This term we have rebooted our Years 2-6 Connect Groups fortnightly on a Friday. These are gender-based pastoral care groups, led by a teacher of the same gender.

Connect Groups provide an opportunity for us to teach social skills to boys and girls in a strategic and targeted way. We implement a Christian values program that can particularly address boys’ and girls’ issues more specifically with how to respond in various situations and improve social skills.

This term we are focusing on empathy and how to be a good friend. Our students will grow and learn together throughout their whole school life. Therefore it is important that they build trustworthy and lasting friendships. Today I had the opportunity to work with the Year 3 boys. After reflecting on the story of Jonathan's and David’s friendship in the Bible, we brainstormed what makes a good friend. The boys came up with some outstanding answers. Here’s a list of ideas produced by Lincoln, Harley and Tim: listen to one another, make each other laugh, share the same hobbies, friendly, different talents we can share, all Christians, get along well, be caring towards one another, thoughtfulness. 

Miss Russell taught the Year 4 girls and Caitlyn, Abi, Penny and Ivy thought of these ideas: sharing, loving, trustworthy, being upstanders, listen, help, comfort, kind, understand, forgiving, tell each other about Jesus.

During the next lesson we will be working through different scenarios and putting into practice these ideas to help foster positive friendships.

Social, emotional and spiritual development is particularly important for young people as they grow up. Development in these areas correlates not only with improved learning and academic achievement but also affects every part of a child's life.

Cupcake Day for Compassion

Last week, Secondary School took part in our annual cupcake day to raise money for our three Compassion children Pimyot, Holali and Dao. I am pleased to announce that we raised $1050. Thank you to everyone who got involved and well done on your generosity.

As we head into another weekend and get towards the back end of this term, let me encourage you to consider what is means to be gentle and lowly in heart; to be someone who is humble at your core. Next week at assembly, we will be considering what it means to show humility in all situations as we model our life on the one who never falters, never fails and is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. [Matthew 11:29-30]

Our goal was to not only introduce these topics but to have the Year 5 cohort understand and implement a range of strategies to enable growth in these particular areas. We encouraged students to take a holistic approach by considering how they can implement these strategies both at school and at home.

In week one we started by building on the student’s knowledge of the idea of empathy. We began with some basic activities to reintroduce concepts of emotions, understanding emotions and then applying empathy to their peers. The students were each split into pairs and given a topic to discuss. One student had to share a story about their topic, while the other student listened. The listening student then had to share what they had heard with the class. We asked the listening friend to focus on what emotions the talking friend may have experienced in their story.

In week two we introduced emotional regulation. We showed the class a short video on the idea of ¨flipping your lid¨ a concept constructed by Dan Siegal. This video spoke about the brain and how our upstairs brain can become disconnected from the downstairs brain when our emotions get out of control. This disconnect is referred to as ¨flipping your lid¨. We discussed strategies for putting our lids back on or intervening before we ¨explode¨. We taught the children some regulation activities including breathing, grounding and progressive muscle relaxation.

In week three we discussed teamwork with a particular focus on communication and respect. We played some games that illustrated how communication is essential in effective teamwork. We then discussed with the classes the idea of the ¨coach¨. We expanded on this idea by discussing who the coach is in different teams (such as classrooms, sports teams, families etc.). We then spoke to the classes about respect. We gave the class three important steps in how to respect the coach (or any other person). They were: accepting no as an answer, empathising with others feelings, and following the rules. The children were then tasked with a team challenge with one student in each team taking on the role as ¨coach¨. We then debriefed how the teams believed they did, how the coaches felt the team worked with them and each other and the purpose of communicating and respecting each other (to reach the goal together rather than individually). 

It has been a pleasure working with the Year 5 children. We are hoping to be a familiar face to them and build on these concepts throughout the year and as they transition to Year 6 and beyond.

Fortunately, the rainy weather held off but there were an abundance of puffer jackets among the group to fight off the cold.

The first leg of the journey was to hike down the first section of the Six Foot Track, to the Cox’s River campsite. It involved climbing over fences, a waterfall and a suspension bridge crossing. There were two among the group who decided that even the cold weather wouldn’t prevent them from swimming in the freezing cold river, while the rest of the group watched on in amusement.

The next day was a trickier walk, walking back to the beginning of the day prior – uphill. We stopped in at the Three Sisters to be tourists and take some photos before travelling to the caravan park which would be our campsite for the next two nights. Somehow, the campsite in the middle of civilisation was even colder than in the middle of nowhere.

The next morning we started the entirely uphill trek to the glow-worm tunnel at Newnes Plateau; it was compared to the Needles but was 100 times worse. At the top, it felt like we had been transported into a sort of prehistoric paradise which was almost pretty enough to distract us from our burning legs and chests. Ms Wilcockson employed her biology knowledge to educate the group about the bioluminescent invertebrates in the glow-worm tunnel and the types of rocks that we had walked past. That night we ditched the dehydrated meals and camp stoves for “family bonding” over Thai in a local restaurant – the highlight of many of our trips.

Despite the blisters and sore muscles, the Gold Qualifying hike was an overall great experience and will be a positive memory in the years to come. It was a great opportunity to challenge ourselves mentally and physically, spend time in God’s creation, make new relationships with people that we wouldn’t necessarily see at school and improve our skills at cards, cooking and packing light.

She shared about walking with God through hard times, both challenging and encouraging the secondary students from God's word. Here is an excerpt:

Two sisters and a Brain Tumour is the story of how I was forced to live out this faith when the rubber hit the road. It’s the story of 3 months of me saying ‘maybe’ in the face of unending difficulty, in the face of what could have been my sister’s death. Maybe. Maybe God hasn’t finished with her yet. Maybe he will work this for good. I can’t see how – but maybe – maybe.

During Term 1 students learnt about the photographer Levon Biss who takes incredibly detailed photographs of insects.

The first place the students visited was NSW Treasury. Students were given a presentation by two economists on how NSW Treasury provide economic advice to the NSW Government and how they assist the NSW economy.

After time at NSW Treasury, the students went across to Macquarie Bank to hear from two economists about the state of the Australian and global economies. Year 11 and Year 12 also heard about the type of jobs that are available in the banking and finance industries.

The Economics students had a great day together learning about the economy and potential careers. They took away fantastic experiences that they can now apply to their learning at school.

The junior girls netball teams represented the school with outstanding sportsmanship and determination. The team's skills improved with each game they played. There were some wins, draws and losses. We would like to thank Mrs Denny for her support of the B team on the day. Everyone had a great day of fun and friendship. I was very proud of all the girls and the way they played the game. – Mrs Watters

Whilst Monday was pretty cold at The Ridge, there was plenty of excitement about a day of netball. The senior girls displayed terrific teamwork all day and also demonstrated great encouragement of one another. Both teams were undefeated on the day. A couple of draws made for some very exciting finishes. – Mrs Bentley

Junior A’s Soccer Team

There are three keys to a successful sports team: teamwork, skill and fun. As a coach, I am happy to report that I saw all three of these on display. This is why the team was such a success! We came away with three convincing wins against Greenacre, Mount Annan and William Carey. The William Carey match saw five goals scored in quick succession from our team – a real highlight of the day! The boys were encouraging, fair and respectful. I even heard our bench cheering for the opposition at times, which just shows how much they were enjoying themselves. Our overall placing was fourth according to points. Congratulations! – Miss Ohlmus

Junior B Soccer Team

The Junior B team played their hearts out in five games on Monday. They faced some quality opponents, playing with determination and great sportsmanship. I was very proud of the way that they supported each other and grew in their teamwork throughout the day. Well done to all. – Mr Bluhdorn

Senior A Soccer Team

Monday was cold but warmed by the enthusiasm of the team as they prepared to play six games with a possible seven if they made the final. It was a fast-paced, exhausting day but they rose to the challenge. In the end four wins, a draw and a loss saw them playing in the final against William Carey. After a very even game and exciting moments for both teams, William Carey came away with a 1-0 win. In second position, Shire will also go on to play at the State Gala Day along with William Carey. Well done team on your teamwork, encouragement for each other and excellent sportsmanship. – Mrs Ellis

Senior B Soccer Team

The team played Inaburra, St.George, Regents Park, Hope Point and Macarthur Adventist schools in their pool games. We played a tough first round match with Inaburra drawing the game nil all. We won the next two games convincingly against St.George and Regents Park schools. Our fourth game came down to the wire – with a chance to level the game at 2, however, the scoring attempt was cleverly saved by Hope Point’s goal keeper. Our final game was a hard fought win against Macarthur Adventist winning 2-1. I was particularly pleased with how the team learned to pass to each other, work together in defence and encourage each other to play with great sportsmanship throughout the competition. A great day was had by all the players and spectators alike. – Mr Mellor

Our competitors came back covered in dirt and full of tales about a particularly treacherous course, with plenty of challenging hills and sloshy mud puddles to navigate! 

Despite the tricky conditions, four of our 29 competitors managed to place in the top 10 and are through to the CIS Cross Country to be held on 8 June at Eastern Creek. Our 10 Year old boys team managed to be the first team over the line and will also represent us at the next level.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” And the God who communicates these truths to us in his Written Word is the Creator of the Universe and the One who has clearly demonstrated throughout history that HE controls EVERYthing that HAS happened in the past, IS happening in the present, and WILL happen in the future. Earthquakes, landslides, sinkholes, floods, tsunamis, are ALL in HIS sovereign hands. Wars, unwarranted foreign invasions, dictatorships, governments and authorities throughout the whole world are ALL under HIS sovereign control.

The Covenant-honouring ‘God of Jacob’, the ‘LORD Almighty, the Author of Scripture, the Father of the Lord Jesus Christ, knows how to work ALL these things for the benefit of all who belong to him. In the light of all this, God calls us to do two things: 1. BE STILL; and 2. KNOW that HE is God. The verb to ‘BE STILL’ means to go limp, to relax, to stop striving and fighting and trying to help yourself, to hand over full control to someone else - the sort of thing we’re encouraged to do if we’re being rescued by a lifesaver in a rough surf! The verb to ‘KNOW’ means to have an intimate relationship with, to ‘own’ for oneself.  The ‘God of Jacob’ IS all the things this Psalm says he is, so if we really DO know him like this, it would be illogical NOT to be still. If I am anxious and struggling, it could only be because I don’t really KNOW him.

Having written all this, I must confess that I DO struggle with being STILL. When the Apostle Paul urges me, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7), I realise I need to work harder to KNOW God better, and therefore to be STILL. And I can know him better by reading his Word each day and spending quality time with him in prayer.

The first half of the rehearsal will be in small groups. This will be where students receive specialised instruction on their instrument. The second half of the rehearsal will be all together, where students learn to put all the parts together as they have fun playing as one big group.

The school is prepared to invest in this new initiative, and I believe that it is the best way for young students interested in learning an instrument to develop in skill and passion.

I’m excited to be able to tell you that this ensemble will be free of charge for parents and there are no plans to charge parents for their child’s involvement in the future.

The first weeks will be dedicated to students having a chance to play lots of different band instruments. From there, we will get started learning easy and fun pieces of music that progress students on their instrument.

For all of this to be possible, before we begin rehearsals, we need 20 students who are keen and committed to being part of this exciting opportunity.

Australian year 12 students can apply for up to five courses at the end of June. Rather than an ATAR, your application is based on your school’s recommendation. This can factor in your year 11 results, as well as other considerations.

If you don’t receive an offer for your dream course through the program, don’t worry. You’ll be re-assessed for your higher preferences after your ATAR is released.

Physical Aptitude Test - FireFit Training Guide from NSW Fire and Rescue

As firefighters, we put life first and we train to get it right.

Firefighting is a physically demanding occupation. Tasks include carrying heavy loads including personal protective equipment, handling temperature extremes, variable terrains and confined spaces, all of which impose unique physical and physiological demands upon firefighters.

The FireFit Training Guide is based on an eight to 12-week program, depending on each individual’s fitness level, and is available to help eligible candidates prepare for the Fire and Rescue NSW Physical Aptitude Test (PAT)*.

We have created a series of exercise focused videos called “Train Like a Firefighter” that will show you how each exercise relates to the physical demands required of firefighters.
