An Active Start to Term 2

An Active Start to Term 2

The nineteen school days of Term 2 thus far have seen a flurry of activity, including six secondary camps, three Mother's Day events, four parent-teacher evenings, three days of school photos, and the junior school cross-country, not to mention a multitude of co-curricular activities in debating, music, robotics, sport and more.

It has been a busy but encouraging start to the term, showcasing the breadth of opportunities and the community contribution that characterise life at the school. A big thank you to our staff during this active time on our calendar.

Compass Developments

Compass Developments

Over recent months, we have continued embedding our new student information platform, Compass, into the daily life of the school. As staff, students, and families become increasingly familiar with the system, we are seeing growing benefits in communication, organisation, attendance processes, assessment information, and the overall coordination of teaching and learning.

In this newsletter, Mr Collins highlights some of Compass’s features relating to assessment tasks and results, while Mrs Robinson outlines how the integration of Compass with our learning framework is reshaping the format and content of our academic reports, beginning with Year 12.

Together, these changes are strengthening how we connect with students and families in supporting their learning.

Reviewing Reports

Reviewing Reports

Next week, the first of our new Compass Reports will be made available to Year 12 parents and students. Staff have made significant shifts in their teaching, assessing and reporting practices. A tremendous thank you to Mr Collins, Mr Carter (and previously Mr Gallagher), superbly supported by our IT department, led by Mr Hibbard, for making this possible.

What will you notice?

Syllabus outcomes are listed on these reports. This is a significant change and allows a deeper understanding of how assessment tasks contribute to successful achievement and progress within a course (subject).

Effort is now aligned from K-12, using the three descriptors “Excellent”, “Satisfactory” and “Inconsistent”. This is designed as a check-in point of reflection for students.

The Learning for Life Domains are now included and written in student and parent friendly language. They replace the previous “Attitude and Approach to Learning” section. As the Learning for Life framework underpins all of our learning at Shire, this section allows students to see where they are on a continuum of “Beginning”, “Emerging”, “Establishing”, “Accomplishing” and “Extending” within a course.

Finally, the semester grade itself isn’t just the result of the assessment tasks, but a combination of assessment tasks, class work, home learning (homework) and teacher observations of students’ learning.

Mother's Day, 'Be of the Week' and Uniform Policy

Mother's Day, 'Be of the Week' and Uniform Policy

A little playful music, heartfelt handwritten messages, shared moments in classrooms, laughter, handmade gifts, and a special assembly centred on celebrating and encouraging our mothers and mother figures through Biblical truth, created a wonderful opportunity to honour the incredible women in our lives. It was so encouraging to see so many mothers able to join us for this special occasion, as well as enjoy a time of coffee, connection and of course, muffins together.

Thank you to all the mums and mother figures within our learning community for the love, care and faithfulness you so generously pour into the lives of our children.

This week, our “Be of the Week” focus, Be Respectful, has centred on our Rainbow Reminder to “Respect People and Property.” This has provided meaningful opportunities for students to reflect on what it means to live in submission to Christ as our King and to respond to His call to “serve one another humbly in love” (Gal 3:15). As part of our learning framework, students are also encouraged to consider how respect is demonstrated within the learning environment. Listening thoughtfully to differing opinions, giving and receiving feedback graciously, and celebrating one another’s differences as image bearers of our great God.

Thank you for your continued support of our school uniform policy as we transition into winter uniform this term. Students wearing long pants are expected to have their shirts tucked in at all times, including when arriving at and leaving school. We greatly appreciate your partnership in ensuring your child leaves home dressed correctly. Thank you also to the many students who have shown wonderful growth in demonstrating independence and respect through the way they wear their uniform.

Grandparents Days

Grandparents Days

We are pleased to inform you that we are hosting our grandparents again this year.

This year, we have made the decision to split Grandparents and Special Friends Day over two days to help care for the safety and comfort of our elderly grandparents, while also allowing them to enjoy a wonderful experience on site with their grandchildren.

These dates will be Tuesday 26 May and Wednesday 27 May.

For our Kindergarten to Year 6 students, A-K families will attend on Tuesday 26 May starting at 10.20am in the classrooms and the L-Z families will attend on Wednesday 27 May starting at 10.20am in the classrooms. Families with a child in Prep will receive a separate email about their grandparents being involved also.

This has been such a great success in the past, with so many grandparents and special friends able to join us and when lots of precious memories were made.

We will have people to meet and greet, provide maps and guidance about where to go but it will greatly assist us and your child’s grandparent or special friend, if you would please write down your child’s name and class . You will see a map with the classrooms marked on the back of the flyer we will send home which might be helpful to mark.

If your child’s grandparent/special friend requires you to assist them for the morning, if at all possible, would you please make alternate arrangements for any younger siblings who are under school age to be looked after at home. If you do need to bring a baby/preschooler with you, please make sure they are strictly supervised at all times, as there will be over one hundred senior people moving around and accessing/carrying hot drinks.

There is currently very limited parking for the less mobile, however, we will have staff in the carpark area to help guide you if you are dropping someone off. If that is the case, can you please use the drop and kiss zone and then move your car as soon as possible if you need to park it.

Thank you in advance for your assistance in making this an enjoyable experience for everyone.

‘For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.’ Psalm 100:5

Learning Tasks and Results

Learning Tasks and Results

Over the last six months our school community has adopted Compass as our key communication system between the school, parents and students. We have all been learning how to adjust to a new way of doing things. One of the key features of SEQTA (our old system) was the ability to see student’s results from assessment tasks. This feature still exists in Compass, but the process is a little different from the past.

At this stage, when a teacher posts results from a task, there is no notification given to tell you it is released. I encourage parents and students to pick a time once a week to have a look at the results in the Tasks section. We are working with Compass to find a way of notifying you of new results without flooding your email. If a result is missing, this probably just reflects that a teacher is still mastering the process of releasing the results. In the first instance I would encourage you to get your child to gently prompt the teacher that they cannot see the results.

To access current and upcoming learning tasks and results, open the Compass app and tap on Learning Task in the favourites pane (yours may be in a slightly different position than the image below). You will then be prompted to select which child you would like to view tasks for.

Next, tap on the subject you would like to view tasks for. In the example image below is the subject 11BST Business Studies Yr11 and if selected it will then expand to show two assessment tasks for that subject.

You can then tap into any of the assessment tasks set for that subject. This allows you to see more information about it such as its due date (circled below) and, if results have been released, you can tap on the feedback tab.

Ensembles perform for community at Menai

Ensembles perform for community at Menai

Last week, our school Music Ensembles proudly presented their first public performance of the year at the 3Bridges Community Centre for a special Mother’s Day Concert. The morning was a wonderful celebration of music and community spirit, with approximately 40 to 50 audience members being entertained by our talented students.

The concert featured performances from the Junior Concert Band, Senior Concert Band, Senior Percussion Ensemble, and Senior String Ensemble. Around 40 student musicians took part in the event, showcasing musical excellence that has been achieved through hours of practice throughout Term 1 and 2.

Students demonstrated outstanding collaborative skills as they worked together to pack and unpack equipment from the truck, prepare the performance space and support one another. Their professionalism and positive attitude contributed greatly to the success of the event.

Audience members were treated to an enjoyable and diverse program of music, with each ensemble performing confidently and enthusiastically. For the students, this concert marked their first public performance of the year, making the occasion an especially significant and exciting milestone.

Congratulations to all students involved for representing Shire Christian School so positively and for delivering such an entertaining performance. Thank you also to the community members who supported the event by attending, and the 3Bridges staff who hosted our students so well.

Girls secure win as Bill Turner Cup campaign continues, narrow loss for boys

Girls secure win as Bill Turner Cup campaign continues, narrow loss for boys

Shire Christian School teams recorded mixed but encouraging results in the latest round of the Bill Turner Cup, with both the girls and boys demonstrating skill and teamwork on the field.

Our girls team secured a hard‑fought 2–1 victory against Engadine High School, continuing their Bill Turner Cup campaign.

They will now face The Jannali High School in late May as they progress through the competition.

The boys team were involved in a tightly contested match, going down 3–2 to Caringbah High School. Despite the narrow loss, the team showed resilience and commitment throughout the game, reflecting positive development and strong teamwork.

Both teams will also compete in the CSSA Zone event in early June, providing further opportunities to represent Shire Christian School with pride, sportsmanship and perseverance.

Personal bests for Shire Christian swimmers at NSWCIS Championships

Personal bests for Shire Christian swimmers at NSWCIS Championships

Shire Christian School was well represented at the recent NSWCIS Swimming Championships, with Dylan, Harper, James, Hollie and Jade competing on behalf of both our school and NSW CSSA at Sydney Olympic Park.

Across the championships, several students recorded season’s best times and new personal bests, a sensational outcome at this level of competition and a reflection of their hard work, preparation and commitment to improvement.

It is always encouraging to see students rise to the challenge on the state stage. I was particularly pleased with the way each student conducted themselves throughout the meet, demonstrating focus and sportsmanship in every race.

I would also like to give special recognition to our Year 12 students, Hollie and Jade. Over many years, they have consistently represented Shire Christian School with excellence and integrity. They have been outstanding ambassadors for our school, and I sincerely thank them for the way they have represented Shire Christian in swimming year after year.

Congratulations to all five students on their achievements and for representing our school with pride.

Encouraging growth on display at CSSA State Volleyball

Encouraging growth on display at CSSA State Volleyball

Shire Christian School sent two teams, the 15s girls and Open girls, to compete at the CSSA State Volleyball event in the Hawkesbury, with both teams representing the school with commitment and enthusiasm.

With more than 40 students signing up and trialling for selection, it was encouraging to see the growing interest in volleyball across the school. Mrs Henderson was thrilled to observe the noticeable improvement in both participation and skill level among our volleyballers over the past year.

On the day, both teams performed admirably, demonstrating strong teamwork, developing game awareness and a positive competitive spirit throughout their matches. While we did not walk away with the championship title, the performances reflected genuine progress and a solid foundation for future development.

I am very confident that we will continue to see growth in volleyball at Shire Christian School in the coming years as students build on these experiences and continue to develop their skills.

Alexi heads to the Australian Little League Championships in June

Alexi heads to the Australian Little League Championships in June

We are proud to recognise one of our students, Alexi, who has been making outstanding progress in baseball outside of school. Through dedication, perseverance and a genuine passion for the sport, he has continued to develop his skills and make a strong impression on the field.

His hard work has recently paid off, with his team qualifying for the Australian Little League Championships at Blacktown in June. Competing at this level is a significant achievement and reflects both his individual commitment and the strength of his team.

Alexi started playing baseball when he was 4 years old. He is so excited for the opportunity to compete at the Nationals with his team. They hope to win the tournament and head to the USA to compete in the Little League World Series in August.

We congratulate Alexi on this exciting milestone and wish him and his team the very best as they prepare to compete at the national level.

What To Do When Your Child is in Serious Trouble

Navigating those moments when a child or young person faces serious trouble is a challenge for even the most experienced parents. To support you through these times, we are pleased to share a practical guide by Rowena Thomas, the long-standing facilitator of our annual ‘Amazing Me’ program.

Rowena has been a trusted voice in our community for years, guiding students and parents through the complexities of puberty and transition, with her trademark joy and encouragement. We hope this article serves as a valuable resource as we continue to partner with you in supporting the wellbeing and growth of the young people in our care.

The Road to ‘Somewhere’

The Road to ‘Somewhere’

This year I have set myself the discipline of reading each day one of the eight-verse sections of Psalm 119, in addition to my ordinary devotional reading. This means I will cover the whole Psalm every 22 days, or 16 and a bit times in the year (knowing me and my lack of discipline, perhaps only 15 times).

I am using Eugene Petersen’s ‘The Message’ for this purpose because I find his honest, down-to-earth expression very refreshing and reflective of the present challenges of my own life.

Last week I was reading (in the section where each verse starts with the Hebrew letter, Daleth [D]) these words:

“I’m feeling terrible – I couldn’t feel worse! Get me on my feet again. You promised, remember? When I told my story, you responded; train me well in your deep wisdom. Help me understand these things inside and out so I can ponder your miracle wonders. My sad life’s dilapidated, a falling down barn; build me up again by your Word. Barricade the road that goes Nowhere; grace me with your clear revelation.  I choose the true road to Somewhere, I post your road signs at every curve and corner. I grasp and cling to whatever you tell me; LORD, don’t let me down!  I’ll run the course you lay out for me if you’ll just show me how.”

At 85, the ‘dilapidated, falling down barn’ is an apt description of my ‘earthly tent’, and I feel that with the world situation in general the way it is, and the direction in which our own culture is heading at a rate of knots, I’m not Robinson Crusoe as I read and apply these words! It seems that many people in our society today, especially young people, can identify with being on the ‘road that goes Nowhere’, and are in real need of ‘barricades’ to guard them from it.

Almost every one of the 176 verses in the Psalm uses a Hebrew word that refers to God’s written revealed truth, and the Psalmist, as in Psalm 1, recognises the necessity of God’s Word to keep him in on the ‘true road to Somewhere’. Our culture is doing its best to prevent us from openly declaring the Plan of this Road. How thankful we can be that Shire Christian School provides our children with an eduction that in every aspect is founded on God’s Word, a ‘Firm Foundation’ and that it is in the hands of a dedicated staff that is committed to keeping it so.  This is why I find going to the Association meetings so encouraging as I see my prayers being answered. Hope to see many of you at the AGM next Thursday.

Dr Justin Coulson Live Webinar: Building Strong Young Men From The Inside Out - Wednesday 17 June 7pm

Dr Justin Coulson Live Webinar: Building Strong Young Men From The Inside Out - Wednesday 17 June 7pm

In this webinar, Justin reveals what decades of research suggests: when boys get what they actually need, they thrive. Not through force or fixing, but through connection, meaningful challenge, and someone who refuses to give up on them.

This presentation hands you the ‘Playbook’. It cuts through the noise with practical, research-backed strategies for the battles you’re fighting right now. Gaming. Pornography. Self-control. Friendships. School motivation. How to discipline without destroying trust. How to stay close when he’s pushing away.

But beneath the tactics lies something more powerful: a vision of masculinity worth fighting for. Boys who help others feel safer and stronger. Who create surplus value. Who become not just good men, but the best version of themselves. Your son already has everything he needs to get there.

For prayer and praise

For prayer and praise

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall all and not faint.” Isaiah 40:28-31.
  • Thank God that He is everlasting, powerful, strength giving, loving and full of wisdom.
  • Pray that we will wait for the LORD, even when tired or weary, and that God would continue to give us strength for each day.
  • Praise God for the many talented students who have recently been involved in sporting games and co-curricular activities.
  • Pray for the Learning Support Staff as they continue to help students with learning challenges.
  • Pray for safety for staff, families and students as they travel to and from school and school excursions.
  • Continue to pray for the Year 12 students as they learn and prepare for their HSC exams later this year.
