Strategies for active learning

Mr Brett Hartley

A key theme for this year is active learning. If students are learning actively, rather than passively, they are much more likely to remember important content, develop critical thinking skills and express themselves creatively. In the week before school started this year our teachers worked collaboratively to develop active learning strategies for their students. Appreciating that the learning needs of our students vary, our teachers were very mindful of the need to ensure that the strategies catered to those differences.

Engagement Evening

Mr Paul Carter

We are looking forward to meeting with parents at the Junior School Parent Engage Evening on Wednesday 6th March.

Whether you are a new family to the school or have been here for several years, the night will be extremely worthwhile for all. It will be a great opportunity to meet your child’s teacher, hear from them about the year ahead, engage with other parents and also find out more about building resilience and bullying.

HSC Drama students perform at Offstage Showcase

On Saturday night 5 students from last year's Year 12 Drama class performed at Offstage, the alternate showcase to the NESA run Onstage (a presentation of exemplar performances from last year’s HSC). These students were specifically nominated as exemplary pieces of theatre by the HSC markers who visited our school, affording them the ability to apply for Offstage for which they were subsequently chosen.

A school with no rules!?

On Tuesday 5 February, all Stage 1 students watched a SocS puppet show (SocS stands for 'social skills'). They met an unhappy Prince, Augusta Blusta the 2nd who was tired of waiting to inherit his father's kingdom. He decided to travel afar in search of a place he could claim as his own. He came to Shire Christian School and, deciding it needed a king rather than just a principal and teachers, he declared himself king of our school!

Reason for hope

Rev Bruce Christian

I was reflecting last week on the relevance of the second half of Romans Chapter 1 (verses 16-32) to our situation today. Three things struck me: the continual relevance of the Bible in every age; the fact that God is holy and righteous and therefore the sinfulness of the human condition necessitates the outpouring of his wrath in his world; and that he exercises his sovereign rule over the whole situation no matter how out-of-control things might seem to be from our limited perspective.

TryBooking payments

As most parents would be aware, Shire Christian School uses the TryBooking online platform to collect payments for a range of items and activities that aren’t billed on school fee accounts.

In the past, excursions had to be paid for in this manner. You may have noticed that beginning in 2018, most school excursions are now covered by school fees.

Like all online payment platforms, TryBooking charges transaction fees. The school has absorbed these transaction fees in the past but after a recent increase in these costs, we will reluctantly have to pass them on in 2019 for TryBooking payments.
