God’s physical creation, the laws of maths and science, the seasons, the tides, and so much more are such a source of wonder and worship – as is the amazing ability of the human mind to grow, learn and adapt. As parents and teachers we need to do what we can to keep this spark from dying out in our students. A “childlike” (but not “childish”) optimism and curiosity is a foundation to life-long learning, as is the resilience to tough out the hard problems with determination and grit.

In staff news, I am pleased to announce that Mr Luke Moran will be joining us next term in the position of Christian Studies/PDHPE teacher, replacing Nathan Asher, who is heading to a leadership position at Nowra Christian School. Luke is currently teaching at Inaburra School, and has also worked as a Children’s Minister, SRE Coordinator, a Missionary in Indonesia and teacher at the International School there, and a ministry leader in the Year 13 Gap Year Program. We look forward to welcoming Luke to our staff.

As we wrap up the first half of the year, may I encourage you to reflect on Jesus – the visible image of the invisible God, through whom is reconciled all things. We exist as a school to serve our Lord and to help you raise and educate your children in Christ. May the holidays give you some precious time with your family.

Academic Awards Assemblies

On this past Monday, we were able to recognise the achievements of many students across Years 11-12 who received academic and effort awards in the assembly. It was lovely to see many parents of the awardees in attendance. Well done to all students who received an award! I also want to recognise that there are many additional students working hard day in day out here at school who may not necessarily receive an award. Regardless of whether you received a fancy sheet of paper on Monday, we celebrate commitment, perseverance and hard work and we want to recognise everyone who is in this category. Well done!

We will be having an academic awards ceremony for Year 7-10 recipients on Monday, 1 August at 11:10am in the school hall. Parents of the awardees are invited to attend and will be emailed separately.

We are also excited to announce that Expression is back this year and will take place on Wednesday, 17 August from 7:00 - 9:00pm here at school. Expression is a wonderful opportunity to highlight some of the incredible works of our gifted secondary students in the creative spaces and subjects. Farewell Mr Asher

As many of you would be aware, Mr Asher is leaving us at the end of the term to take up a new position of Head of Secondary School at Nowra Christian School.

Mr Asher is a wonderful teacher, leader and friend and I am sure will be missed by all. He leaves our school better off than when he started over 6 years ago and what is our loss is Nowra’s blessing. He has contributed to our school in so many different ways through his teaching of PDHPE, Studies of Religion and Christian Studies as well as his year coordinating, CRU leadership and contribution to our staff team. 

Please join me in praying for Mr Asher and his family as he transitions to his new role at Nowra. I am excited to announce that Mrs Burnes will be taking over from Mr Asher as Year 7 Year Coordinator from Term 3. 

In other news, Mrs Holdsworth is taking over from Miss Semenchuk as Year 8 Year Coordinator from the beginning of term 3 as well. Many thanks to Miss Semenchuk for her amazing work as a year coordinator across the last 18 months. She will continue to be involved with Year 8 and will stay with her Pastoral Care class.

I hope that these holidays provide all our families with an opportunity to rest and relax and enjoy some time away from school. Read a good book, do some exercise, explore God’s creation, laugh out loud and be reminded our marvelous creator and Saviour in Jesus! ICAS Competitions 2022

This year we will be giving students from Years 3-6 the opportunity to participate in ICAS Assessments in English, Mathematics and for the very first time – Spelling Bee. They cost $19.25 each assessment and are conducted at school using the student’s Chromebook. ICAS Assessments are online assessments, designed to recognise and reward academic excellence.

The English Assessment is on Tuesday, 16 August, Spelling Bee on Wednesday, 24 August and Mathematics Tuesday, 30 August.

You will need to register your child and pay at the ICAS website by 29 July. Please note that we will not be able to reconvene your child’s assessment if they were absent on the assessment day.

Our Amazing Me educator Rowena Thomas, is a Christian Educator with many years of experience presenting a program that aims to strengthen and facilitate positive family relationships. Rowena will be answering questions such as: What are the differences between boys and girls? What is puberty? Why does it happen? Why do we go through it? What changes can be expected? The parents, students and staff who have attended in previous years found her very engaging and informative and were encouraged as Rowena gave the presentation from a clear Christian perspective. There are two seminars to choose. Families can attend one or both.

Session 1: Bodies and Babies

This session is best for Years 3 and 4 students and their parents or for Years 5 and 6 who have not attended any of these programs in the past. Topics for this program include: The reproductive organs and their correct names, with a brief focus on child protection, reproduction, contraception, the growth and development of babies during pregnancy and birth.

Session 2: Bodies and Puberty

This session is recommended just for Years 5 and 6 students and their parents.Topics for this program include: What is puberty? Why do we need to go through puberty? When does it start? How long does it take? The changes both physical and emotional that can be expected for girls and boys.

These sessions are not compulsory but recommended by the school to facilitate positive conversations in families about these topics. Whilst the school does cover some of these topics in PDH, Rowena and our school believe that conversations in families is the best way to learn about these issues.

Students spent the morning having lessons from experienced skiers/snowboarders and the afternoon free skiing down slopes they had practiced in the morning. A special mention goes to those students who were skiing or snowboarding for the first time and were able to complete their first green run in some icy conditions! Skiers and snowboarders of all abilities are welcome to future snow trips. Thanks to Mr Richardson for organising the trip and Mr Arthur, Mrs Burnes and Miss Roberts for staffing the trip.

On Monday, 27 June, Year 12 had an excursion. We watched a film and then went to a restaurant. We only spoke German (absolutely no English), so we spoke German for about seven hours. It was a great challenge and very fun. The film was great, the food was delicious, but most of all, the conversations were wonderful.

The innovative take of the production combines education and storytelling with a powerful cast and theatrical design, transporting us to the remote military base which serves as the backdrop to the play. Marriage, family, love, trust, ambition and jealousy are all put under the severest trial as Iago rages a relentless battle against Othello, themes which resonate throughout the play. Despite being performed in traditional Shakespearean language - to which we were grateful for the help of our English teachers - the performance has a surprisingly modern setting, illustrating the relevance of Othello throughout time and even in our own lives. Through this performance, we were provided insight into the symbolism and characterisation of Shakespeare’s dark play, which will be exceedingly useful as we continue our critical studies in class. 

Overall, Year 11 had a great time viewing this modern version of Othello, and were very grateful for the opportunity as we continue to study this timeless play in class.

The students were challenged to choose a food trend in 2022 and create a photo that reflected that trend. 

As you can see in the photos, the students are really enjoying using the new food technology room. It is such a professional and sophisticated space now.

Students attended lectures prepared by HSC markers and were given examination technique hints and tips. It was a helpful and reassuring day for our HSC Society and Culture students.

Please be praying for all of our HSC students as they prepare for their Trial HSC examinations at the beginning of next term.

We went on a tour through the precinct with the help of our knowledgeable guides, who informed us of the ways that Barangaroo is growing each and every day. 

We learnt about the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability and how Barangaroo especially is implementing new ways of saving waste. It was interesting to know that our world is working to improve on our huge waste issues, and that simple things like turning the lights off and opening windows can conserve energy.

In addition to learning about sustainability, we were able to put it into practice. We sat around Nawi Cove and were able to get hands on; testing the noise level, wind level and pH of our surroundings. 

We enjoyed the water front views as we ate lunch and explored lesser known parts of the city containing old terrace houses. Much to our surprise, we found out that a penthouse apartment at the top of the Crown costs around $140 million, a clear demonstration of Australia’s crazy housing prices. 

Overall the excursion was well organised and an impactful experience. On the behalf of Year 10 I can conclude that it was a fun day out in the city while still learning about how places around us are changing over time. 

Thank you to the teachers for organising the outing and for controlling a large group of teenagers on a windy day. Thanks also to Observatory Hill for guiding us throughout the day.

As he handed over the leadership to Joshua, the LORD gave this command, “Be strong and courageous, for you WILL bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I MYSELF will be with you.” (Deuteronomy 31:23).

I get discouraged when I see the way our world is going, and especially as I see the way our own country is going. The anti-God forces seem to be winning in the battle for the souls of men. It is with a tone of triumphalism that the media reports the results of the census which indicate that fewer than 40% of Australians registered themselves as ‘Christian’. This is not surprising to us, because we are fully aware from our interactions within our society that far fewer Australians have actually understood and responded to the call to repent and believe the Good News of Jesus as Saviour and Risen/Ruling Lord! It is disheartening to see the legislators making it harder and harder for us to proclaim Biblical truth and to educate our children in the context of a consistent and rigorous Biblical worldview.

So it is good that men like Moses and Joshua are reminding me to reflect on God’s promises, and his unfailing faithfulness to them. When I do this, I am ashamed that I feel a bit discouraged! I have much more solid ground for trusting God than they ever had. I have the information that the miraculous deliverance from Egypt, the crossing of the Red Sea, the Provision in the desert and the Conquest of Canaan, were all only ‘shadows’ of what God was going to do through Jesus. I should take a leaf out the Apostle Paul’s book when he wrote: “I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power for us who believe.  That power is like the working of his mighty strength, which he exerted in Christ when he raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fulness of him who fills everything in every way.” (Ephesians 1:18-23). And I should take hold of Jesus’ promise to Peter in Caesarea-Philippi in response to that disciple’s profession, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”: “… on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” (Matthew 16:16, 18).

In the words of Hebrews 10:23-25 - “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised IS FAITHFUL. And let us consider how we may spur one another on towards love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us ENCOURAGE ONE ANOTHER - and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Readers and Writers assist students in accessing their examinations and overcoming the learning barriers which make the HSC difficult. We are in need of both readers and writers to support students in the upcoming HSC examinations across October and November. It would be preferable to have consistency as much as possible across the dates below for the reader and/or writer:

N.B.  Times are the maximum allocation, the examination time may end earlier than listed. All times above include sign-in time with the office, presiding officer and pack up/sign-out time at the end of the examination

What qualities should a reader/writer have?

• Ability to communicate clearly in English with a sufficient literacy level
• Understanding of the subject(s) being examined
• Clear, legible handwriting (if writing for the student)
• Willingness to spend time practising with the student
• Patience and sensitivity
• Understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality and an ability to do so

Who cannot act as a reader and/or writer?

• A relative or friend of the student
• A currently employed teacher or private tutor
• A non-teaching employee at the student's school (eg a teacher’s aide, school secretary, lab technician)
• Anyone who recently taught the student
• Anyone who has a close relative sitting the same examination
• A NESA appointed Examination supervisor

Work Experience

University of Sydney Chemical Engineering Work Experience

Hosted at the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, we offer work experience placements for Year 10 students who want to learn more about chemical engineering.

By participating in our interactive activities, students will gain insight into various industries where chemical engineers work and career pathways for chemical engineers. You’ll undertake activities in areas that concern our industry partners.

Students will also be introduced to cutting-edge research where chemical engineers apply their ingenuity, innovation, and creativity to find solutions to the ‘real-world’ problems that are facing our communities.

While you’re with us, you may have the opportunity to see and learn how plasma can be used in water, medicine and agriculture, learn about membrane technology and how this is used to clean and recycle water, and make your own zinc-air batteries.

Placement will run 12-16 September 2022.

Meet a Mentor – Aviation Careers Mentor Program

Meet Yvette Payne – Aircraft Maintenance Engineer

Introducing Yvette who is one of the many awesome mentors in the Program.

Born into an aviation family, Yvette (Vee), didn’t work in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering (AME) until her early 20s.

Vee first enjoyed several other roles including process line operator, logistics and also worked as an explosive ordnance technician; but none sparked her passion like aviation.

After completing full-time study, she took a position as an apprentice AME, working on military helicopters and has never looked back.

“I call the Aviation Industry a “choose your own adventure” type of career, the possibilities are almost endless and the sky isn’t even the limit anymore.”

Vee enjoys working on aircraft and recently moved into a Quality Analyst role. This role utilises her skills and knowledge accumulated throughout her career to help make aviation safer and more efficient.

Even as a mother with a toddler, 18 months old, Vee has found the aviation industry supportive in continuing a career, she feels she is thriving and learning and describes a career in the aviation industry “one of endless opportunities”.

All music applicants will need to apply through UAC or direct.

You may either audition into the degree or submit qualifications for Band 4 HSC Music, or AMEB theory and practical qualifications or TAFE qualifications.

To audition for the degree, book a time through the link. You will be asked to perform two short, contrasting pieces or songs (or excerpts of two pieces) and/or perform one piece and present one or more compositions as scores and/or recordings. Works performed can be covers or originals, performed solo or with accompanying musicians or with backing tracks on your phone.

Cassandra Christensen had always loved teaching, even before she studied to become an educator in the classroom. ‘I taught dance, I was a swim instructor and I also volunteered and taught in Kids Ministry at church,’ she says.

Food technologists are responsible for the research and development of new food and drink products. They also work to improve the quality of existing products, processes, packaging, storage, and safety of foodstuffs.

How to become a Food Technologist in Australia

Step 2 – Complete a relevant undergraduate degree. This could be things like food science, nutrition, health, dietetics, and more.

Step 3 – You might also like to consider other relevant qualifications, such as First Aid and safe food handling courses.

Step 4 – Start working as a Food Technologist.

Step 5 – Consider specialising in a particular area, such as fermentation, microbiology, product design, or more.
