In The Australian last month, journalist Greg Sheridan wrote:

“We are on the way to becoming, for the first time, an avowedly anti-Christian nation. Not just non-Christian, but anti-Christian. The census tells us. The culture tells us. The law tells us.” 

And yet the word of God remains true and calls us to be salt and light. Sheridan goes on to say “Christians must understand they are a minority. That should free them to become a creative, dynamic minority, offering something magnificent to society.” 

Christian historian and writer, John Dickson, echoes this sentiment:

As an avowedly Christian school, I expect that we may not escape the rebuke of a changing society, and as the Head of the school, I admit to finding that challenging. But I am increasingly aware of the need to act and live as followers of Christ, letting our light shine before others. Pray that our school and staff will stand strong for Christ, and that our students will continue to grow in maturity to serve the Lord, cheerfully offering “something magnificent to society”.

Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation. Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life. And then I will be able to boast on the day of Christ that I did not run or labour in vain. Research into student learning supports this, with a large body of evidence reinforcing an intuitively known belief that students’ motivations and feelings about learning are just as important as the content of their learning. It is not just what we learn, but how we feel about what we learn, which counts in the long term (Arnold, 2005). Typically, if we enjoy what we are learning, or how we are learning it, we tend to care more about it, and have more positive feelings toward the learning experience. Similarly, when we don’t care, learning can feel mechanical, apathetic, or just perfunctory.

This notion of caring about what we are learning and finding joy in being creative, curious, bold and tenacious learners, is what I ask students to hold in the forefront of their minds as they consider elective subjects over the coming weeks. As students in Year 8 and Year 10 express their subject preferences in the upcoming process, teachers are often asked for advice and guidance. After almost two decades as a teacher, I can whole heartedly suggest that students choose subjects that they enjoy. Their reasons for enjoyment might differ considerably, but when a student is intrinsically motivated, their efforts and results are often more fulfilling than when they are driven by extrinsic motivation. As your child discusses the subject options with you, I encourage you to ask them questions that cause them to reflect on their enjoyment of the subject. Ask if they think the subject is meaningful and important. Question their reasons for choosing the subject. Remind them about the length of time for which they will be studying it – is it something they can sustain? I suggest steering students away from playing the game of which subject might scale better in the HSC, or which subject their friends will be choosing.

We encourage you to have frequent and open conversations with your children about their learning. They are also more than welcome to speak to any of the teachers about their learning and subject options as they rise. Keep an eye out over the coming weeks for information regarding subject selection in Stage 5 and an Information Evening for parents and students moving into Stage 6.

Teamwork

As we grow older, we often lose that innate sense of challenge and risk. We become afraid of making mistakes, we don’t like the feeling of discomfort. This week, I challenged students to buck that trend! To push back against this desire and to give it a crack, to give it a go. 

This may come in the form of their learning. Regardless of one's abilities, take risks! Don’t just go along with the motions. Ask questions. Pursue tangents. Be curious. Dig deeper. Give it a crack, give it a go. Especially when it’s hard.

This may come in the form of other areas at school. Join the sports team. Join the debating team. Come to CRU (lunchtime Christian group). Help out at assemblies. Play a musical instrument. Stand up to bullies. Create experiences. Take risks. Buck the trend. Give it a crack, give it a go. Especially when it’s hard.

And above all else, of most importance, students were challenged to show the courage to pursue God. In an increasingly anti-Christian society, we are called to buck the trend and be a Jesus follower. Take your faith seriously, put yourself out of your comfort zone and stand for Christ. As Christians, the goal is not to blend in but be a shining light to those around you. We read in Matthew 5:16:

16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

At times it may be uncomfortable and difficult; but know that there is not one thing more worthwhile, more rewarding and more fulfilling than knowing Jesus as your Lord and Saviour. Give it a crack, give it a go. You won’t be disappointed!

Last term 3 teams from Year 5 and 6 competed in the NSW SPIKE Prime Competition. 

73 Teams, 262 Students and 1000’s on lines of code later the results are in!

The competition required them to research this year’s theme, Journey, and work together to design and build a robot using the Lego SPIKE Prime kits to complete a journey into a particular world or place. As part of their submission, teams were required to create a 3-minute video showcasing their robot and complete a very detailed portfolio of their innovative design, the process they used to build and code their robot, including modifications and problems that occurred along the way.

The three teams gave up many, many hours in and outside of school to work together on their submissions, persevering to ensure their robot and code were complete.

Congratulations to all teams for their hard work, excellent collaboration, and creative designs. 

Team “Marty Mechanics” went back to the future, “The Cool Bobs”, entered Avengers world to help save the day.

A special congratulations goes to team “Stego- Saw-Us!” for being awarded first place in NSW for their dinosaur, “Dorothy” who journeyed through a television set to travel through the movie set of Jurassic Park. 

Team Stego-Saw-Us, are now preparing for and will now take part in On Stage another robotic competition which will be held in August.

Students learnt about the marketing, finance, operations and human management strategies of Luna Park through a presentation at the start of the excursion.

Once the presentation was completed, the students were able to sample the products of the park with plenty of time for amusement rides. This included having lots of fun going on the Sledgehammer, Volare, Hair Raiser and the Wild Mouse rides. 

Year 11 Business Studies came away from Luna Park with great memories of the time spent together and with a great case study for their Yearly Examination later this term.

They spotted, buses, cars, many types of trucks, golf buggies, model aeroplanes and lots more. The highlight for many was standing on the pedestrian bridge between Sutherland and Jannali and watching the trains. How exciting when the driver blew the horn. We finished our excursion with a picnic and bike riding at Parc Menai.

Our mums, dads and grandparents met us there with our bike/scooter and a picnic lunch. It was so much fun riding around the park and then climbing on the play equipment. 

Thanks Mr Wilson for being our wonderful bus driver! 

By Prep 1 & 2

As a part of this unit the students were shown work by a number of different artists, including Andy Goldsworthy who creates ephemeral (temporary) sculptures using found natural materials. The students were challenged to design and produce their own ephemeral sculptures in the bush, focusing on line, pattern, colour, texture and scale.

Year 5 had so much fun creating our artworks that Mrs Christian and Mrs Tilley decided to make a competition where Year 5 could take a photograph of sculptures they made at home. We were amazed at the beautiful and creative entries from students. Year 5 students, teachers and the Visual Arts department were provided with a chance to vote for a winner. The competition was fierce and voting was tough, the top three places received a prize for their entries. Well done Year 5!

You may be wondering what a Training Band is and who it is for, as we’ve never really had anything like it here at Shire Christian School before.

Training Band welcomes keen students who love music but have never played an instrument before as well as students who are in Year 4 or who went through the Year 4 program and would like to dig a little deeper, as well as students who have been playing their instrument for a couple years.

Each week, Training Band will rehearse from 8:20 to 9am on Fridays. The rehearsal starts by splitting up into instrument groups. Each small group will be led by a highly experienced tutor and students will learn the fundamentals of how to play their instrument. At the midpoint of the rehearsal time all the students and tutors come back together to make a big noise as they rehearse some pieces of music together.

Excitingly, there will be no cost for this ensemble for our keen students. We also have a number of instruments available for hire for the nominal fee of $100 per year, which includes one yearly service for free.

The training was made possible through the NSW Government's Mental Health Recovery Package which aims to support anyone whose mental health has been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We have completed the training and, whilst we recognise that this topic is very confronting, we and the staff found it very informative, interactive and essential in equipping first responders (often teachers and parents) in talking to a young person about suicide. As the welfare team we would encourage you to have a look into the information provided by LivingWorks and take them up on this offer for free online training. We are very happy to have further conversations with you if you would like to find out more about the training.

During Term 1 the welfare team including, Head of Secondary, Assistant Head of Secondary, Year Coordinators, Head of Junior School, Pastoral Care Admin, and the Counsellors attended and completed the Mental Health First Aid Course. Mental health first aid is the help offered to a person developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. Like first aid, the aid is given until the appropriate professional help is received or until the crisis resolves.

Mental health first aid will typically be performed by someone who is not a mental health professional but someone in the young person’s network including teachers, parents, carers and youth group leaders.

The Mental Health First Aid Course teaches how to recognise the cluster of symptoms of different illnesses and mental health crises, how to offer and provide initial help, and how to guide a person towards appropriate treatments and other supportive help.  

During Term 2 we delivered an overview of the training to Secondary School staff. We have found the training to be extremely helpful for staff already and would also encourage you to look into completing this course yourself. As a reminder we have created and resourced the Shire Christian School Community in both Secondary and Junior School through the Welfare Hub. This can be accessed through SEQTA. In Secondary School we have recently created a page on alcohol and other drugs, in particular resources on the topic of vaping and addiction.

The accounts remind me of how hopeLESS life in this world becomes when we reject God and his perspective in favour of ‘humanism’, or doing things according to what seems right in our own eyes. I must admit, I don’t really need to be reminded of this while ever the media persists in reflecting, as well as shaping, our culture in Australia, and the world, today. But it is helpful to know that nothing takes God by surprise. Moreover, no matter how bad things get, God never relinquishes his sovereign power and control in the affairs of men. He continues to use even weak, sinful, rebellious human beings (like you and me!) to fulfil his purposes, to bring glory to his holy name, and to preserve and build his Church!

I know I will get a slight bit of relief from the despair of Judges for a few days of reading through the love story of Ruth and seeing the foundations being laid for the ultimate ‘kinsman-redeemer’ who is my Lord and Saviour. Then, of course, will come the period of Samuel and the Kings of Israel which will cause me to long again for the True King of whom all the fore-‘shadows’ will be so inadequate, the ray of hope that Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther provide, after which Job will encourage me to keep trusting in my faithful, sovereign, redeeming God even when everything seems to be going wrong.

But I am looking forward to getting to Psalms 1 & 2, to be reminded yet again that what really matters is for me to resist ‘walk[ing] in the counsel of the wicked or stand[ing] in the way of sinners or sit[ting] in the seat of mockers … but, rather, delight[ing] in the law of the LORD, and on his law meditat[ing] day and night … so that I might be “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither” and “whatever he does prospers” … with “the LORD watch[ing] over [my] way”! And I will be able to hear his reassuring voice in Psalm 2: “Why do the nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and against his Anointed One. ‘Let us break their chains,’ they say, ‘and throw off their fetters.’ The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. Then he rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying, ‘I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill.’  I will proclaim the decree of the LORD: He said to me, ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father. Ask of me, and I will make the nations your inheritance, the ends of the earth your possession. You will rule them with an iron sceptre; you will dash them to pieces like pottery.’”

Work Experience with Museum of Applied Arts & Sciences

We are committed to inspiring creativity and curiosity through placement programs at the Powerhouse Museum and Sydney Observatory that enhance students’ educational experiences.

Our Secondary Student Placement Program provides a snapshot into the world of museums and cultural institutions. It gives high-school students a taste of an industry that they might one day be part of.

This program can be used as part of a secondary student’s work experience requirement in Year 10, 11 and 12.

Please note only 2 students are placed each week, so placements are limited.

Applications open 1 August for the Spring holidays program, which will run from 4 – 6 October.

Work Experience with Services Australia

If you’re in year 10, 11 or 12 or equivalent you can register for a work experience placement.

Placements are unpaid and run for 5 days on a full time or part time basis. Full time placements run for 5 consecutive business days. Part time placements run for 5 days spread over a maximum of 5 weeks.

On your work experience placement you’ll get:

• real workplace experience
• the chance to develop a range of skills while working on a variety of tasks
• to see the work we do to deliver vital services to Australians
• to work in one of our many offices, service centres or Smart Centres across Australia

Scholarships for Y12 Students Quantity Surveyors

AIQS offers a number of scholarships each year for Year 12 students who qualify for entry into a Quantity Surveying, Construction Economics, Construction Management (Economics) or other appropriate course at an AIQS accredited university in Australia.
Of the scholarships offered, at least one Equity Scholarship will be awarded to a student experiencing educa- tional disadvantages.
We offer a limited number of scholarships for year 12 students who qualify for entry into an AIQS accredited course in Australia.
The value of the scholarship is AU$5,000.

Career Opportunities in the Chicken Meat Industry

Australia has one of the most efficient chicken meat producing and processing industries in the world. Chicken meat is a hugely popular food with Australians and sees Australian consumers spend approximately $6.6 billion each year on chicken meat products. Its unique structure creates an industry rich in diverse career, and career progression, opportunities.

Early offers made through UAC

Because UAC has several offer rounds in the first half of the year, many Year 12 students ask us if they can receive an offer now.

The short answer is ‘no’: the first UAC offers to Year 12 students will be made to Schools Recommendation Scheme (SRS) applicants on 11 November 2022. Offers made then are not based on HSC results and ATARs. Instead, they are based on other criteria like Year 11 results and the school’s rating of the student.

Before November, offers are made to applicants who are not in Year 12 this year and already have a qualification UAC can assess. They’re often applying to start a course in Semester 2.

Most UAC offers to Year 12 students are made in late December, after the release of ATARs.

If you’re after an early offer, make sure to apply directly to the university of your choice through their early entry program. You can find a full list of early entry programs, including closing and offer dates, in our Early Entry Guide.

UNSW Law Admission Test (LAT)

If you’re a domestic applicant and would like to study the Bachelor of Laws at UNSW, you’ll need to sit the Law Admissions Test (LAT). Your LAT score, in addition to your academic results, such as ATAR + adjustment factors, is used in UNSW’s selection process.

The 2022 LAT is on Thursday, 29 September 2022. The LAT is offered once per year and results are valid for 2 years. The LAT will be offered at in-person testing venues in Canberra and Sydney, or via remote proctoring.

Register before 5pm AEST 12 August 2022 to avoid paying a late fee.

How to become a Financial Planner in Australia

To become a Financial Planner, you’ll need to complete an accredited degree, undertake a year of training and an exam, and gain registration with the Australian Security and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Step 1 – Complete Year 12 with a focus on English and Maths.

Step 2 – Complete an approved undergraduate qualification, generally a Bachelor of Business majoring in Financial Planning, or Bachelor of Accounting. You can see the full list of approved qualifications here. 

Step 3 – Complete a full-time professional year that includes at least 1,500 hours of work activities and 100 hours of structured training (a total of 1,600 hours).

Step 4 – Complete the Financial Adviser Exam before starting the third quarter of your first professional year.

Step 5 – Register for an AFS License with the Australian Security and Investments Commission (ASIC).

Step 6 – Complete 40 hours of professional development each year, and comply with the Code of Ethics.
