Shire Christian School alumnus, Jack Martin, was awarded Motorsport Photographer of the Year at the Motorsport Australia National Awards in Melbourne this week.
“[I am] so very humbled to receive this award last night at the Motorsport Australia Gala Dinner!” Jack said.
“I've come to know and work alongside so many brilliant photographers and am fortunate to become friends with a lot of them, and to know that I'm one of the best is such an amazing feeling!” he said.
Jack graduated from Shire Christian School in 2015, and with the encouragement of the school’s careers advisor, teachers, friends and family, Jack pursued his passion for photography by undertaking a Diploma in Photo Imaging at TAFE.
“It took me years to learn my craft and I continued shooting at events, gaining a following, and every time aiming to be better than the last event I shot,” he said.
“It wasn't until 2020 that I really started to find my feet in shooting professionally and although COVID was a massive setback, I bounced back and have proven myself to be amongst some of the best in Australia.”
Jack said that the best advice he could give students wanting to pursue a career in photography was to be persistent and to keep shooting.
“Network with people, other photographers who might need help, and start to build up social connections in the industry.”
“For people wanting to photograph, incorporate the things that you love. Whether that is portraiture, landscape, architecture, for me, Motorsport is my passion and being able to merge the two together is such a joy because it doesn't feel like work to me.”
“I'm doing what I want to do in life. Never give up!”
“Being able to travel across Australia to go to these motorsport events is something special!” he said.
Toyota Australia recently published a behind the scenes look at Jack’s work at the NATCAP Rally. Check out the video on Youtube.
