Docendo discimus: By teaching, we learn

‘Docendo discimus’ is a Latin term that translates as “by teaching, we learn.” That sentiment characterised our Professional Development staff week in January this year. As we continue to immerse our staff in our new Learning Framework, we position ourselves as curious, determined learners who seek to improve, refine and transform what we do and how we do it.

Staff have been on a 6-month journey, during which they have been professionally challenged, encouraged and supported to consider how the learning culture at Shire Christian is experienced by both teachers and students. Through resources, workshops and presentations, staff have been reflecting on concepts such as knowledge transmission, conceptual frameworks, beliefs about student ability and the importance of the language we use when we construct and communicate learning environments.

The humbling and exciting consequence of developing and implementing this new framework has meant that many of us have come to embrace and value ‘docendo discimus,’ that by teaching, we in fact, are constantly learning. What a privilege it is to embark on 2024, with the launch of our new Learning Framework on the horizon, and a refreshed appreciation for what it is to be a good learner; one who is ready, willing, and able.

Over the upcoming Engagement evenings, a range of visuals around the school and language shifts in the classroom, our whole school community will be partnering together as we delve into the research-underpinned beliefs about ‘good learning.’  With a commitment to our framework, as we shape positive attitudes and approaches in the classroom, students will become more self-aware of themselves as learners and also begin to recognise the particular practices and mindsets that “good learners” adopt; essentially, moving towards a belief that learning is learnable.
