At a Sunday service recently in my church, a young man called Marshall led us in singing from his guitar, then Tim welcomed the congregation and did some notices. Following that Emily led the prayers, and then Daniel preached the word to us from Psalm 8.

That's not particularly unusual, however I realised that all four of these young adults were past students at Shire Christian School. I couldn't help but contemplate the verse in Isaiah 55: "so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it."

It was so encouraging to see God's word bearing fruit in young people contributing and serving our Lord. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and while I know our school is just one of the many influences in our student's lives, I reflect on the legacy of Shire and its committed Christian staff, partnering with parents and the church to raise children in the ways of the Lord, for a life of service and purpose.

Located 12kms from Shire Christian at 6/133 The River Road, Revesby, the uniform shop will be open all year round including school holidays, from 9am until 5pm, Monday to Friday, and on Saturdays from 9am until 1pm. This is a significant increase from the two or three half days the onsite shop is currently open. The store offers multiple change rooms and ample parking, for hassle-free uniform shopping.

Mr Stonestreet said that the change will be a great advantage for parents, giving them more flexibility to book fittings, while retaining the convenience of click and collect at the school. 

“We understand that parents are busy, and it can be a challenge to visit the shop during the limited hours it is currently open,” Mr Stonestreet said. 

“We also know that the current shop is very small, and parents have had to queue outside, sometimes in the rain!”

“So I am pleased we have been able to work with Ranier to provide this solution for our families.”

The old uniform shop will close on Thursday, 3 November. Uniforms will be available from Monday, 7 November, in the new location. 

Orders can be placed on the Ranier website. Parents can choose to have them delivered or be notified when they are available for collection at school reception.

These are always entertaining events that celebrate the incredible music and dance talent here at Shire Christian School. In Australia, around 14% of 12 to 17-year-olds have ever tried an e-cigarette, with around 32% of these students having used one in the past month. In most of these cases, the vape was obtained from a friend. This is despite it being illegal to use, sell or buy nicotine for use in e-cigarettes to anyone in Australia without a prescription.

Another recent study testing the chemicals and toxicity of 52 flavoured e-liquids available for sale over the counter in Australia found the following:

• 100% of e-liquids were inaccurately labelled
• 21% contained nicotine despite this being illegal in Australia
• 100% contained chemicals with unknown effects on respiratory health
• 62% contained chemicals likely to be toxic if vaped repeatedly

As a school we apply both a proactive and reactive strategy towards vaping. We firstly educate our students about the dangers of e-cigarettes. The effects of vaping is now a mandatory component of the PDHPE syllabus from Years 7-10. Last term we also had our local police liaison officer come and visit our Year 11&12 students to educate them about the nature of vaping and some of the dangers associated with it. As a reactive measure, this term we have also installed vaping detectors into our school bathrooms. They are designed to detect when vaping is taking place and sends an email to the relevant staff members. We hope that we don’t need to use them!

On top of this, we rely on you; our wonderful parents to have conversations with your children about vaping. Our Secondary ‘Welfare Hub’ is a rich source of helpful information on a variety of issues for both parents and students. In particular, we have information available on alcohol and other drugs, with a particular focus on e-cigarettes. You can access that information here. Thanks for partnering with us on this relevant issue. The health of our community is of prime importance to us and we want to work together on this. I have no doubt that as further long-term studies of vaping take place in the years to come, we will be finding similar discoveries to smoking as they discovered in the 50’s and 60’s.

Our current model consisted of 8 House Leaders chosen from the Year 5 cohort according to which Sporting House they were in. Those students then represented the Junior School in a variety of ways – not just sporting events.

We believe that the new model allows more students the ability to step into leadership opportunities. There will be more students encouraged into leadership, greater opportunities for leading including potential collaboration with our High School student leaders. The students who can apply to become leaders are also not limited by which Sporting House they belong to.

Here is a general overview of Student Leadership in the Junior School in 2023:

• There will be a Junior School Leadership team of 10 students chosen using a Leadership Passport style application. All Year 5 students will be given a passport to complete.
• Teachers will explain the process to students and outline the leadership opportunities and responsibilities.
• After completing the leadership passport, a shortlist will be chosen, and those students prepare and present a short speech to the Junior School at a morning assembly.
• The Student Leadership Team is chosen by staff based on applications and speeches. 
• After the Student Leadership Team is chosen, a further 4 House Leaders will be chosen from the remaining Year 5 student body for opportunities to lead at specific carnivals in collaboration with the Student Leadership Team. 

The Student Leadership Passport asks students to reflect on these aspects of leadership:

• Christian Character
• Being a Role Model
• Care and Cooperation
• Respect for one another

Students will reflect on these aspects and work towards meeting specific criteria. They will then work with their teacher to achieve the criteria in the passport. 

Our Student Leadership Team and House Leaders will be chosen by the teaching staff and presented with badges at the end of the term.

Our staff are looking forward to working with our student leaders in Term 4 and into 2023 to further develop leadership in the Junior School.

The Good Samaritan is a timeless story that originates in the Bible. Perhaps today, this is something you have strived to be - a good samaritan. But what does it mean? In the New Testament in Luke 10:25-37, Jesus tells this parable to an expert of the law who desires to test Jesus. “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” he asks, and Jesus replies “what do you think? What does the law (Old Testament) say?”. Of course the man recites “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and, ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’”. He answered correctly, he could do that and live. But the expert in the law wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus “well, who is my neighbour?” And the famous story continues…

In Year 1 we have been learning about parables Jesus told. We have actions to help us understand that parables are earthly stories with a heavenly meaning. We have learnt that the good samaritan was an unlikely person to help the Jew! Yet, he broke through the cultural and religious barriers at the time to help someone in need. Jesus is the best example of the Good Samaritan. He is the most unlikely person because he is God himself, who did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. An unlikely hero who shows never ending love, compassion and mercy on all people.

‘Kids Giving Back’ is a program that provides experiences for children and young people to give back to others, by undertaking activities that will assist the most vulnerable members of our community. Rhema, along with her Mum and Grandmother, as well as other children and parents, learnt about the needs of the homeless community and thought of ways they could help give back. Children like Rhema learnt to cut fruit in bite size and then put them onto sticks. Children wrote messages of hope to the homeless on the boxes that were delivered.

What does it mean to be a good samaritan? To show mercy to others. I could say to you reading this, be like Rhema, show mercy to those in need. I am so proud of Rhema, who is thinking about others before herself, and is a constant focus in our Year One classroom.

Students have been studying Medieval Europe and Japan, their daily life and significant people and practices. 

Students first listened to an interactive talk where they were able to hold replicas of different weapons and clothes from Medieval times. In the middle of the day, Year 7 were trained as Medieval knights in archery and played outdoor games common in the 12th century. In the afternoon, Year 7 trained further in jousting and swordsmanship.

Year 7 History students came away from the incursion with a much deeper understanding of Medieval Europe and its impact on the development of our modern world.

“Hopefully they will sign me, which would be a dream come true,” he said.

The sixteen year old has been playing as goalkeeper since nine years old and says he would love to one day play for Australia and win the World Cup.

Samuel will move to Spain with his dad and brother for at least three months, and will be homeschooled during his time overseas. 

Samuel recently represented Shire Christian School and the state playing as goalkeeper in the under 16s NSW All Schools Team in the School Sport Australia (SSA) National Football Championships. Samuel’s team won the competition in the final moments of their last game, beating Western Australia 7-0, the exact score required to win overall on goal differential. Samuel not only kept a clean sheet in the final game for NSW, he didn’t let in a goal for the entire competition.

At assembly on Monday, Head of Secondary School, Mr Peter Richardson, commended Samuel’s achievements to the Secondary School.

“This is an amazing achievement. We’ve never seen one of our students have an opportunity quite like this in professional football before,” he said. 

“We’ll miss you, Sam. We look forward to hearing back about how you go and we’ll be supporting you from afar,” Mr Richardson said.

For those who are not familiar with Rocket League, it is a very popular video game that is estimated to have 50,000-100,00 players worldwide at any given moment. It involves a combination of arcade style soccer and car racing.

Our students did extremely well, with two of our teams progressing through to the top eight. A special congratulations goes to Cameron Honeyman, Paul Lucas and Nick Clapham who narrowly missed a spot in the grand final with two last minute goals against them in their final.

I would like to thank the IT department for all of their technical support which allowed this day to take place and be a great success.

What I am finding most helpful is that he is not concentrating on the specific details and trying to come up with a definitive interpretation of what all the details of the dreams mean on the stage of world history; rather, he is encouraging us to look at the ‘Big Picture’ of the prophecy. It is quite natural for us to be frightened by the description of the various ‘beasts’ and their destructive capabilities - after all, Daniel himself tells us that he was pretty scared by them too (see Daniel 7:15; 8:27; 10:8)!

But the ‘Big Picture’ is something quite encouraging and relieving, and it takes away the need to find, or the danger of ‘predicting’, a water-tight interpretation that will tie in with events around the world! (In my lifetime, I am aware of at least four ‘accurate predictions’ of the date of the Lord’s Return based largely on Daniel’s prophecy, all of which failed to eventuate - one of which was my 50th birthday in 1990.)

Back to my point. The encouraging, and accurate, message that comes from Daniel’s scary visions is that, no matter what disastrous things might happen around us to frighten and unsettle us, the ultimate victory belongs to God, and will culminate in the Coming in Power of the promised ‘Son of Man’. It is interesting that the Jews of Jesus’ day shared this very positive hope, which is why they were so incensed when a low-born, un-schooled carpenter, from ‘Nazareth’ of all places, kept on making many pointed claims to BE this ‘Son of Man’ (eg Mark 14:60-64, etc).

Sabine Baring-Gould captured the ‘Big Picture’ message of Daniel’s visions when he wrote, “Crowns and thrones may perish, Kingdoms rise and wane, but the Church of Jesus constant will remain”. Nothing that happens in our world that might, from our perspective, point to a rather gloomy future - things such as the rise of powerful, God-denying regimes with far-reaching nuclear capabilities, or the threat of climate change, or even the way our own culture is being taken over by atheistic humanism - none of these things can frustrate God’s ultimate plan to ‘make all things new’ at Christ’s Return. Nor, for that matter, will it take God by surprise, because he has committed himself in writing through his unfailing prophecies and promises in his inspired Word, to establish HIS everlasting Kingdom where “there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” (Revelation 21:4). As King David says, referring to God: “Your kingdom is an EVERLASTING kingdom, and your dominion endures through all generations. The LORD is faithful to ALL his promises and loving towards all he has made.” (Psalm 145:13); and as God himself revealed to Daniel: “Then the sovereignty, power and greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven will be handed over to the saints, the people of the Most High. His kingdom will be an EVERLASTING kingdom, and ALL rulers will worship and obey HIM.” (Daniel 7:27).

However, not everyone is suited to becoming a medical professional such as a doctor, nurse or physiotherapist. For people who want to help, without having one of these roles, there is the option of becoming an assistant. For instance, there are Allied Health Courses which people can take in order to qualify for a role in assistance. Allied health assistants provide assistance to health practitioners including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, podiatrists, speech pathologists and dietitians. Another option is to become an assistant in nursing.

1. Melanie Perkins the Founder and CEO of Canva

Melanie’s company, Canva, is a ‘unicorn’ (valued at over $1 billion), and around 75 million people use her product. She started her first business at 14 while still at Sacred Heart College in WA. After dropping out of the University of Western Australia at 19 Melanie started Fusion Books, the predecessor of Canva.

She was rejected by hundreds of Venture Capital funds before she found the right people to grow her business, and she continues to innovate – Canva has just launched a productivity suite to rival Microsoft.

2. Scott Farquhar co-Founder and co-CEO of Atlassian

Scott grew up in Western Sydney. After leaving James Ruse High School he met co-founder Mike Cannon-Brookes at university, where the pair came up with the idea for an IT Support business. That didn’t work, so they decided to sell the software they had been developing to run the IT support service, and the rest is history.

Twenty years down the track, Atlassian is one of the world’s largest tech platforms and employs almost 9,000 people.

3. Kayla Itsines co-Founder of Sweat

After starting work as a personal trainer at 18, Kayla started posting workout routines and her clients transformations on Instagram. She quickly gained a huge following and started selling her workout guides as e-books. Her career boomed and she went on to launch Sweat a platform for her followers to connect on, which she sold in 2021 for $400 million with over a million followers.

4. Eric Peck CEO and co-Founder of Swoop Aero

Eric graduated from uni with a degree in technology majoring in aerospace. He went on to complete his MBA, and was a Royal Australian Air Force Hercules pilot before launching Swoop, a drone delivery service,….. and he’s still only 30!

5. James and Adam Gilmour Founders of Gilmour Space Technologies 

Brothers James and Adam started their venture-backed Australian company back in 2013. Their Queensland based start-up is now one of the leading space companies pioneering new and innovative hybrid propulsion technologies designed to offer lower cost access to space. They’ve received over $26 million in backing to date.

6. Vu Tran and Andrew Barnes co-Founders of GO1 

Childhood best mates Vu and Andrew started their first business Busy Links when they were just 16. Vu the son of Vietnamese refugees is also a qualified Doctor and still works one day a week in that role.

They went on to start GO1 in a garage in Brisbane in 2015, helping businesses and individuals to find the training that they need. There are already over one million users on the website and GO1 is now valued at over $1 billion.

7. Angus Goldman and Alex Harper co-Founders of Swyftx

Angus and Alex started their crypto exchange business Swyftx in 2018 after meeting on school science camp at the University of Sydney. By 2021 their trade volumes were reaching over $3 billion a month and they have no plans of stopping there.
