As I sat down to watch the show, I felt a wave of nervousness, and I’m sure many of our students shared that feeling. But as soon as that first spotlight illuminated Jojo and the Cat in the Hat, I was completely captivated. I couldn’t take my eyes off the stage. It was an absolute privilege to witness our students perform night after night. The talent, commitment and effort each student put into their role were evident in every scene.

This production was the result of countless moving parts – teachers who dedicated hours to supporting rehearsals, helping backstage, and even running the BBQ each night. High School students assisted with everything from backstage work to face painting. An army of parents played a vital role, from helping with rehearsals to makeup to prop-making. And, of course, our students, who often went above and beyond to support one another in every way possible.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone in our school community who contributed. It takes an exceptional team to create a show of this caliber, and this community truly delivered.

School ‘worked’ for me. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here as a student. I truly feel like I giggled and laughed my way through six years of high school.  Interspersed through these years were poignant moments of loss, uncertainty, creativity, grace and profundity. Through it all, the certainty of God and His providence was always clearly presented to me.

Since becoming a teacher, a mother, and now serving as Academic Head, I’ve come to deeply appreciate that school is not always easy for everyone. It has been a privilege to reflect on how we can ensure every student feels meaningfully connected to an active, respectful, and Godly learning community.

I am passionate about the role our learning framework plays in making this vision a reality. Learning for Life will continue to be embedded at Shire over the coming years, evolving with greater intention and in diverse ways. 

As I reflect on my journey—both as a student and now as an educator—I’d like to share a few lessons with the students of Shire that I’ve learned along the way. 

The Power of Being Relational

Looking back, I’ve learned that school friends are precious. They can be lifelong companions through life’s biggest moments. Find friends who point you to Jesus—they are invaluable. As you leave school, God will bring special people into your life. Stay open and consider how He may be leading you to connect with others.

The Power of Being Resourceful

School teaches us to observe and wonder. One day, I hope you travel—get lost in the back streets of Venice or stand in awe of the Alps. Experiencing new places and people fosters curiosity and growth. The skills you develop now will serve you for life. You don’t yet know God’s plans, but your character, values, and skills are already being shaped. 

The Power of Being Resilient

Learning is meant to be hard, messy, and complex. School is a safe place to struggle and grow. The more you practice overcoming obstacles, the better you’ll navigate life’s challenges. School was easy and enjoyable for me, but not for everyone. As a teacher, I’ve realized the importance of ensuring everyone feels they belong. 

The Power of Being Reflective

Without reflection, we don’t grow. Noticing and evaluating our actions helps us plan wisely and focus on what truly matters. Thoughtful reflection leads to better decisions and meaningful progress.

The Power of Renewal

True renewal—deep and lasting—comes only from our hope in Christ. The things we chase can’t replace the joy of becoming more like Him. When we extend compassion, generosity, and forgiveness, we reflect the grace we’ve received and experience the power of true renewal.

If I could leave you with one verse it would be this one from Psalm 46. 

“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”

This verse is more than just an encouragement to slow down—it’s an invitation. An invitation to experience God’s presence, to hear His voice, and to be in awe of who He is. It is a reminder that we are insignificant compared to his magnificence. Yet in our seemingly insignificance, He believes us to be so precious and worthy of His love. All the above domains and dispositions can be explored if we start with this Biblical truth, of being still, of truly seeking God’s heart and His will, of relying on Him when we feel overwhelmed with learning or friendships and knowing that He is greater, more powerful and has a grand purpose for each of us.

When we do this, we will not only hear Him more clearly, but we will experience a peace and confidence that the world cannot give.

So, be still. Be in awe. Know that He is God. And trust that He is always with you.

In his message, Brett looked at the character of Thomas. He explored how Thomas was fearful when he saw Jesus for the first time after his resurrection. When Thomas was able to see his scars and interact with Jesus, his greeting of “Peace be with you” became a reality in his life.

There is no doubt that anxiety and fear is prevalent in today’s society. Teenagers face many pressures. I hope that over the break students will be able to slow down and recharge. I pray that they will embrace Jesus as the one who can truly replace fear with peace.

If you get the chance, have a talk to your child about the message they heard at assembly this week. If they need a prompt, ask them to tell you about the story of Brett hitting the kangaroo.

Another highlight was being led in worship by our Year 3 students and Mr Read, as well as hearing from our secondary gospel band, who powerfully performed Glorious Day.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” – 2 Corinthians 5:17

This week in Junior School, we’ve been exploring the theme of restoration. We’ve been encouraging students to consider how Jesus’ work on the cross not only restored our relationship with God, but also enables us to seek restoration in our relationships with one another. My prayer is that our students will continue to be transformed and renewed, growing each week to reflect our risen Saviour (Romans 12:2).

My interest in debating began when my older brother joined the debating team in Year 8. Attending his debates sparked my enthusiasm, and I eagerly awaited the opportunity to participate. When Mrs Breen announced the debating team sign-ups during my first school assembly. I promptly expressed my interest to Mrs Wilson.

Following the Debating Workshop, which served as a trial for prospective team members, I was thrilled to be selected for the team. I met my fellow teammates, Tom A, Esther G, and Matthew L, and together we began preparing for the Gala Day.

Under the guidance of Mrs Wilson, we received our debate topics and had approximately one month to research and craft our speeches. As the third speaker, a role my brother had previously held, I felt a sense of familiarity and confidence.

The Debating Gala Day took place on Week 9, Wednesday, and our school participated in online debates, eliminating the need for travel. Our team performed exceptionally well, winning both debates and demonstrating the talent and dedication of our team.

I would like to extend my sincere gratitude to Mrs Wilson and Mrs Saunders for their invaluable support and guidance throughout this experience. Their expertise and encouragement instilled in us the confidence to participate and excel.

Special thanks to Mrs Wilson for her tireless efforts in organizing the event, despite her busy schedule and recent long service leave.

To all participants and organizers involved in the CEN Debating Gala Day, I express my deepest appreciation. This experience has left an indelible mark on my heart, and I will forever cherish the memories and skills gained.

As Proverbs 18:13 reminds us, "To answer before listening—that is folly and shame." This experience has taught me the value of careful consideration, thoughtful response, and respectful dialogue.

This term, students have been considering the rights and responsibilities of employers and employees, researched Work, Health and Safety legislation and examples of implemented policies. They have also reviewed their interview skills and prepared a WHS Incident Report on a Workplace scenario. Students have utilised their Learning for Life dispositions in noticing, collaborating, reasoning and communicating; skills they can take with them into the future. It has been a wonderful learning time for students to consider the Biblical foundation of work and the privilege that it is to work.

The excursion began with an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the STC. Students explored the costume, set, and prop departments, where they gained a deeper appreciation for the craftsmanship involved in bringing a stage production to life. One of the highlights of the tour was visiting a working performance space currently being set up for an upcoming play, allowing students to see the theatre in action.

A particularly fascinating moment came in the set construction workshop, where students observed a set being built for Happy Days by Samuel Beckett – a production that Year 11 Drama students will attend next term. The group was intrigued by the clever techniques used to create realistic textures, such as stone, using lightweight materials. The skill and artistry involved in making such convincingly real sets left a lasting impression.

Later, students attended a performance of Picnic at Hanging Rock, directed by Ian Michael. This innovative reimagining of the classic story stretched students’ understanding of what theatre can be. With bold stylistic choices and a contemporary vision, the production challenged traditional narratives and showcased the power of theatrical reinterpretation.

Following the performance, students took part in a Q&A session with members of the cast and crew. Naomi S from Year 11 bravely stepped up to ask a thoughtful question, representing the school with confidence and curiosity.

Throughout the day, students engaged respectfully and enthusiastically, making the most of this valuable learning experience - even when other audience members weren't so well behaved! They returned inspired by the possibilities of performance and with a newfound appreciation for the artistry behind the scenes. It was a memorable day that brought the drama classroom to life and celebrated the vibrant world of Australian theatre.

Jemima and Angie scored the crucial goals for the girls' team, whose strong defensive unit held firm in the final minutes to secure the win. The team now prepares to face Kirrawee High School in the upcoming round.

In the boys' match, a physical and fast-paced encounter saw both teams pushed to the limit. Despite a strong performance and a tightly contested game, the boys fell in extra time. Coach, Mr Rafferty praised the team’s character and competitiveness throughout the match.

The day kicked off with the Boys 200m Freestyle Relay. Lincoln dove in first, setting the tone with an impressive leg. Joseph followed, powering through his 50m before handing over to Mickey, who swam a strong section, passing the baton to Daniel for the final stretch. The team finished in the top half, and we couldn’t have been prouder of their teamwork and effort.

Next, it was time for the individual events. Eva and Daniel each swam the 50m Freestyle, Breaststroke, Backstroke, and Butterfly, while Elizabeth represented us in the 50m Breaststroke. All our swimmers put in fantastic performances, with several achieving personal bests along the way!

I couldn’t be more proud of every student for not only making it to the CIS but for competing with such determination and skill. They truly represented us with pride and sportsmanship!

Jacob placed 3rd in his age group in the 10km event, while Hamish, Mr Moore and Mrs Sneddon also secured 3rd place finishes in their respective 5km age divisions. Ben narrowly missed the podium, finishing 4th in his age group for the 5km run.

Held in the Domain and around Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, the Run2Cure is a fun-run organised by registered charity Neuroblastoma Australia. Its mission is to raise awareness of childhood cancer, provide support for affected families, and fund much-needed research into neuroblastoma.

Shire Christian School students who participated included Eliza, Jacob, Henry, Hamish, Lucas, Wesley and Ben. The event provided a meaningful opportunity for students to make a difference while demonstrating endurance, commitment, and community spirit.

The team of Coby, Lachlan and Sam placed 3rd in the Under 14 team division, competing against a field of 60 teams – a fantastic result that reflects their teamwork and determination. In the individual event, Darcy finished 12th overall, an outstanding personal achievement in a highly competitive race.

Congratulations to all competitors for their efforts, sportsmanship, and representation of the school.

There were students from Christian schools from all around NSW representing their zones. Our U15 girls won two of their games to come second in the pool, only to lose in the semi finals and come 4th overall. Our Open boys had a tough day of touch football, losing all of their pool games, they played in a play-off against Nepean Zone and won, coming 7th overall.

All of our students played well and were outstanding representatives of our school. Congratulations to them all!

This is what makes Easter so exciting. The atoning power of Jesus’ substitutionary Death on the Cross, and the glorious victory of his Resurrection and Ascension, enables sinners like us in ‘the land of the dying’ to become citizens of Heaven, ‘the land of the LIVING’ - and all this by GRACE ALONE through FAITH ALONE in JESUS ALONE.

EASTER is an annual REMINDER and CELEBRATION of the FACT and REALITY that we CAN pass FROM ‘the land of the dying’ TO ‘the land of the living’!  Although we are to fulfil whatever days the Sovereign Lord ordains for us in ‘the land of the dying’, we can KNOW FOR CERTAIN that we are heading for ETERNITY in ‘the land of the living’ with our redeeming Saviour. Even better than this, there is a ‘now-but-not-yet’ aspect of all this: in the Gospel of John we read the promise of Jesus himself: “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me HAS eternal life and will not be judged but has [already - perfect tense] crossed over from DEATH to LIFE.” (John 5:24). Yes, we are already CITIZENS of HEAVEN, and are only serving out our remaining days in ‘the land of the dying’ as temporary EXILES. 

Yes, for me, EASTER IS EXCITING: “God sent his Son, they called him, Jesus; he came to love, heal and forgive; he lived and died to buy my pardon, an EMPTY GRAVE is there to PROVE my Saviour lives! … And then one day, I'll cross the river, I'll fight life's final war with pain; and then, as death gives way to VICTORY, I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know he lives! Because he lives, I can face tomorrow, because he lives, all fear is gone; because I KNOW HE holds the future, and life is worth the LIVING, just because HE LIVES!” (Bill Gaither).
