Other Scriptures remind me that this purpose is to ‘make all things new’ (e.g. Revelation 21:5), when the One who died on the cross for my sins as my Saviour will return in power as my Lord and King, when ‘every knee will bow’ and ‘every tongue confess’ his rightful reign (Philippians 2:10), confirming that the fulfilment of all God’s purposes in human history is complete. Ezekiel was commissioned by God to tell his people that God’s Plan was never ‘out of control’, even if it included the destruction of the Temple and the Holy City that were symbols of his power and presence among them, as well as their deportation to Babylon under the rule of wicked King Nebuchadnezzar.
While I was processing all this, and grappling with God’s strange providence in achieving his ultimate purpose, Brett was reminding me each Sunday of how to live in Babylon! Daniel and his three friends are an excellent, inspired and inspiring, example of what it means to do what Jeremiah commanded in his Prophecy: “Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce. Marry and have sons and daughters; find wives for your sons and give your daughters in marriage, so that they too may have sons and daughters. Increase in number there; do not decrease. Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which i have carried you into exile. Pray to the lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper.” (Jeremiah 29:5-7)!
The older I get, the more of a struggle I have in coming to grips with the fact that I am living in a ‘foreign’ and ‘hostile’, God-denying, world - the 21st Century version of ‘Babylon’ - and my Pastor is challenging me each week to have a more positive and optimistic attitude towards it, to PRAY for its PROSPERITY! Please pray for ME! At least I’m starting to get a better appreciation for what it would have been like to be a Judean in 696 BC, and what it means to keep on trusting in my God and Saviour, even, and especially, in the dark!
“The Lord is King! Lift up your voice, O earth and all you heavens, rejoice! From world to world the joy shall ring, ‘The Lord Omnipotent is King!’ The Lord is King! Who then shall dare resist his will, distrust his care; or murmur at his wise decrees, or doubt his royal promises? The Lord is King! Child of the dust, the Judge of all the earth is just; holy and true are all his ways: Let every creature sing his praise. He reigns! You saints, exalt your strains; your God is King, your Father reigns, and he is at the Father’s side, the Man of Love, the Crucified.” (Josiah Conder).
