It’s good to be back. A big thank you to Paul for covering the role so competently while I was on leave.

Out of all the shenanigans and vaudeville that made up the US presidential election campaign, one thing I saw on the news stood out to me. A middle-aged average “Joe” from “rust belt” America was being interviewed in a bar before the election. He reflected that for all his life, he had had friends and workmates who had held very different political views, yet they had all managed to get along well with each other, and then he said that whoever wins, it would be nice if we could get back to that spirit again.

Learning Leader Awards

I was so encouraged this week when I met with three delightful students who are the worthy recipients of the Learning Leader Awards for this month. To be able to award students from diverse subjects such as Mathematics and Drama is a testament to the positive and effective learning attitudes being developed across our school.

New Bell Times for 2025

Mr Paul Carter

We are expecting that our new car park will begin construction early in 2025. While a car park is not our first choice in overall building needs, it has been mandated by Sutherland Shire Council before further significant improvement can be made to our facilities. Therefore it is essential that we undertake this project to unlock future work which will benefit our students. The car park will provide up to 70 new car spaces which will also make parking easier for our staff, visitors and parents at events, and reduce the impact on surrounding streets.

Learning Together Event

On Wednesday, our school had the privilege of hosting speakers Melinda Tankard Reist and Dr Marshall Ballantine-Jones, who spent the day engaging our Year 10 and 11 students, staff, and parents on the critical issues of porn culture, consent, and respect. Their sessions offered a powerful opportunity to confront the challenges young people face today from media, social platforms, and pop culture, which often promote harmful messages.

Reformation Day, Orientations, Subway Day and Remembrance Day Assembly

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” (Eph 4:2) Patience is a virtue that doesn’t come easily for many of us, making it a fitting characteristic of the Fruit of the Spirit to explore with our students this week. We encouraged them to reflect on how their attitudes in ‘times of waiting’ can be used to glorify God. The Bible has much to teach us about patience and highlights the boundless patience God extends to His people.

Australian National Championship Robocup Competition: Year 8 team places 2nd in international competition and 1st in Australia

Four teams from Shire Christian recently competed at the 25th Junior RoboCup National Competition, held at the University of Queensland in Brisbane. The event welcomed 234 teams from across Australia and Asia Pacific region. Nationals is a great opportunity for students to showcase their robotics skills, collaborate with peers, and compete in various categories like Soccer, Rescue, Maze and On Stage.

Nathan and Adriel represent Shire Christian and present their game Shooting Stars to PAX Convention in Melbourne

Last term Nathan and Adriel won the Year 7-9 GODOT Engine category of the Australian STEM Video Game Challenge. Their prize included hoodies with their winning game design on it and the opportunity to visit PAX for the 3-day Convention and present their game as part of the event.

PAX Melbourne is a major gaming convention, featuring a wide range of activities and exhibits designed for gamers, industry professionals, and fans. The boys and families experienced the vibrant gaming culture.

Outstanding results at Bebras computational thinking and problems solving challenge

Round one of Bebras was held earlier in the year, with Round 2 held this term, giving students another opportunity to complete the challenge and work through a different set of problems. Congratulations to our Year 5 and 6 Numeracy Groups and the Year 3 and 4 Focus Group students, for excellent focus and outstanding results!

Student Report: CSSA Tennis Competition

On Wednesday 30 October, I had the opportunity to participate in the CSSA tennis competition. I (Ben Robinson) was one of four players from Shire Christian (Blake Kalan, Jon Coffey and Tim Nelson). We didn’t see or watch each other play as we were all in different pools. Tennis is a very individual sport but all our scores at the end would be added together for an overall school winner (unfortunately we didn’t win).

First Shire Girls Super 8 cricket team begins with success

Our very first-ever Super 8 cricket team, made up of an incredible group of talented girls, made history as they competed in Penrith last week. The team played with heart, skill, and determination, bringing home two wins out of three games and proudly placing second in their division.

Will and James shine at different mountain bike events

 

Will Rupenovic (Year 8), had a successful weekend (26/27 October) on his mountain bike at the Rocky Mountain – Mogo Mania Superflow stage race. He won the overall race for his age group riding about 80km over the 2 days! Congratulations Will!

Hope in God’s Word

I was really encouraged on Wednesday this week by reading verses 49-56 of Psalm 119, the verses that all commence with the sixth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, ‘Zayin’. The section starts, “Remember (‘zacar’) your word to your servant, for you have given me hope.”, and then, like the whole of Psalm 119, it refers to God’s written Word in each and every verse with words/phrases like ‘promise’, ‘law’, ‘ancient laws’, ‘decrees’, ‘precepts’ that point to the Scriptures.

Stu Ford Memorial Challenge

Cronulla Triathlon Club have organised another Stu Ford Memorial Challenge for 23 November 2024. It will be held at Wanda with the parkrun first and then the ride so participants can do either or both. The entry fee will be $50 with all proceeds split between Love Mercy and Black Dog. There will have a bbq breakfast again after the activities.

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me (Paul), or seen in me - put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you” Philippians 4:8 & 9

  • Pray that our minds would be set on that which is true and noble, right, pure, lovely and admirable and that we will learn from the writings and example of the apostle Paul.
  • Pray for the students who have now completed the HSC exams and pray for an enjoyable evening next week at their formal.
  • Thank God for the Learning Together events and for all the guest speakers, students, parents and teachers involved. 
  • Pray for families in our school community experiencing times of anxiety, loss or family upheaval.
  • Pray for continued safety as students and staff travel to and from school each day.
