Each week the Junior School has one focus that we all explore. This term we have been sailing the 7C’s! Next week is Curiosity, then Critical Thinking, concluding with ‘Be Thankful.’ One research proven strategy for these challenging times is to focus on gratitude, to think outside of ourselves and to thank someone else for what they are doing. This is also a biblical principle. During the final week of this term we will be reflecting on being thankful to God for his provision, as well as being thankful for what we’ve learnt and the people in our lives.

As I walk around the playground it’s great to see community in action, and how it feels like family. There are often older children playing or helping our younger ones to skip, play with a ball, caring for those who seem lonely or upset, and sharing stories or laughing together. It’s rewarding to see how the events we hold and the teaching we bring encourages our children to interact positively and care for one another.

But the show must go on, as they say, and the Year 12 students embraced the changed format without hesitation. The performances were streamed live from the school hall to the lounge rooms of many parents and members of the school community. Over 1000 people have viewed the online concert at the time of writing.

Head of Music Mr David Humphreys said that he was blown away at the quality of each student in this year’s HSC class and their performances on the livestream did not disappoint.

“It is a testament to the passion and dedication that they have shown throughout the last four years that they have been together. It has been a blessing to have worked with them over this time. I’ve been impressed by how they have spurred each other on to grow in the gifts that God has given them,” said Mr Humphreys.

The HSC music class now turns its attention to the HSC practical examinations next week, where students will perform their pieces for a panel of independent examiners.

I’m always a little anxious when organising a new activity. Will it work? Will they stay safe? Will they learn something new? Will the students enjoy it?

It wasn’t long before my fears were allayed. As soon as the first hooter went off to indicate the start of round 1, I heard loud cheers and shrieks of laughter at each of the 8 playing fields. As the day progressed and after chatting to many excited children, even those who had not won a game could still smile and enjoy themselves, and I could breathe a sigh of relief!

Thank you to all of the wonderful staff who were so willing to help referee and umpire. Thank you also to my Year 9 helpers who did an incredible job looking after the teams and umpiring the modified netball games. And thank you to Kerrie Baker for her amazing preparation and collation of results. Without everyone’s enthusiasm and encouragement the day would not have run so smoothly.

Although this was intended as a one off solution to the COVID-19 restrictions, many students were talking about “when we do this next year”. I’m not sure yet that it will be an annual event, but I’m glad they enjoyed it enough to want to do it again!

We saw lots of cars, trucks, a double decker bus, golf buggies, remote control aeroplanes, a surf ski, motor boat and at the Jannali overpass we saw at least three trains. The drivers totted their horn at us and we waved!

Thank you to Mr Wilson and Mr Carter for being our friendly bus drivers for the day.

After a special morning tea of fruit and a bicycle cookie we had Bike Day!

We practiced our bike and scooter skills around a special track at school that was designed by Mr Donnelly. Thank you.

It was so much fun riding around at school. We were very careful to obey the road rules and stay safe. Sometimes there was even a traffic jam at the traffic lights! (Thank you to Emily and Mrs Wasson for the donation of the traffic lights).

I love the words of William Walsham How’s hymn: “O Word of God incarnate, O wisdom from on high, O truth unchanged, unchanging, O light of our dark sky, we praise thee for the radiance that from the hallowed page, a lantern to our footsteps, shines on from age to age. It floateth like a banner before God’s host unfurled, it shineth like a beacon above the darkling world; it is the chart and compass that, o’er life’s surging sea, ’mid mists and rocks and quicksands, still guides, O Christ, to thee.” 

And, as the Kellers remind me, the only way our society will know about this important, life-saving ‘chart and compass’, is by the faithful, honest, unhypocritical, uncompromising witness of Christians who know their Saviour personally, and who are committed to serving him with a holy (‘other-worldly’) life. God’s revealed truth in his Word is ‘absolute’ truth, and our society no longer believes that ‘absolute’ truth is possible - and, of this, it is ‘absolutely’ sure and convinced. The only thing that will break through this barrier is God’s Holy Spirit using the lives of people who make its absolute truth a visible reality before its very eyes on a daily basis. 

The Apostles, Peter and Paul, put it like this: “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behaviour in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” (1 Peter 3:15-16), and “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!"

All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

This is why Mr How concluded his hymn with the earnest prayer: “O make thy Church, dear Saviour, a lamp of purest gold, to bear before the nations thy true light, as of old. O teach thy wandering pilgrims by this their path to trace till, clouds and darkness ended, they see thee face to face.” May we, as individuals, and as a school community, play a significant role in what the Holy Spirit uses to bring spiritual life to our society, as we wait in expectant hope for the time when the Lord Jesus Christ will Return to ‘make all things new.’

UNSW Engineering - Flexible First Year (Honours)

A key part of UNSW’s commitment to help students grow into their career, the Flexible First Year degree is for those who know they want to be an engineer, but have yet to work out which direction to take. It allows you to explore a number of areas before deciding upon your final specialisation. The first year of engineering study has a core of common subjects, plus a wide choice of electives. It allows you to study a number of areas that appeal to you without making a formal commitment to a specific engineering degree. Flexible First Year students need to enrol in five core subjects. You are then encouraged to select electives from the options listed, focusing on those required in the degree you are considering for future years. The winner of the Youth for Peace Award will receive:
