Joy and curiosity in young learners

Over the last two weeks I had the great privilege of reading to each of the nine Infants classes. I was welcomed on many occasions with some very creative bow tie themes – it seems I will not be allowed to wear a standard necktie ever again at this school! What struck me though, was the joy, the curiosity, and the unbridled sense of wonder in our young learners. Too often we see that spark die as children grow into adolescents. Is it society? Peer groups? The education system? Maybe all of these things.

One of my favourite parts of my role is the time I get to spend working closely with the Year 12 Leadership Team. As part of this, I have the real privilege to work with a student each fortnight as they share a devotion at our weekly assemblies. This week, Arielle Lee spoke wonderfully as she shared with the students about compassion. Arielle spoke from Ephesians 4:32 as it says ‘Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ, God forgave you.’ As we consider what compassion looks like, Arielle left us all with the challenge to be imitators of Christ in the way we forgive one another and learn from God in his boundless compassion. Thanks Arielle!

This week has been an action packed final week of Term 2. Students in the musical have been busily practising and being measured up for costumes. Our classes all came up with their own BE of the week - ranging from ‘BE loving’ (because that encompasses EVERYTHING!) to BE like Jesus and BE strong and courageous. We also celebrated the end of term at a Junior School assembly and raised money for MAF on Friday.

German immersion excursion: Students speak only German for seven hours

Guten Tag!

Coping with reality

Rev Bruce Christian

In my recent daily readings I’ve been reading through the last few chapters of Deuteronomy and the beginning of Joshua. I can feel Moses’ concern for the LORD’s Covenant People as they prepare to start a new life in the Promised Land. He knows they will face many temptations, many challenges and many overwhelming discouragements. He knows also that they will not always remain faithful to the LORD under the pressure of these. So he reminds them of how they had experienced, over the last forty years, God’s unfailing faithfulness to them, and his power to rescue them and provide for all their needs. In the light of this, they had no reason to be discouraged, and no excuse for failing to live in accordance with God’s plan for their life under his rule.
