Admittedly I found some of his conclusions and recommendations a little too alarmist. His comment likening school principals to drug pushers because of their insistence on teenagers using devices was a bit rich; however, these concerns aside I have little doubt that this book will provoke parents and teachers to think more carefully about teenagers and their use of smart phones and other computer devices. Parents who may not have the time to read the book may be interested in a podcast interview (Conversations with Richard Fidler, ABC radio).

Gillespie invests a significant amount of time providing scientific and statistical evidence to contend that the most typical and problematic teen addictions e.g. smoking, drug-taking and alcohol abuse are on the decline; however, teen addiction to electronic devices is increasingly taking their place. He goes on to provide quite compelling evidence to demonstrate that teen addiction to devices is widespread and causing a great deal of harm.

Over the next few newsletter articles I hope to share some of Gillespie's thoughts and findings. In summary, Gillespie contends that:

1. The biology of puberty makes the teen brain uniquely fragile. It makes teens susceptible to addictions that can last for life and usher in mental illness.
2. Parenting is much more permissive and parents need to harden up to save their kids.
3. Unfettered access to screens is driving an epidemic of addiction, depression and anxiety, the likes of which we have never witnessed before.

At various points throughout the book, Gillespie shares stories and examples to help illustrate his research findings. What he wrote about the highly popular online game Fortnite was sobering and concerning. The game sees 100 players compete against each other in a fight to the death using an array of weapons on a deserted island. However, gratuitous violence is not the primary concern for teenagers when playing this game because there are no gory blood spatters and the characters are more like cartoons. By mid-last year there were 125 million people playing the game across the world, 68% of whom are aged between 10 and 30 and the majority of players are male.

Gillespie contends that Fortnite has successfully employed every strategy known in the gaming industry to make people addicted to it. While the high-quality graphics and the element of luck contribute to the addictive qualities of this game, it also has a strong social element. Players/gamers can be in a team of up to 4 people where they cooperate to build defences and find weapons. It seems that many teenagers will deprive themselves of sleep and be distracted from their studies or other responsibilities so as to not let their team members down.

Gillespie shared the story of a 13-year-old boy whose father placed very strict limits on his son’s involvement with the game, resulting in aggressive protests and ultimately compromises. For example, the father allowed the boy to continue watching the game after the time limits the family had set for playing it had expired. The reason the boy demanded that he continue watching the game was just in case he needed to intervene to prevent his team from losing. Another disturbing story was an argument between a mother and her son over the game which resulted in the mother hurling the device the boy was using to play Fortnite into the family's swimming pool. The boy, fully clothed, jumped in after it.

I trust that this series of newsletter articles on the risks associated with the use of devices will be helpful, particularly for those parents who are already struggling with some of the issues I have alluded to.

Our Year 10 Food technology students prepared and ran a café for the night with homemade mouth-watering doughnuts (the jam ones were my favourite) and provided barista style coffee and tea. I was impressed by their great work ethic and the kind way they made visitors feel welcomed. 

For the first time at expression, the manual arts work rooms were opened. This allowed student works to be demonstrated in situ and the smell of timber brought back school memories for many guests.

I enjoyed viewing the painting and photos produced by some of our younger students, right from the moment I arrived at the front of the school.

The newly renovated hall didn’t disappoint: the acoustics were amazing, it had a fresh feel and the heating system allowed visitors to escape the outside winter chill.

During the night it was great to reconnect with the many previous students that were in attendance.

I’m very thankful to our teaching staff for their professional guidance and support of their students in the lead up to the showcase.

Expression is a much looked forward to event on our family calendar and if you missed out on seeing it make sure you bring your family next year.

The day involved worshipping God in the form of singing, hearing from 3 speakers on different topics, and a Q and A session at the end. The day was topped off with a sausage sizzle!

John Dickson, a Christian historian and media presenter, was the first of the three speakers. He spoke about how historically trustworthy the bible is, and the evidence for the life of Jesus, particularly through the gospels. The next speaker, Mike Hands, was a pastor from the Gold Coast who tackled the issue of boredom in church services. He explained the difference between a church, which has taken on a meaning of a physical building of worship, vs an ekklesia, a word meaning “called out people.” He challenged us to live out our faith outside the church within our everyday lives, and particularly to find darkness where it exists and be a light within that darkness. The third speaker, Melissa Lipsett, the CEO of Bible Society Australia, spoke about the issue of a self involved faith. She challenged us to see the needs of others within our society and serve accordingly.

Overall the masterclass was a great experience for everyone involved. It was great to see such a large number of students our age wanting to learn more about God and his word, as we did also. One of the most encouraging things was to be surrounded by hundreds of strangers, all there for the same purpose, singing praises to our amazing God.

Our senior team played some very competitive schools. The girls lifted their game, and combined skill, tactic and team work, to secure 3rd place in their pool. Well done girls. We were very proud of your tenacity, flexibility and sportsmanship.

Our Junior team won all of their pool games, playing very skilfully, and proceeded to the quarter finals. Here we encountered a very strong team from Greenpoint Christian School. The girls didn’t give up and did their best but were unable to defeat Greenpoint. These girls worked really well as a team and most of the time all players touched the ball as they worked their way down court. We particularly appreciated the way the girls encouraged one another throughout the day.

A special congratulations to Isabel Sinclair, Lara Davis and Bailey Bowran who took out the age champion for their respective ages. Monique Oste also deserves a mention after breaking the 16-year girls high jump record with a jump of 1.55m.

Both the A team and B team had difficult draws and while the results didn’t go in our favour the teams could not have played with more character and heart. We prayed together at the start of the day for the wisdom to emulate Christ on the soccer field and every member of both teams did so, showing sportsmanship and control in everything they did.

The senior primary had both an A and B team playing in the competition as well. The B team played very capably on the day. They worked tirelessly together on the day to defend goals and score them as well. They won each of their games convincingly on the day and came first place for the Senior B competition! The Senior A team had to work hard for their place as overall winners on the day, with a loss, draw and win and a final that went right down to penalty shots. 

The next week, the A team then headed to Penrith for the Metropolitan State Cup. They once again knitted well together as a team and supported each other well on the field and off. After coming first in our pool, they then faced a determined Belmont CS in the quarter final. After a repeat of the previous weeks grand final-going into extra time and penalty shoot out, they won to face Oxford Falls in a nail biting semi final. After backing up a tough quarter final, they had a quick turn around to play their next game. In the end we went down 1-0. What a day!!

Stand outs were many: the excited and enthusiastic parent and friends cheer squad, the excellent standard of skills displayed by individuals who blended them capably to work as a team on the day, the great sportsmanship displayed by both the teams on both the days toward the referees, the other teams and each other, and my personal highlight, praying with the team before the games.

Thank you to everyone who lent a hand on the day in whatever capacity. It was greatly appreciated!

The girls team started the day strongly, winning their first two games against Oran Park and Inaburra. A close game against Regents Park followed and saw the girls defeated 16 - 14. Unfortunately, another loss later in the day resulted in the girls just missing out on the semi final. They placed 3rd in their pool, which was a fantastic achievement. Well done girls!

The boys team displayed exceptional skills and teamwork throughout the entire day and qualified for the semi finals without losing a game; first in their pool!

They then came up against William Carey in the semi finals. They gave their all but unfortunately went down 30 - 19. The boys team placed 3rd overall (out of 10 teams). All players should be very proud of this achievement.

Congratulations to both teams on their excellent results and sportsmanship on the day.

But it also has its challenges. Differences have the built-in capability of dividing us and causing hurt and dissension. The apostle Paul himself experienced this when he and Barnabas had a difference of opinion about John Mark’s usefulness to their ongoing ministry (Acts 15:36-40).

We can all become good ‘judges’ of other people’s effectiveness in ministry, critical of how they use their time, money and other resources, and ‘experts’ at assessing the fruit borne by their efforts. Whenever I reflect on what Jesus meant when he said, “But many who are first will be last, and the last first.” (Mark 10:31) it makes me think that in God’s ‘Big Picture’, it may be that things we write off as ineffective could turn out to be the things that are most fruitful in Kingdom work. This leads me to always try to be encouraging of the efforts of other Christians and to avoid being critical of them.

While critical ‘correction’ can be very helpful in our spiritual development, in can also be very demoralising and de-energising. I am eternally grateful to the many people the Lord used in my early days as a Christian to offer words of encouragement (obviously backed up by persistent prayer!) as I grew in faith by ‘trial and (much) error’.

I like what Paul wrote to the fledgling Christians in Rome as he noticed a critical spirit among them with regard to some of the ‘disputable’ points of Christian living: “Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls. And he will stand, for the Lord is able to make him stand.” (Romans 14:4). Constructive criticism is good - but we need to be very conscious of just how we might be ‘coming across’ when we are offering it. If it causes someone who has been really trying hard to ‘do the right thing’ to give up and think ‘What’s the use’, then it has defeated its purpose.

Because my ‘default’ position is to be critical, I want to work hard at looking for every opportunity to see the positive aspects of what others are doing, and to encourage them in every possible way - like thanking them, telling them that I have noticed their efforts, highlighting their special gifts and abilities and the contribution they are making to the ‘Big Picture’ in which we are all different, and praying regularly for them.
