In just six short weeks, Mr Mekael Barnes has become an integral part of the Shire Christian School community in his role as the school psychologist, working alongside Mrs Rebecca Mitchell. Returning to the place where he once roamed as a student, Mr Barnes brings a unique perspective and a heartfelt commitment to supporting the well-being of our students.
"This school played a big role in my life, helping me build friendships, learn, and grow in my love and knowledge of Christ," he shared.
His fond memories of school include his favourite subject, Studies of Religion, where he explored how people make sense of the world. "I learned more about how Jesus is the answer to how we can truly make sense of our existence," he said.
Mr Barnes pursued his studies at the University of Wollongong (UOW) and discovered a unique fondness for Statistics while studying Psychology.
His professional journey includes being a research assistant for Project Air at the University of Wollongong, volunteering at Lifeline, where he provided telephone crisis support, and working for the Department of Education in various schools, gaining experience in Primary, Secondary, and Schools for Specific Purposes (SSP's).
Mr Barnes shed light on the importance of his role as a school psychologist, "My role is to support students by giving them a safe space to share what they are truly thinking and feeling about difficulties regarding their well-being."
He emphasised working collaboratively with teaching staff, parents, and external services to support student well-being at the school.
"If done well, our work has the potential of allowing students to feel heard, understood, and loved," he said.
Looking ahead, Mr Barnes expressed excitement about working alongside students, staff, and families at Shire Christian School. He is eager to advocate for students and help them feel heard. Additionally, he is looking forward to growing in his own love and knowledge of Christ, integrating his faith with his profession.
Mr Barnes has been a dedicated football player since the age of four. During high school, he seized a remarkable opportunity to play football in England against prestigious clubs like Tottenham Hotspurs FC.
He is also an avid reader. "I love to read and talk with people about deep things," he shared, emphasising his interest in connecting with others on meaningful topics.
Having already had the opportunity to meet many and engage in activities like playing football with students, Mr Barnes expressed gratitude for being back at his old school. "It's great being back at the school I attended as a student, and I feel honoured to be able to serve this community in Christ's strength."
Mr Barnes, recently married, shared his love for prayer and his commitment to running a prayer group at his church. He also reflected on his participation in the Youthworks Year 13 Gap Year program and the Uni Bible Group at UOW, both of which played a pivotal role in deepening his understanding of God and His Word.
As we welcome Mr Barnes back into our school community, we are excited about the positive impact he will undoubtedly make. His unique blend of personal experiences, professional expertise, and unwavering faith in Christ promises to contribute to a supportive and nurturing Christian environment for our school community.
