The attempt by Australian and New Zealand troops to capture Gallipoli in Turkey during World War I resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, including the deaths of over 8000 Australian soldiers. After 8 gruelling months, the Allied forces were evacuated at the end of 1915.

The Anzacs did not win this battle. Historians may argue that this military operation was an ill-conceived disaster. Some societies would never highlight, or even recognise, any type of perceived failure, let alone a military one. By the end of World War I Australia and New Zealand took a different view. The Australian Army website notes that 

….. the landing on Gallipoli and the events that followed had a profound impact on those at home. The 25^th of April soon became the day on which Australians remember the sacrifice of those who had died in the war.

Over time in our country, Anzac Day evolved into a day of remembrance of all Australians killed in military operations. It should compel Australians to pause their pursuit of pleasure and individual achievement for just a few hours. The culture of Anzac Day should foster a deep sense of gratitude for those who died in war.

The sacrifice of our soldiers in military operations has helped to ensure that Australia continues to be a modern democracy where individual liberty, freedom of thought and expression, justice and equality of opportunity are prized. Anzac Day should motivate Australians to cherish these values.

Freedom of thought and expression is important to Christians. God calls us to meet to hear the Bible proclaimed and spur each other on to love and good deeds. Since the time God became flesh and dwelt among us Christians have been persecuted for declaring that Jesus is the only way that men and women are saved on judgment day.

Students in Christian schools should be inspired by the self-sacrificial mateship of our defence force personnel, both past and present. As Australian students rightly seek to learn and achieve academically, Anzac Day should motivate them to stop and think if their head, heart and hands are motivated to stand up for what is just, recognising that God is a God of justice.

The past and present sacrifices of our defence forces should help inspire our students to be other person centered, recognising that Philippians 2:3 teaches:

do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.

As our school community reflects on, and is inspired by, the sacrifices of our troops this Anzac Day we should remember to look to Jesus the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

The new service departs at 7.30am starting on Monday 3 May. While this was not the school’s preferred time, I am very thankful that we have been given an extra public bus.

For us to be able to distribute students reasonably evenly across the buses to prevent overcrowding, reduce the risk of full buses driving past students waiting on the route between Sutherland and the school and to help ensure that students in Years 7 to 12 arrive at school on time I propose the following:

I appreciate that this approach may not be workable for a small number of families and their children may need to catch a different bus to what is mentioned above. However, for the rest of this term I ask that the large majority of our families follow the above guidelines from next Monday. Towards the end of Term 2 the school will send parents a survey to see if these arrangements are working or if adjustments need to be made.

Firstly, congratulations to all students for their outstanding participation in the Cross Country Carnival last week. I love this event and seeing everyone give their best and encourage each other to pass the finish line. It was so good to see so many parents and grandparents spectate and help. Thank you to Mrs Whitaker for organising this awesome event and the teachers who helped train and encourage the children.

Students are challenged at camp. They are often pushed beyond their comfort zone to do something that they otherwise normally wouldn’t do. Year 9 this year went to the Youthworks’ site Rathane in the Royal National Park and they were challenged by a hike and camp out in the outdoors. At Bluegum in Springwood, Year 7 were challenged to rely upon others as many of them abseiled and rock climbed for the first time. Year 11 students were challenged by the freezing conditions as they hiked Mt. Kosciusko and saw their hair turn to icicles. Year 8 were challenged as they set sail on the Port Hacking steering their boats to glory. At Crusaders’ site in Galston Gorge, Year 10 climbed the tower of terror in groups and were confronted with all sorts of challenges. Challenge is a necessary part of growth and is a central part to our camping program across the years.

Building a sense of community is equally important in my eyes. Whilst at camp, students are immersed in this incredible environment where relationships with both peers and teachers are formed and strengthened beyond the normal classroom setting. Creating a community where everyone is valued and appreciated regardless of their differences and where the needs of others are considered first and foremost is a central aspect. As a school we strive to encourage our students to be quick to listen and slow to speak and slow to become angry (James 1:19) and to build each other up through their talk (Ephesians 4:29).

Finally, and most importantly, camps are an opportunity for students to connect with God. As pastoral care teachers, we would love nothing more than for your children to investigate the claims of Jesus and know for themselves the great gift that Jesus brings to all humanity on the cross through his death and resurrection. We prioritise time each day on every camp to open God’s Word and hear it explained from a local church worker before unpacking it in small groups. It is an absolute privilege to share in these conversations with students at camp and share our love for Christ with them.

I want to thank the tireless work of the year coordinators in organising the various camps and each and every staff member who attended. They give up time away from their families and regular commitments to come to camp and invest in the students’ lives; so thank you!

Debating this year was a lot different from last year. Not only are the actual debates on Zoom, but I am super proud of my team for winning a couple of debates. From the original debating workshop in early Term One, to the debate that Shire B did this Thursday, I have enjoyed every minute of it and it has been a great experience to work with other people in my grade for something that I enjoy. Even though not every debate can be won, we still have lots of fun and enjoy planning out our debates during the week and then actually debating on the day.

Her family shared a verse from 1 Thessalonians that is reassuring at this time: 

Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

While we take some comfort in knowing she isn’t in pain any longer we are so sad that she is no longer with us. Being made by God to be in relationship with him, and also each other, we feel keenly the immediate separation that death brings when we lose someone we love. I know she will be sorely missed in a school community that she loved being a part of.

Prayer would be appreciated for her husband Jason and their kids Ivy, Amy and Leo as they suffer the loss of Bron in their lives.

May we praise God that death is not the end. As we’ve just been reminded over Easter, Jesus has won the victory over death and we will be together again.

After a year of not attending theatre, we sat in the newly refurbished Wharf 1 as Sydney Theatre Company painted a picture of The Rocks in Sydney as it was in 1873 as well as how we see it today.

We followed the story of Abigail, a girl dealing with her parents’ separation, who is drawn back in time by Beatie Bow. We were treated to a performance with inspiring designs in set, costume, lighting and sound. The audience was immersed in many moments as the company manipulated the elements to created different atmospheres: sometimes eerie, sometimes celebratory and sometimes heartbreaking. It was excited to see the creative ways these elements were used and how they shifted and flowed in seamless rhythms using carefully chosen minimal set elements controlled by the company.

The play explores the connections we have to one another through time and space as well as the important connections we have to our family and ancestors, and how the separation of these connections can be painful. It is also a coming of age story, focusing on Abigail and Beatie Bow as they figure out what it means to grow into a young woman and how they fit within their society.

It was exciting to be viewing this play in the very place where it was set, The Rocks. The students have been discussing in class how the company created this theatre and will consider this as an example as they look at design and performance themselves.

What better way to be reacquainted with the theatre than to be able to appreciate such a wonderful representation of a much loved Australian work.

A special congratulations goes to those who have been training hard in preparation for the day, and to those who made it through to the South Met Zone Cross Country, which will be held at Camden Equestrian Park on Monday, May 3 2021. This race is particularly challenging as it is a distance of 3km for 11 to 12 year olds, and 2km for 10 and under. These students will be competing for a spot in the State Cross Country Carnival on Friday May 28 at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre.

Thank you to the many parents who volunteered to help in various ways. The day could not have run so smoothly without your valued assistance.

It expresses the same kind of confidence as the Hebrew word translated ‘wait’ in Psalm 130:6 - “My soul waits for the Lord more than watchmen wait for the morning, more than watchmen wait for the morning.” The anxious, lonely ’watchman’ on night guard duty has no doubt that the morning WILL come. He KNOWS that the Sovereign Creator runs his Universe regularly in accordance with reliable ‘laws’ of physics, so he knows exactly how long it will be before he can EXPECT the morning to come! This is why the Psalmist can go on to say in verse 7: “O Israel, put your HOPE in the LORD, for with the LORD is unfailing love and with him is full redemption.” There is nothing WISHy-washy about this HOPE.

It is from this perspective that the Apostle Paul can write to ‘young’ Christians who are struggling a bit with the difficult circumstances in which they find themselves: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the [Holy Spirit-inspired] Scriptures we might have HOPE.” (Romans 15:4), and a bit later: “May the God of HOPE fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with HOPE by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13).

This is certainly what our young people (and us ‘oldies’) need to KNOW, and take hold of, more than anything, in these seemingly ‘uncertain’ days. As the Apostle had written earlier in his letter to the Christians in Rome: “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us. The creation waits in EAGER EXPECTATION [NOT ‘maybe, maybe not’ - ‘fingers crossed’] for the sons of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in HOPE that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the glorious freedom of the children of God [which we KNOW will happen]. We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time. Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we WAIT EAGERLY for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this HOPE we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what he already has? But if we HOPE for what we do not yet have, we WAIT FOR IT PATIENTLY.” (Romans 8:18-25).

May we all, as parents, teachers, grandparents, and friends involved in our School Community, daily exhibit what Paul prayed for for the Church in Rome: “May the God of HOPE fill you with all JOY and PEACE as you TRUST in him, so that you may overflow with HOPE by the power of the Holy Spirit.”  It is this ‘joy’, ‘peace’ and ‘trust’ which ‘overflows’ as  ‘HOPE’, that will encourage those entrusted to our care to remain HOPE-ful through all these challenging times.

UTS Law First Year Peer Mentoring Program

Run in conjunction with the UTS Law Students' Society, this program is tailored to ease your transition into UTS Law. It provides a great medium for you to connect with your peers and senior law students, as well as an opportunity to develop your legal study skills.

Each mentor group is led by senior year UTS Law students who volunteer their time to share their experiences and offer helpful advice to new students settling into the study of law. All mentors receive training provided by the Faculty of Law. Mentors work in pairs and run hour-long sessions over the first six weeks of each session.

This program is available to all first year undergraduate and Juris Doctor students, including part-time and international students.

No Testing Required for 2021-22 US University Admissions

This is great news for year 12 students who may not have left enough time to sit or re-sit the SAT or ACT and who are interested in studying in the US!

US university application requirements for current year 12 students changed due to the pandemic. For the second consecutive year, most US universities will not require students to submit an SAT or ACT test result as part of the application process. Although there are a few institutions for which this does not apply, this is a giant step in the world of admissions.

Universities are still able to gain a solid understanding of an applicant without the test scores due to the holistic admission process. University admission teams will put further emphasis on the other required components of the application such as an applicant’s courses and earned marks (transcripts) dating back to year nine. Admission teams may also review the letters of recommendation through a new lens, as they strive to learn more about the applicant as an individual. As in the past, the personal statement will continue to be the sole place an applicant can determine what they want to convey to the admission team. For this reason, perhaps more significant time and reflection is required in crafting the personal statement.

College Board eliminates SAT Subject Tests and optional SAT essay

The College Board has announced they will eliminate the SAT Subject Tests and the SAT optional written essay. This means these two components will no longer be recommended nor required from individual US universities when applying for admission. 

This is great news as it frees up time and is one less requirement students needed in the holistic admission process to US universities. Due to the pandemic many US universities have moved to test-optional meaning the SAT or ACT test results are not required in applying for admission. 

The last of the Subject Tests will be offered in May and June 2021 at international testing centres only. Students who have already registered for the Subject Tests in May and June may either sit the tests as scheduled or contact the College Boardto cancel the registration and receive a refund. Each US university will have their own updated testing policy regarding how they will review submitted Subject Tests in reviewing applications for admission. I advise consulting directly with the university in which you intend on applying to best understand their policy.

The optional SAT essay will continue to be offered for the March 2021 and May 2021 international testing dates. After this, the optional essay will be eliminated.

The University of Sydney Sleek Geeks Science Eureka Prize is offered to primary and high school students nationally. If you have a passion for science and for communicating ideas, then enter this competition by telling a scientific story via a short video piece. We’re looking for the next generation of amazing science communicators, such as  Dr Karl and Adam Spencer.
