Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat proved to be a wonderful success and deservedly received high praise from audience members young and old. I heard wonderful feedback from a 6 year old girl through to a great-grandfather and everyone in between. Productions touch and move people in different ways. As a principal, it warms my heart to see children expressing themselves for the enjoyment of others. The meaningful interactions between teachers and students at both the practices and the performances reassured me that our teachers are fully invested into providing the best education they can for our students – not just for school musicals, but in all areas of school life.

Classroom learning has been an important mix of energy and self-discipline. I have enjoyed dropping into some classes where students are busily interacting with each other to produce a particular project. However, I have equally appreciated visiting classes where the best way to learn is to listen to a clear, understandable explanations from a teacher and then complete a quiet, individual learning task.

Our theme for the year has been Christian education and pastoral care. Mrs Cooper, who teaches kindergarten, has shared some of her wonderful initiatives:

We read a book called “My class is my family". We often come back to discussions about how we are part of the KC family who love, care and look out for each other’s needs. We are part of our school family and God’s wider family of believers. Students are seeking to care for their own learning needs and extend this to our whole class - learning how they fit into our family. This extends to their everyday needs of kindness and friendship. The class are very responsive to this.

We start everyday with devotions, prayer and singing. We have prayer picture cards which help the students learn to learn how to thank God, pray for others and pray for ways we can grow to be more like Jesus. Over the past semester, I’ve been encouraged to hear the kindergarten students begin to pray for students who are away for the day, or the needs of others without prompting. They also share the needs of their family and we can pray for loved ones and follow up on their families.

A few teachers in infants use a system called “Have you filled a bucket?” and have spent time teaching their children how to look out and celebrate the strengths of others. Recognising the need for us all to have our 'buckets filled’  they learnt practical ways to encourage and build each other up. 

As I shared a few weeks ago, Christian schools should be praying communities. Over the holidays, please pray for our school. There are many more prayer points than I could possibly list; however, I have shared a few below:

• Thank God that the government continues to help fund Christian schools.
• For Year 12 as they study intensively for their trial exams next term.
• For the school’s building committee as they consider improvements to our facilities.
• A time of rest for students, parents and staff over the winter break.

Thanks to the generosity of our school community, we were able to raise over $2000. Students from across the school came dressed in CRAZY socks and gave generously towards the valuable gospel work.

Please continue to pray for this work here in Australia and that all may one day have access to a Bible translation in their own language and know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.

As we come to the end of the term and go into what is a well-deserved break for both staff and students, I want to wish you well. I hope that the holidays will give everyone an opportunity to relax, have fun with family and friends and enjoy exploring God's creation. My prayers and thoughts will particularly be with Year 12 as they prepare for their HSC Trial Examinations which start on the first Tuesday back next term. Above all, I pray that you will be reminded of the greatest gift of all over the break; that is the grace extended to us in Christ.

As well as our normal Bronze, Silver and Gold awards, we were able to award our Athletics Age Champions (photos of award winners will be sent to parents next week) and hear from our Robocup teams who achieved outstandingly at the NSW Lego Spike Prime Competition. These teams worked closely with Mrs Leonie Hampson to design, build, code, create a video and also complete an in-depth folio of their Robocup vehicle. With over 80 entries across NSW, 6 teams were presented were chosen as ‘Highly Commended' and 2 of those teams were from Shire Christian School. What an achievement. We also had the privilege of watching two dances from the Aurora dance group. This dance program runs during school lunchtime with Lauren Kerr and Megan Street and it was lovely to see the dancers beaming and dancing so beautifully. Well done!

P-2 Athletics Carnival coming up next Term in Week 3. We look forward to incorporating an Olympic theme this year to highlight the 2021 Olympic Games. Further details for this will come closer to the date.

PIPE

An email has been sent to parents regarding the upcoming Primary & Infants Performance Evening (PIPE) in Week 5 of Term 3. The email outlines the audition process for students including a link where audition videos can be uploaded. We look forward to celebrating the different gifts and abilities we have been given from the Lord. Year 10 headed far and wide last week, exploring the workplace, making the commute, planning, packing, designing, meeting and playing their part in a wide range of occupations as part of our annual Work Experience Programme.

Q. What occupations were included in this year’s work experience?

A. Well, since you asked…Costume designers, motor technicians, lawyers, occupational therapy, physiotherapists, warehousing and logistics, primary and high school teaching, landscaping, fitness instruction, horticulturalist, architecture, barber, civil construction, plumbing, electrical, real estate, politics, baking, entrepreneurship, dancing, events…and more! Phew!

Q. What does a successful work experience look like?

A. Yay! Ohhh…. Meh! Maybe…Um…What if…?

For some of our students, last week will have helped them to successfully strike a career OFF their list (“Meh!”) Some still aren’t any closer to deciding on a career but have learnt valuable lessons about life in the workplace (“Ohhhh.”) Others have started out on a journey towards a particular career and started thinking about subject selections, school-leaving, traineeships and study options. (“Maybe…Um…What if…?”)

By using their work experience journal and competing a career interview with their employer our students have been given an opportunity to record what they did and reflect on what they did and didn’t enjoy about work experience.

After last week, one of our students has already been offered an apprenticeship and number of others have secured part time or holiday work.

This day consisted of two experienced Business Studies teachers presenting on how to write business reports and extended responses. The students also learnt some interesting facts and figures about McDonalds, which they can now use as a major case study in their examinations. Year 12 also had the opportunity to have lunch at Hurstville Westfield, with most students choosing McDonalds for lunch.

Students were given some excellent tips on course content, how to use the syllabus well, study techniques and examination preparation. The students also walked away from the day with a booklet containing pages of great information on Business Studies.

Overall, the lectures were a fantastic opportunity to learn more about writing and case studies and should greatly assist our Year 12 Business Studies student’s preparation for their Trial HSC and HSC Examinations.

They spotted, buses, cars, many types of trucks, golf buggies model aeroplanes and lots more. The highlight for many was standing on the pedestrian bridge between Sutherland and Jannali and watching the trains. How exciting when the driver blew the horn. We finished our excursion with a picnic lunch and bike riding at Parc Menai.

The first place that Year 12 visited was the RBA. Students were given a mini lecture on the history of Australian currency and were briefed on some of the technology that goes into making contemporary Australian bank notes. Year 11 Economics also heard from two economists on careers in Economics and about the current state of the Australian economy.

After time at the RBA, the students went across to NSW Parliament House to hear from the NSW Treasurer, Dominic Perrottet. It was a great privilege for the students to hear from Mr. Perrottet about managing the NSW economy, particularly through the current pandemic. Year 11 Economics were then able to ask Mr. Perrottet questions about the NSW economy.

The class had a great day together learning about the economic world. They took away fantastic experiences that they can now apply to their learning at school.

Our Under 15’s team placed second in their pool after some very convincing wins. They qualified for the quarter finals and fought hard, but were beaten by Pacific Hills Christian School, who ended up going on to win the age group.

Our Open’s team also placed second in their pool and progressed to the quarter final, where they beat William Carey Christian School in a nail biting one goal victory. They then progressed to the semi final against Oxford Falls Grammar, but were beaten despite showing great skill and determination against some fierce competition. Well done, girls!

I couldn’t help thinking about the message of Psalm 126, written to celebrate the return from captivity in Babylon. The psalmist knew that the gracious physical restoration of God’s people to their Promised Land, and to Zion, his ‘Dwelling Place’, was only part of the story. What if they all drifted back into their old wicked, disobedient ways that had led to their Exile in the first place! No, what was really needed was the outpouring of God’s Sovereign Grace on the efforts of the prophets as they declared the LORD’s truth and his ways into the people’s dry, barren hearts. “Restore our fortunes, O LORD, like streams in the Negev. Those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy. He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him.” (verses 4-6).

As a ‘dyed in the wool’ city-dweller, with only in-law connections with the rural community, I have only a second-hand appreciation of how difficult it must be for our farmers as they work so hard sowing ‘precious’ seed (cf KJV) and wondering whether there would be the right amount of rain at the right time to bring them a reward for all their efforts.

We are suffering a SPIRITUAL drought in our country today. Are we pleading earnestly and constantly with our loving Heavenly Father to “restore our fortunes … like streams in the [dry] Negev”  that “those who sow in tears will reap with songs of joy” and that “he who goes out weeping, carrying [precious] seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him”?

While, by God’s grace, we still have some opportunity as parents and teachers to ‘sow’ the ‘precious seed’ of the Gospel in the hearts of the next generation (hard as it is becoming with the increasing restrictions being imposed by our rapidly changing culture!), let us vow to undergird our efforts, both privately and in fellowship with ‘family’ (in the widest sense to include our spiritual community) with URGENT PRAYER.

PIPE stands for Primary & Infants Performance Evening which is made up of short music performances from Year 4, Ensembles, Shire Christian Dancers, as well as a number of auditioned items.

University of Sydney - Health Economics to support understanding microeconomics

Healthcare is a rich setting in which to study economics. While much of economics avoids discussing value judgements and focus on questions that have objective and verifiable answers, all polices are ultimately based on a value judgement. It is impossible to avoid discussing the values that lie behind the policy in health economics. In this talk, we will examine the key questions such as how we decide what is fair, while looking at some examples from the COVID-19 policy response.  This talk is suitable for Year 11-12 students.

The Year 12 subject scheme awards adjustment points towards your selection rank, based on your performance in select high school subjects that are relevant to your preferred UTS course. We’ve put together this scheme because we believe that your ability to undertake a course is better measured by looking at your subject marks in addition to your ATAR.  You're eligible to receive adjustment points as long as you are a recent school leaver who has:

These interviews are for applicants who are considering Bachelor of Accounting as a course preference after the close of on-time UAC applications.

In 2022 students in the Bachelor of Accounting program will receive a scholarship valued at:

ï $17,000 for the second year of the course; and

ï $9,000 for the first half of the third year of the course.

AFTRS Open Day 2021

8 August

On Saturday 8 August, we held our first-ever virtual Open Day, welcoming creatives from all over Australia and the world who joined us as we took a deep dive into the Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production. They got to know our lecturers, students and alumni, joined live chats and panel discussions, took a virtual campus tour, enjoyed work produced at the School, and got some tips on how to ace applications for the 2021 intake.

We also hosted drop-in sessions for those who missed our recent virtual Postgraduate Information Week, which covered all 10 disciplines offered in the Master of Arts Screen, the Master of Arts Screen: Business and Leadership and Graduate Diploma in Radio programs and can be viewed here.

AIE's Industry Experience Days are a great opportunity for students in Years 10, 11 and 12 to learn about the local and international game development, 3D animation and visual effects industries. Students will get the opportunity to learn about the different pathways to get into the industry, what should be in a portfolio and will be able to get creative in practical workshops using industry-standard 3D animation and game development tools.

The sessions are run by industry professionals who have worked on some blockbuster games and films. Everything is provided for you to participate in the hands-on workshops and you will be using the same software that is used in the industry.

If you are thinking about a career in the games or film industry then we highly recommend registering for this free event. We are limiting numbers for this event due to physical distancing requirements, with Year 12 students having priority to register.

Hard skills explained

Hard skills are: specific, quantifiable knowledge or abilities required for a job.

Increasingly, the most sought after hard skills will be in the areas of information and communications technology, machine learning algorithms, data science, drone piloting, information security, mechatronics, and remote equipment management."

Hard skills are sometimes referred to as the 'doing skills'. These skills are ones that you can learn through the more 'traditional' education techniques and tend to be career specific.

Soft skills explained

Soft skills are otherwise described as “human”, “social”, “emotional”, “interpersonal”, or “people” skills.

They include communication, collaboration, customer service, ethics, creativity, complex problem solving, critical thinking, digital literacy, adaptability/'learn-ability', cognitive flexibility, emotional intelligence, initiative, judgement, decision-making, negotiation and persuasion, people management and conflict management.

These are often considered 'human' skills, as they are about being human and interacting with other humans. They are the most in-demand skills because they are transferable between jobs and even industries.

Education vital for future farmers
