Children: 'darling little dodgem cars'

Mr Brett Hartley

In my last newsletter article I wrote about the risks and dangers for teenagers in using computer devices, based on the book Teen Brain by David Gillespie. Gillespie likens young children to “darling little dodgem cars” who, once they hit puberty turn into a “Formula One racing car with dodgy brakes”. He went on to say that teenage boys also have a nitro booster and a hair-trigger accelerator. Gillespie continues the metaphor by likening teenagers to cars going around a racing track that is littered with distracting and addictive flashing billboards. He suggests that parents and teachers are left to try and prevent the teenage car from harm by either slowing down or somehow ignoring the billboards. Gillespie contends that technology is one of the most addictive and dangerous flashing billboards. While this illustration might be a little over dramatised and not true of all teenagers I think that Gillespie does have a point. He goes on to be quite critical of many parents, whom he contends allow addictive behaviours with technology to have flexible and compromising boundaries, often to the detriment of the teenager.

With considerable sadness, I write to announce that Mrs Catherine McGovern will be retiring at the end of the year. Catherine has invested countless hours into developing English programs, supporting her team in a variety of ways, ensuring that English students receive helpful feedback and accurate marking on the tasks they produce and has been wise, compassionate and thorough in caring for the current Year 10 cohort.

Sugary treats, science and shoeboxes

What do Cru, Science Week and Operation Christmas Child have in common? We have a very exciting and special Cru event coming up in Week 7.

Come and hear from Dr Van Holst as he speaks of how God has revealed himself through nature. He will challenge the assumption that being a scientist precludes Christian faith. Instead, by studying God's creation, we can see his Glory.

During lunchtime, Krispy Kreme Donuts will be sold for $2 each. The proceeds for this will be used to pay for the postage for the shoeboxes packed by our school students and to support Cru.

The shoeboxes will be picked up on Monday 9 September. If you would still like to bring in a shoebox please do so by Friday 6 September.

For prayer and praise

“May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us eternal encouragement and good hope by grace, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good work and word.”  2 Thessalonians 2:16-17

  • Pray for God’s encouragement, hope, grace and strength to live out our Christian walk according to His word and will.
  • Pray for the HSC students as they continue to study and prepare for their HSC exams and major works.
  • Pray for safety and enjoyment for the many students participating in school excursions over the next two weeks.
  • Continue to pray for the staff and students involved in the school musical, Madagascar.
  • Thank God for the many positive and encouraging friendships in the school playgrounds and classrooms.

The latest from careers

On Monday Year 10 completed the moving and insightful MyStrengths program. Students were able to identify their strengths, sharing honestly and genuinely in small groups, discussing how individual strengths impact on their own lives and the lives of those around them. It was an incredibly positive day and Year 10 were amazing as they encouraged one another, celebrated their differences and gained a deeper understanding of who they are. The MyStrengths program equips Year 10 for their studies, the HSC and aims to build confidence across every area of life.
