Watters as they lead our school.
