The revised HSC exam timetable will be released sometime in September. As soon as the school receives specific, official information about the exams, we will pass that information on to Year 12 students and parents. The government has said that Year 12 can have “full access” to on-site learning from 25/10. In coming weeks, I will be working with teachers to determine what this looks like so that Year 12 will be well prepared to sit their final exams.

Please be assured that the school will continue to provide the best possible learning experiences we can until our much-loved students return for face-to-face teaching. I realise that remote learning is difficult for parents and students. Juggling work commitments and managing student learning at home must be very demanding. My thoughts and prayers are with our families and our staff who continue to do all they can to educate and care for students.

During the week I had a very helpful Zoom meeting with several parents of Year 12 students to discuss a range of options for the Year 12 graduation and formal. Please pray that the school will be able to find positive and creative ways to host events that recognise Year 12 and demonstrate how much we have valued them being a part of our school. 

I am committed to providing as many worthwhile opportunities for students as I possibly can under these difficult circumstances. Please pray for staff who are responsible for providing these opportunities in a way that is COVID safe and legally compliant.

While I appreciate that many people are feeling the fatigue of long hours in front of a screen, I am thankful to God that we have technology that allows us to communicate face-to-face when we are forced to be apart. To help maintain a personal teacher/parent connection, I trust that the parent teacher event on Wednesday 8 September will be helpful.

Approaching the final 3 weeks of this term

Thank you once again for your ongoing support of your children and the school during this time. Remote Learning is not easy, it has been going for longer than expected and can cause tension and anxiety within families. We are all experiencing good days and bad days. 

One way to approach the remaining weeks of this term would be to reflect positively on the good things that have happened, the benefits of remote learning and what we can do to create good memories and experiences. What would you say have been some of the benefits and positives about this period of time?

There has been more opportunity for:

• family connection and for kids to do more of what they love with their family.
• children to learn new skills around the home.
• parents to be more involved in the day-to-day education of their child, to see how their child learns and know more about how and what they are taught.
• learning some of life’s important lessons.
• children to build resilience, kindness, patience and to be content.

Some parents may be concerned about their child falling behind at school work. Teachers are working hard to teach children remotely, to provide feedback and support them in their learning. Teachers are also very experienced at understanding the curriculum and each child’s needs. We will evaluate where each child is in their learning when we return to school and help them continue to make progress.

With the announcement from the NSW Government today about the return to school, please be assured that the school executive will work within the guidelines provided by the AIS and NESA, and liaise with staff and parents to ensure a safe return to school.

As our secondary students often work more independently, parents may not always see the lessons that their child engages in. I wanted to take this opportunity to share with our school community some of the creative approaches our staff have taken to ensure they are delivering quality lessons that provide depth and rigour. As staff prepare these lessons, they have also had to reflect on their teaching programs, adapting their activities so as not to over burden students with the pressures of remote learning. In this rapidly changing time, just like the students, we too are learning ways to continually do this well. Our teachers have truly done a remarkable job rising to this challenge, and I would like to share just some of the numerous examples.

Learning remotely has not hindered our Science team from conducting experiments. Some students have been using items from around the house such as playdoh and tennis balls to investigate the differences between elastic and inelastic collisions. Digital experiments at home have been able to be carried out by using ExploreLearning and their digital laboratory space. Even mandatory field work was not an impossibility, with our Year 11 students taking part in a virtual fieldtrip. Technology has also enabled the maths teachers to enrich their online teaching. Graphing software called Demos allows graphs to be manipulated by students. Similarly, Google Drawings allows graphs and diagrams to be produced in front of students. 

Our HSIE and English staff have approached online learning with a sense of positivity and have looked for ways to make the learning unique and accessible. Year 7 Medieval historians have had the opportunity to create their own coat of arms, comics or origami knight’s shields. In English, students have vicariously ‘trained’ to be Samurai along with the characters in their novel. This has involved students completing their training card with tasks such as calligraphy and acts of service. Robust discussions have been had by senior students, who engaged in a great debate regarding the villainous status of a Shakespearean protagonist. Zoom breakout rooms were used to stage the debate, complete with characters, a judge and jury.

Subjects that would normally rely on physical spaces and materials have been particularly challenged, however the creative heart of these subjects have enabled them to be reimagined in new ways. The four walls of a classroom have been transcended, with our Visual Art students literally taking their skills to the streets, with Street Art being used as a way to be creative whilst also spreading hope to their local communities. Drama performance spaces are no longer in our Tiered Learning Centre, but in the backyards and garages of student homes. Even auditions are being conducted via Zoom, with student directors meeting with their teacher in breakout rooms to discuss casting. Design concepts for plays are being shared and worked on collaboratively through Google Classroom. Our senior Textiles and Design students have also been challenged by looking for ways to bring their own design concepts to life. Students excelled as they had to design and construct corsets based on the theme ‘Back to the Future’ using materials available to them at home.

Ultimately, in this abnormal situation, we are striving to ensure a sense of consistency, purpose and quality. The teachers are working to maintain the integrity and rigour of their subjects in an environment that also calls for grace, flexibility and assurance. We are so proud of the efforts and work of our teachers, just as we are proud of the many ways that students have met the challenges of this time. We must also acknowledge the tireless work of our support and administration staff at this time - so much of our work and your child’s learning runs smoothly because of the proactive and diligent work of these valued members of our team.

While we are in this current lockdown their street art needed to be visible to their neighbours. During this term of online learning students in Year 8 have been examining Street Art with all of its various purposes, styles and expressive approaches. Many of the students shared that they really enjoyed this project as they were able to put their creative ideas into practice and that they could complete it outside in the sun. Here are some examples of students’ work and comments that were made.

Nathan: After my artwork was finished people would intentionally walk towards it and smile. The best moment was when an old lady and her grandson walked by and he asked the lady what I was doing, and the lady said I was just trying to make a difference in the community, giving hope even though COVID has taken lives. We then had a conversation about it.

Scarlett: I found the experience really enjoyable. It was nice being out in the sun. I’d love to do more chalk art in the future ! :)

Jamie: I did enjoy this because of all of the cool reactions.

Ezekiel: Everybody that passed my project either smiled or gave me a compliment, which was nice. I liked to see the smiles on their faces.

Cassandra: I saw amazed facial expressions as people walked passed and pointed it out. A little boy from next door also came over and said “Wow, that’s cool!”. This made me feel happy as people around my area appreciated the little message, and it caught them by surprise.

We are so proud of what you have produced, Year 8. You have made your Visual Arts teachers smile too! Well done!

Mr Neil Walker, Head of Christian Studies, said that the aim of the course, which is an alternative to one-unit Studies of Religion, was to equip committed Christian students for a life of faith and service.

Part of the course partners with Moore Theological College to incorporate some of the material of the Preliminary Theological Certificate (PTC Course). 

Those who apply to enrol will be required to meet with a Christian mentor from their local church at regular intervals, to update and discuss their spiritual journal.

Mr Nathan Asher, who will be co-teaching the subject with Mr Walker, said “This is a great course for those students who want to grow in their understanding as a Christian, develop knowledge of the Bible, and be prepared for a life of Christian ministry.”

“I’m looking forward to teaching and continuing to develop this course and seeing how God continues to grow the students that we have here at Shire Christian”, he said.

A key focus is to help students actively seek growth as disciples of Christ and intentionally pursue opportunities for service in the local church. A distinctive aspect of this course is the exploration of how individual Christian character, beliefs, habits and worldview are shaped as students grow, develop and mature in their family and communities. 

The subject is designed to grow students in their self-awareness, spiritual maturity, leadership capacity, vocational clarity, emotional maturity, personal integrity and relational skills.

Tim and Kathy Keller, in “The Songs of Jesus” (aka “My Rock, My Refuge”) comment: “We are to bow reverently, to kneel humbly before God, admitting our sinfulness and dependence. While adoration [as in the opening verses of the Psalm] comes from seeing a God of glory, submission comes from seeing a God of grace, one who is our covenant God, who redeemed us and brought us as sheep into his fold.” 

Yes, he is our ‘MAKER’, the one who designed us and made us in his own image and likeness (Genesis 1:26-27), and he is the LORD, the great ‘I AM’ (Exodus 3:14), the one who has established a COVENANT with us based on LOVE (‘chesed’ = ‘love/kindness/mercy/grace’) and FAITHFULNESS. He is also our SHEPHERD who gently and constantly cares for us - as Isaiah says, “He tends his flock like a shepherd: He gathers the lambs in his arms and carries them close to his heart; he gently leads those that have young. … Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.  He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no-one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.  Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” (Isaiah 40:11, 28-31). We have the advantage over the Psalmist (David?) and Isaiah of knowing that all of these Scriptures are fully and perfectly consummated in JESUS, our GOOD SHEPHERD.

Let us use this difficult time, as we all struggle with the impact of the pandemic and the restrictions, the masks, and the economic mess we’re in, to humble ourselves in prayer before our loving Saviour, and to use the energy God gives us to encourage each other to trust our Good Shepherd, rather than joining the media in their blaming the government and everyone else we can think of for everything that’s gone wrong! Let us not be like Israel who, according to Psalm 95, in the face of their LORD’s loving care, ‘hardened their hearts’ and forfeited their ‘rest’ (verses 7b-11).

The Kellers added this prayer to their comments on Psalm 95: “Lord, I confess the blindness of my understanding, the stubbornness of my will, the foolishness of my thought life, and the addiction of my heart to things of this world. ‘False and full of sin I am; thou art full of truth and grace.’ (Charles Wesley, ‘Jesus, lover of my soul’). Without that grace I am lost. I praise you that in Christ your grace abounds to me. Amen.”

Express Your Interest NSW Ambulance Clinical Volunteers

NSW Ambulance operates a number of clinical volunteer responder models across metropolitan, regional, rural and remote NSW.

Clinical volunteer opportunities are not necessarily available in every location across the state and are only in areas of identified need. Over 350 clinical volunteers provide first response clinical care to our patients in approximately 60 locations.

These programs are an important part of building the resilience of small communities and minimising the time between calling for help, and receiving initial care from clinically skilled responders, until paramedics arrive. This leads to improved patient outcomes.
