The dads began the day with a delicious BBQ breakfast. Together with their children, they had a wonderful time playing, creating robots out of recycled materials and having races.

Wisely, Gillespie acknowledges that every family will have different ideas about where to set limits in relation to the use of devices; however, he is emphatic that all rules set by parents must have consequences which are always followed through and also have an upside. For example, parents might say to their 14-year-old daughter that she can use technology for non-school-related purposes e.g. social media for no more than 3 hours per week, but never after 8:30 PM. Breaching this requirement would result in the technology being confiscated for 7 days. The girl's parents would let her know that if she complies with this standard for 2 years, then they will increase the amount she is allowed to use social media to 5 hours per week and until 9:30 PM each night. While I don't necessarily suggest that parents adopt this specific example, I very much support the concept of:

•  boundaries being set on technology use.
• consequences for breaching boundaries which parents never relent on, no matter how angry or upset the child might become. 
• an upside or incentive when teenagers honestly operate within the boundaries for a period of time. 

Gillespie’s “categories of teenage punishment”, which I prefer to call consequences for breaching reasonable boundaries, are instructive. He talks about the all-time favourite for parents – loss of privileges such as confiscating devices or being grounded. While supporting this consequence for breaching boundaries on technology use, he makes the important point that loss of privileges should only happen for a few days rather than weeks, the reason being that lost privileges need to be religiously enforced. The longer the loss of privilege, the greater the risk that it will not be effectively enforced. The other 3 consequences are:

• Additional responsibilities e.g. cleaning the bathroom for the next 3 weeks. This is an active consequence that contributes to the needs of others.
• Restitution e.g. A teenage boy wastes 2 hours of his mother’s time after deliberately breaching technology boundaries. Therefore the boy is expected to give 2 hours of his time doing something that will support his mother.
• Natural consequences e.g. a teenager perpetually runs late because she keeps fussing around on technology. Her mum allows her to run late for netball training which results in her coach dropping her from the team for a big game the following Saturday.

I trust that members of our school community are appreciating this series of newsletter articles on technology use. In a fortnight's time I will share some more specific advice Gillespie gives to parents in relation to technology and some thoughts of my own on how to reduce the negative impact of excessive use of technology on teenagers.

Strength Based Approach to Social and Emotional Learning

A big part of what our P-6 teachers do each day is to help children grow in their understanding of who they are and how to relate positively and respectfully towards others. During the past few weeks, teachers have spent time in our staff meetings sharing ideas and tips of how we help students with self-awareness, self-management, social awareness and social skills. When working with children to help them resolve conflict or solve problems we use a strength based approach. We spend time working out ways that we can improve situations and help each child think about what they can do to make things better.

During the past 3 weeks, students have been reflecting on their strengths by completing the phrases found on the inside of the Resilience Doughnut…I Am, I Have, I Can. Parents may also like to take this opportunity to encourage their children in similar ways. Knowing our strengths is an important part of understanding how God has made us and then reflect on how we can use these strengths to benefit others.

The characters I took to Menai were only a fraction of the 112 Infants and Primary children involved. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to perform a selection of songs. Students also performed for the school at assembly this week. Both performances went extremely well and the cast were encouraged by the response of the audience at both venues.

Students needed to handle steep ascents and descents, climbing over  2500m and carrying 15 plus kilograms of everything they needed to survive. This was both a physical and mental challenge with students having to navigate the entire length of the hike. 

Well done to all who participated and we look in anticipation to the Blue Mountains where we will the tackle the famous Six-Foot Track for the Qualifying Journey.

Firstly, Years 10 and 11 saw Rainbow’s End at the Eternity Playhouse in Darlinghurst. This play is written by Jane Harrison, a descendant of the Muruwari people from NSW. In it we see the Dear family in the 1950s as they struggle for decent housing, meaningful education and jobs, and community acceptance. Our students found the experience to be an engaging and educational introduction into indigenous performance, a theatrical form we’ll be exploring next term. 

This week our Year 9 students were able to see Lord of the Flies produced on stage in the Roslyn Packer Theatre. It was an innovative production that used lighting within the set design in integral way, which made for an engaging piece that literally flexed around and above the actors. We had a robust discussion in class afterwards about the director’s decisions and it will remain an important example of how design can become its own character in a play. 

Poor Year 12 were the only Drama class not to see a play this term - they will be performing their HSC pieces on Tuesday for their exam so they would greatly appreciate your prayers.

Year 11 started their day at the Chinese Garden of Friendship where they saw symbols and representations of Chinese culture in beautifully manicured gardens. The visit to the Garden reinforced many of the aspects of Chinese culture that Year 11 have learnt in class.

After a short morning tea at Darling Harbour they made their way to Dixon Street in Chinatown. Year 11 had the opportunity to observe the different types of Chinese background businesses that exist in Dixon Street, and the products that they offer. After a tasty Chinese lunch in some of the restaurants upstairs from Dixon Street, students had an opportunity to purchase some delightful drinks and sweets from various shops.

Year 11 Society and Culture had a wonderful day examining Chinese culture in the City and returned with a greater awareness and understanding of this ancient culture.

Students learnt about traditional and contemporary methods of cooking and uses of native bush foods by Aboriginal people. They were also informed about how traditional bush foods are incorporated into contemporary, modern cuisines.

The Grounds at Alexandria was an opportunity for students to see how marketing and knowing consumer desires grows a business.

A good and competitive day was had by all teams with some great attacking and defensive plays.

The Open Girls won their grand final game 6-1 against Inaburra, with Georgia Mullins and Isabella Fanous starring to contribute to the win. This is the fifth consecutive year that the Open Girls have won the CSSA State Oztag Gala Day, an outstanding achievement. The Under 15 Boys also won their grand final game 5-1 against Inaburra, with Saul Robinson and Jack Martin scoring some classy tries. 

The day would not have been possible without the support and commitment of Mrs Wilson, Mrs Wilcockson, Mr Askew and Mr Chen. The teachers coached and supported their respective team throughout the day with upmost enthusiasm, allowing their teams to compete to the best of their ability.

Well done to all Shire Christian students who competed in this day.

The team played with great heart all day, with some good wins and some close losses in the preliminary games, led by the more experienced players Zane, Nikora and Malakai, who continually hit the ball up hard and tackled tirelessly. Bailey was always a danger out wide, and proved a handful for the opposition defence on many occasions.

For many of the boys, it was their first experience of Rugby League competition and they rose to the challenge, contributing to what was in the end a great day.

Once again, I was challenged and admonished for my ‘inbuilt’ underestimation of the power of God’s Word in its ‘simplicity’ to lead people to Christ and to find new life in him. We heard of a man who had, all his life, ridiculed the whole idea of there being a God who had revealed himself in a person (Christ) and in a book (the Bible), and who had brought up his children to have the same dismissive attitude. One of his sons came home from school one day to find his parents sitting on the front verandah, with his sceptical father in tears! The father explained to the boy how he had accepted Jesus as his Saviour, and this strange idea so surprised and distressed the son that he went to his room and picked up the Gideon Bible he had been given in Year 7, a few years before. He started to read in the back of this little red book about how to discover in it the way of salvation. The son testified that the change he observed in his father was as undeniable as it was inexplicable, and he too gave his life to Jesus as a result of what he read in his Bible.

Amazing as this story is, it is entirely consistent with what God had revealed to the prophet Isaiah: “As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:10-11).

I am so encouraged by, and thank God for, the dedication, commitment and perseverance of the Gideons. I always appreciated their visits to our school and their distribution of the red pocket-sized ‘New Testament and Psalms’ to the Year 7 students. I still pray that these will not just be ‘red’, but will be ‘read’, and that the Holy Spirit will carry through in many young lives what he promised through Isaiah - if not immediately, at least eventually!

Our Pastor added his own testimony to the presentation at our Church, telling of how the ‘Gideon Bible’ he had received at school had been the first Bible he had ever had, and of how he had recently visited an old, non-Christian school friend and noticed the little red ‘Gideon Bible’ sitting in a prominent position on his friend’s bookshelf - waiting to be read?

Satan obviously knows all these things, and so the Gideons are experiencing strong world-wide opposition to their distribution program in schools, universities, hotels, etc. I hope we are praying hard that this opposition will be frustrated and that we will continue to see this ministry expand and be effective in bringing people to faith in Christ. I am reminded of the encouragement Paul gave to young Timothy: “Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained. Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.” (2 Timothy 2:8-10)

Readers and Writers assist students in accessing their examinations and overcoming the learning barriers which make the HSC difficult. We are in need of both a reader and writer to support two students in the upcoming HSC examinations across October and November. It would be preferable to have consistency as much as possible across the dates below for either the reader or writer:

What qualities should a reader/writer have?

• Ability to communicate clearly in English with a sufficient literacy level
• Understanding of the subject(s) being examined
• Clear, legible handwriting (if writing for the student)
• Willingness to spend time practising with the student
• Patience and sensitivity
• Understanding of the need to maintain confidentiality and an ability to do so

Who cannot act as a reader and/or writer?

• A relative or friend of the student
• A currently employed teacher or private tutor
• A non-teaching employee at the students school (eg a teacher’s aide, school secretary, lab technician)
• Anyone who recently taught the student
