The show was initially cast in 2019 but was put on hold as health restrictions were introduced.

Director and producer Kathryn Breen said it had been a long journey with Joseph but was grateful to God that the musical could finally be shared with the school community. 

“There were times when it was a challenge for me to keep going and I also wondered if it was the same for the students. But each week they came to rehearsal, whether it was in person in the hall, spaced out across the playground or on Zoom - they were there. During this protracted process these students have reflected many of the same qualities that we see in Joseph. I am incredibly humbled by the example of tenacity and perseverance that they have shown us all,” Mrs Breen said.

“One of the hardest things last year for so many was the feeling of isolation that rippled across the globe. In the show we see Joseph experience a similar feeling of being alone. As he languishes in gaol for a crime he didn’t commit, Joseph earnestly sings ‘Children of Israel are never alone’. He is comforted by the knowledge that God is with him,” said Mrs Breen. 

Principal Brett Hartley said he was very proud of the efforts of everyone involved. 

“Musicals are a fabulous opportunity for students to express their creative talents and to provide enjoyment for others. I’m thrilled that we are finally able to put this musical on for our community, with a large cast of over 80 students from across our Junior and Secondary School,” said Mr Hartley.

The production is accompanied by a live orchestra and features a student who graduated from Shire Christian School in 2020. Amy Crean has returned to play the role of Potiphar’s wife.

With all three evening performances sold out the school was pleased to be able to offer a livestream option for the Friday evening performance.

“Not only are we able to provide for people who have missed out on tickets and for those who find it difficult to make it to an evening performance, we are also excited to give students experience operating cameras under the instruction of a professional broadcast director,” said Head of Communications Geoff Miller.

The executive team assesses HSC results each year and then works with Secondary Heads of Department to identify how teachers can improve their practice to help students maximise their results. This includes a careful analysis of how students perform in each section of an exam over time. For example, let’s assume that a particular subject outperformed the state in the short answer section of the exam for 3 years in a row, but was below the state average in the 4^th year. The heads of department would assess why the marks dropped in the 4^th year and determine whether teaching practice contributed to the marked decline. If so, they would develop specific strategies to lift marks in the short answer section in the future.

This detailed approach to analysing HSC results has borne fruit in recent years, with some Year 12 cohorts performing particularly well in comparison to the state, and in comparison to neighbouring schools. For example, only a few years ago our HSC results saw us ranked as the highest performing coeducational, non-selective school in the Sutherland Shire and St George district by the Sydney Morning Herald.

Thinking strategically

While it is right that the school is proud of our academic achievements, we should not rest on our laurels. The board and the executive have been thinking strategically about how to take the school forward in the future. We are currently working on what we term strategic pillars and some specific goals for each pillar.

Learning culture

One of our strategic pillars is learning culture. Children learn best when they feel safe and supported. While the school is rightly proud of our pastoral care, it is important that we continue to use our caring, Christian environment as a platform to build on to help students to learn and achieve.

To help the school develop a deep and rich culture of learning I have asked Mrs Jann Robinson to work with our executive team during the school holidays. Jann is the former principal of St Luke’s Grammar School in Dee Why where her efforts to improve learning culture saw St Luke’s HSC results improve significantly.

Sabbatical

The Shire Christian School board has generously given me 4 weeks of sabbatical leave from the beginning of next term. I will be using this time to think strategically and read widely on the topic of learning culture. In my absence Mr Carter will be Acting Principal in Week 1 of Term 3. Mr Bluhdorn will be the Acting Head of Junior School for that week. In Weeks 2-4 Mr Stonestreet will be the Acting Principal.

Our Musical

Our school musical for 2021 proved to be an outstanding success. Tickets for the performances sold out. The students performed brilliantly, which demonstrated their great talents and hard work. Many thanks to the teachers and parents who invested so many hours to deliver such an entertaining production.

Because of this approach, our Junior School semester reports appear different to what is traditionally reported with seemingly less comments due to the reporting that has already taken place. For example, if the teacher has already progressively reported on a Science assessment, then this comment will not appear on the semester report, just the effort and the overall grade. This year we will be giving students from Years 3-6 the opportunity to participate in ICAS Assessments in English and Mathematics. They cost $17.05 each assessment and are conducted at school using the student’s Chromebook in Term 3. Year 11 delved into issues surrounding the age of criminal responsibility and the law in regards to the use of technology. Year 12 focussed on the role and challenges of police in the criminal investigation process.

The Kids Lit Quiz tests the students’ knowledge of children’s literature in a similar format to a trivia competition. Our heat was a virtual heat, competing against schools from across NSW. 

Each team that competed won a round, and we also took third and fourth place on the day.

"It was a tough competition with hard and complicated questions, but the teams performed amazingly!", said Naveera (Year 8 student).

The people who took us around the place were really friendly and showed us how Annandale had been transformed over time to become a more liveable place. It was particularly interesting to see how a tram station had been transformed into a shopping centre and how the government had provided affordable housing for essential workers such as nurses to ensure that essential workers lived in the area. The follow-up task of redesigning White Bay Power Station was an interesting but challenging task as we had to remake the area into a liveable space whilst still maintaining heritage buildings. It was a lot of fun to do some learning outside the classroom again.

We learnt about some of the most gruesome murders of the 20th Century and how the police fulfilled or failed their duty to uphold the law, including the role of forensics in proving guilt. 

In our mock trial a poor mechanic was found guilty of smoking marajuana, a most serious crime. We learnt how the prosecution and defence would argue the case that provided justice for all. 

The second part of our excursion took us to the NSW Parliament House where after a brief tour, we assumed the roles of our NSW politicians. In our mock parliamentary debate, NSW Premier Bethany Hanna faced off against disgraced opposition leader Damon Beaton. The question was whether to raise the legal drinking age to 21 which had the Member for Dubbo Charlotte Lang up in arms with the Member for Granville Jeremiah Ashton, leaving it to House Speaker Hannah Ibbotson to restore order.

A good day was had by all, with the final verdict condemning the most trouble making among us to the docks.

There were wins, draws and losses for most of our teams but one thing that was evident to all was how hard the students played and the terrific sportsmanship displayed by all.

Here are some reflections of the day by the teachers who selected, trained and encouraged the teams:

Mrs Raquel Watters, Junior Netball - “Overall, the teams played extremely well for girls who are only learning the rules of the game. I am so proud of their efforts and sportsmanship displayed throughout the day”.

Mrs Leanne Bentley, Senior Netball - “The two senior teams’ greatest strength of the day was their teamwork. Every player contributed to the success of their team. Both teams cheered the other team on when they could and celebrated each other’s success. Our senior A team was undefeated. The senior B team had three wins and two draws." 

Mr Tim Bluhdorn, Junior Football - “Our Junior teams were excited and ready for a massive day of soccer. Before beginning our day we spoke about our three key words - Teamwork, Sportsmanship and Skill and both our teams showed these values in abundance.

Our A team played 5 games, coming away with 4 wins and a very close loss. There were so many highlights during the competition including amazing goals and some outstanding defence. At the completion of the round robin games, we ended up in 2nd place based on goal difference. This put the team into the final against a strong Inaburra team. The back and forth play was thrilling, with many close shots and last minute defence. The final score was 0-0 which sent the game into golden goal extra time. Unfortunately Inaburra came up with a goal and we ended up in 2nd place overall. The team has qualified for the State Gala Day in Term 3. Well done to all the players and thanks to the parents for their support on the day. The team: Jacob Hulskamp, Jacob Fox, Luke Zabaras, Cuba Ayoub, Angeline Brough, Mitchell Beverley, Jackson Collins, Flynn Hughes, Ryan Whittaker, Max Laycock.              

Our B team played a grand total of 7 games on the gala day. Ably led by the fantastic Mrs Krstanoski and Mrs Wiseman, the team won 4 games, drew 2 and lost 1. They rotated positions, all having a turn in goals and sharing the positions on the field showing amazing teamwork and skill. The team: Hayden Todd, Samuel Bluhdorn, Coby Wiseman, Alice Krstanoski, Jemima Bailey, Finn Bailey, Oscar Dietrich, Jared Bennison, Leo Schmeid, Elijah Hazlewood.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                        

Miss Mahlia Ohlmus, Senior Football - “The high level of competition in the Senior A division was as expected - quite impressive. Our Shire team played six very different games, where the boys came away with two wins, three losses and a draw. A mentionable final game against Regents Park saw four goals scored in quick succession (from our very own Levi Breen, Hamish Wadds and Cooper Starr), where the team pulled-off a very convincing win to end the day. Sportsmanship was on display throughout the day and I am so proud of what the team achieved despite a limited period of training.”

Mr Scott Kennedy, Senior Football - “The Senior B team played amazingly well. From six very tough games we came away with three wins, two draws and only one loss. Our forwards did a fantastic job, putting pressure on the opposition defense and goalie, coming away with goals in all but 1 game. The backs were excellent in keeping the ball safely out of our own end and our goalies made some crucial saves that were worth a point in their own right. Most importantly our team played with sportsmanship and compassion, being the first to help up an opponent who had fallen and showing humility in victory and graciousness in defeat.”

The girls competed in 4 different disciplines in Division 1, Level 3. Despite a few challenges, including a last minute change of music for Mia, the brave girls finished the day with smiles on their faces, congratulating the other competitors like the true champions they are!

A special congratulations to Izabella who had a particularly great day, scoring a convincing first place in her division! Well done!

When the LORD instructed Jeremiah to write to God’s Chosen Covenant People who had been captured and taken as exiles to Babylon, he gave him these words: “This is what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: ‘Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” (Jeremiah 29:4-7).

As I reflected on the significance of this, some other portions of Scripture came to mind. When God ‘exiled’ Abraham to an unknown, ‘foreign’ country, away from all the comforts of family and home, he sent him off with a firm promise: “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and YOU WILL BE A BLESSING.” (Genesis 12:2). When the Apostle Paul was giving instruction to the believers in Rome, who were in a situation similar to ours, he wrote: “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” (Romans 12:14). He was, of course, just reflecting what Jesus had said to his disciples, knowing what lay ahead for them: “But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44), and “bless those who curse you, pray for those who ill-treat you.” (Luke 6:28).

So, this ‘grumpy old man’ has to learn afresh that the way things are is actually ‘par for the course’, and I am put here in it, not to be disillusioned, discontented and grumpy, but to be a source of BLESSING to EVERYONE the Sovereign Lord puts in my path for that very purpose - which is why the Lord blesses me so faithfully and continuously!

No Testing Required for 2021-22 US University Admissions

This is great news for year 12 students who may not have left enough time to sit or re-sit the SAT or ACT and who are interested in studying in the US!

US university application requirements for current year 12 students changed due to the pandemic. For the second consecutive year, most US universities will not require students to submit an SAT or ACT test result as part of the application process. Although there are a few institutions for which this does not apply, this is a giant step in the world of admissions.

Universities are still able to gain a solid understanding of an applicant without the test scores due to the holistic admission process. University admission teams will put further emphasis on the other required components of the application such as an applicant’s courses and earned marks (transcripts) dating back to year nine. Admission teams may also review the letters of recommendation through a new lens, as they strive to learn more about the applicant as an individual. As in the past, the personal statement will continue to be the sole place an applicant can determine what they want to convey to the admission team. For this reason, perhaps more significant time and reflection is required in crafting the personal statement.

It’s true that your ATAR rank can be a useful factor of your chances for success in a specific course. But it’s equally true that there are other factors we can use to assess your suitability. That’s why we have 11 different admission pathways to Macquarie; ten of these assess your suitability on more than a selection ranking based on your raw ATAR or on your ATAR plus adjustment factors providing additional points.

Also every year, we publish guaranteed entry selection ranks for each of our courses. If your selection rank (your ATAR plus relevant adjustment factors) is the same or above what is published for the course you wish to study, then you’ll receive an offer to study at Macquarie – as long as you have listed this course as your highest eligible preference.

Make sure you review the application questions and start drafting your responses.

Remember the Co-op Program is looking for what makes you stand out from the crowd. Include enough detail in your answers to showcase who you are, what experience you have and why we should choose you. A list of achievements is a good start, but an explanation about how these achievements have helped you grow as an individual is much better!

UCAT Summary and Preparation

The University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT ANZ) is an admissions test used by the UCAT ANZ Consortium of universities in Australia and New Zealand for their medical, dental and clinical science degree programmes.

The UCAT ANZ helps universities to select applicants with the most appropriate abilities and professional behaviours required for new doctors and dentists to be successful in their clinical careers. It is used in collaboration with other admissions processes such as interviews and academic qualifications.

It is also your opportunity to stand out from other applicants and demonstrate your aptitude for a demanding programme of study.

The UCAT ANZ is a computer-based test delivered in Pearson VUE test centres throughout Australia, New Zealand and at some overseas locations.

Please note that some pathways to medicine / dentistry / clinical sciences will not require the UCAT ANZ. For some applicants a different test may be required. For details candidates should refer to the websites of the universities to which they intend to apply.

UCAT Test Day

You must arrive at least 30 minutes before your appointment time to complete the check-in process. 
If you arrive more than 15 minutes after your appointment time you will not be allowed to take the test and will have to book and pay for a new test appointment on another day, (subject to availability of test appointments). This applies in cases of family emergency, accident, transport problems and security alert as well as forgetfulness and lateness.

UCAT Test Format

The UCAT is a two-hour computer-based test which assesses a range of abilities identified by universities as important to practicing in the fields of medicine / dentistry / clinical sciences.  The test consists of five separately timed subtests which each contain a number of questions in a multiple-choice format.  Once started the test cannot be paused for a break but before each subtest there is a timed instruction section.  

Candidates either sit the standard test or apply for an extended version of the test if they are entitled to extra time due to a documented medical condition or disability.

Physical Aptitude Test - FireFit Training Guide from NSW Fire and Rescue

As firefighters, we put life first and we train to get it right.

Firefighting is a physically demanding occupation. Tasks include carrying heavy loads including personal protective equipment, handling temperature extremes, variable terrains and confined spaces, all of which impose unique physical and physiological demands upon firefighters.

The FireFit Training Guide is based on an eight to 12-week program, depending on each individual’s fitness level, and is available to help eligible candidates prepare for the Fire and Rescue NSW Physical Aptitude Test (PAT)*.

We have created a series of exercise focused videos called “Train Like a Firefighter” that will show you how each exercise relates to the physical demands required of firefighters.
