On Tuesday 9 March, our Primary Rugby League teams travelled to Gwawley Oval, Taren Point to represent our school in the annual gala day. This was the 19th year we have participated in the day, however, the first time we have sent an all girls team!
It was a warm and humid day, difficult to stay hydrated and conserve energy. A credit to all who played under the hot conditions. We had record numbers participating-38 students (two senior boys teams and one senior girls team)! Each team played three to four, 20 minute games.
Our Senior Girls Team and Year 6 boys team went through the day undefeated with the Year 5 boys team winning one game. There were some outstanding runs and spectacular tries, along with some very tough tackling. A tremendous effort from all the players. Opposition teams were state schools such as Gymea Bay, Marton, Laguna Street and Yarrawarra Public Schools.
The teams have been training hard at school for the past 4-5 weeks - giving up 3 lunchtimes each week to learn how to play tackle football. I have loved seeing the students’ high level of commitment and perseverance, along with their skills improving each week. The wonderful teamwork and comradery displayed on the day was fantastic!
Thank you to all involved!
A special thank you to Jade Wagstaff who volunteered her time to assist in the coaching of the senior girls team. Jade also played in the rugby league team when she was in Yr 6. Thanks also to Mrs Gifford and Mr Kennedy for assistance with training the teams beforehand and on the day. It was another fantastic season of footy! Looking forward to next year!
