Welcome Back
Welcome Back

Welcome back, students and families, for the final term of the year.
I don’t know if school history will refer to 2026 as “the year of the carpark”, but it was certainly encouraging to see the final portion of the slab floor being poured on Wednesday as the work progresses toward completion.
The extra staff parking means fewer cars in the streets, more space in our current carpark for parents and visitors, and more playground space at the back of the school for students, so everybody benefits.
School Uniform
School Uniform
We are finalising our uniform guidelines for 2027, incorporating the increased flexibility that an all-season uniform provides to students. We are also revising our uniform display slides to include the updated options and will share them with the community as soon as we can. As a quick summary of key changes:
- Shorts will be introduced as an option for girls in 7-12 and a skort option in K-6.
- Boys and girls may wear shorts or long pants, and either short-sleeved or long-sleeved shirts, in any term. Girls also have the option of wearing a skirt.
- The secondary boys’ tie will remain restricted to Terms 2 and 3 rather than being required year-round. A new tie will be introduced for Years 7-10 boys, however this will be phased in, starting with Year 7 only in 2027.
- K-10 girls can continue to wear the current winter tunic, and secondary girls may continue to wear the summer dress, throughout the extended transition period.
- Girls’ socks will be navy year-round from 2027.
Junior School Day Extension from 2027
Junior School Day Extension from 2027
Junior school parents were informed this week of a ten-minute extension to the K-6 school day, which will now begin at 8:30am. The earlier start will give us more time for learning and bring closer alignment with Prep and the Secondary School starting times.
Federal Bill Threatens Protections for Faith-Based Schools
Federal Bill Threatens Protections for Faith-Based Schools
Freedom for Faith recently posted an update regarding the bill introduced to parliament by federal independent MP, Allegra Spender:
Faith leaders write to the Prime Minister
Senior Christian leaders from across Australia have written to the Prime Minister, the Attorney-General and the Minister for Education about Allegra Spender’s bill.
The letter, dated 20 October 2026, warns that the bill would remove significant existing protections for faith-based schools, substantially restricting their ability to employ staff who share their faith, require staff to uphold their beliefs and standards of conduct, and maintain their distinctive religious character.
It also welcomes the reassurances the Government gave this week that its 2025 election commitments remain firmly in place: that legal protections for people of faith “will not go backwards under Labor”, and that any changes in this area must be progressed on a bipartisan basis with the Coalition. As the bill does not have bipartisan support, the signatories state that they understand it will not receive Government support.
The letter is signed by leaders of the Australian Christian Churches, the Anglican Diocese of Sydney, Australian Baptist Ministries, the Presbyterian Church of Australia, the Seventh-day Adventist Church and Freedom for Faith.
The commitments made before the 2025 election are now doing their work. They give churches and Christians a clear basis to hold the Government to its word.
I encourage parents to write to their local federal member, reminding them of the Government’s commitment to protect religious freedom and urging them to uphold the rights of faith-based schools.

Championing our Teachers
Championing our Teachers

One of the questions I often ask in an enrolment interview is, “Think of your favourite teacher or teachers. What do they do to help you to learn best?” I get a range of responses, but everyone is always able to think of a teacher who they connect with and who just “gets them”.
Next Friday, 30 October is World Teachers’ Day. The theme by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is “Shine a light on teachers”. Our teachers here at Shire make a difference every day and light the way for students to learn more about Christ and what it means to be a Christian. Teachers have the privilege of shaping not only head knowledge but also heart knowledge, in partnership with our parents.
Teaching is a little bit like witnessing a symphony – the concert is so amazing, you often don’t realise what it takes to get there. The same is true for teaching. So much time goes on “behind the scenes”, preparation, collaboration, professional learning, reviewing, assessing and prayer, that by the time teachers get to teach the actual lesson, they often make it look easy. At Shire, we have a broad range of teachers, some who are new to the profession and some who are very experienced. Our mentoring program this year has enabled collaboration and sharing of expertise and wisdom; developing wonderful relationships that foster trust and empathy. So many opportunities for teachers to build up their colleagues and champion each other.
Teaching is a profession where no two days are ever the same and there is tremendous joy in developing a positive rapport with our students. Can I encourage you to perhaps thank a teacher who has made (or is making) a difference to your child’s life? Or, if our Secondary School students are reading this, email the teacher yourself. Proverbs 16:24 tell us that, "Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body."
I’m sure if you took just a few minutes to write an email to a teacher to encourage them, it would mean so much.

HSC Examinations
HSC Examinations

Our Year 12 students commenced the HSC examinations last week. It was really pleasing to have quite a large number of students coming to school during the “holidays”. The local libraries are often overflowing at this time of year, so approximately 20 students each day opted to come to school and use our library instead.
I encourage all members of our school community to uphold these students in prayer. While naturally we would love all our students to achieve strong results, my growing prayer is that God would open the right doors for them as they move into their next phase of life.

Congratulations to Zara Couperus on being awarded a prestigious scholarship from the University of Wollongong for 2027, should she choose to study there next year.
Over the next couple of weeks many students will complete their assessment tasks for the year. I want to remind every family that there will be significant learning in classes right up until the end of the term. Information regarding our end of year picnic days will be released shortly.

Building Strength and Resilience
Building Strength and Resilience

This week, our Year 5 and 6 students took part in the 'My Strengths Resilience Program', an opportunity to reflect on who they are, what they value and the unique strengths God has given them. As our students prepare for the transition to high school, they explored their individual character strengths and identified their top five strengths, gaining a deeper understanding of what they naturally bring to their learning, relationships and everyday experiences.
The program encouraged students to consider how they can draw on these strengths when facing challenges, making decisions and navigating change. Importantly, students were reminded of the truth that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:14), and that each person is uniquely created and valued by God.
This focus on recognising strengths and building resilience has also been beautifully reflected in our recent camps. Years 4 and 5 each enjoyed two spectacular days at Anglican Youthworks' Rathane campsite, where students embraced new challenges, worked together and strengthened friendships. From problem-solving to build rafts and catapults, to manoeuvring canoes, sailing, rock climbing and fishing along the picturesque Port Hacking River, students had many opportunities to step outside their comfort zones and encourage one another. It was a privilege to visit the students and share in their laughter, camaraderie and teamwork. We praise God for these wonderful opportunities to build resilience, forge friendships and help our students discover the strengths He has given them.
Let’s celebrate our teachers - Thank you Teachers
Next Friday we will celebrate ‘World Teachers Day’, and I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our wonderful teachers. The theme this year is ‘Teacher’s light the way’, and in a Christian school, we recognise that our teachers reflect the light of Jesus, who is the light of the world, (John 8:12). They shine a light on God’s Word, and help our students explore it more deeply. As a leader, I am deeply thankful for the professional and passionate way our teachers continue to provide rich and meaningful learning opportunities for our students. Thank you teachers; Your commitment, care, and excellence make a lasting impact on the lives of our students, and for that, we are truly blessed.

From the Board Chair: New Principal appointed for 2027
From the Board Chair: New Principal appointed for 2027

On behalf of the Board, I am delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Timothy Hewitt as Principal of Shire Christian School, commencing January 2027.
The recruitment process highlighted the quality of Christian education leaders serving throughout the sector and was an endorsement of what we are doing at Shire Christian School from the engaging interviews conducted. The Board was unanimous in its decision and are looking forward to our school community getting to know Tim as he shares his passion and love for Christian education through his leadership of the school.
Tim is currently the Principal of Broughton Anglican College, a Christ-centred Prep to Year 12 school of approximately 1,500 students. He was previously the Deputy of Secondary at Covenant Christian School with over 800 students. His career has been dedicated to Christian education, serving across Christian Education National (CEN), Independent and Anglican Schools for over 20 years, from teaching to Executive positions. Tim is excited by the opportunity to build on the great legacy of 50 years of faithful Christian education at Shire Christian School. He brings with him an energy and vision to build on the firm foundation of biblical clarity, conviction, academic excellence, and furthering the school’s mission, in educating students for a life of learning, service and purpose, to the glory of God.
We are thankful to God that Tim can start the 2027 school year with us. So, with many new faces, names and places for him to get to know, I know you will warmly welcome Tim to our school community…and point that person looking a little lost to the right area in those first few weeks…it could be the Principal.
Please remain prayerful for both Shire Christian School and Broughton Anglican College during this time of transition. We look forward as a community to this new start under a new Principal but with the same purpose and “everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth, (who) does not faint or grow weary, His understanding is unsearchable.” (Isaiah 40:28)
Our hope as always is in the Living Lord to direct our paths and prosper our endeavors, as is His will, for His Glory and our good. I pray that 2027 will be the start of another exciting season in the life of Shire Christian School.
Soli Deo Gloria, To God be the Glory.
Yours faithfully

Year 7 team wins Novice OnStage Competition at RoboCup National Championships in Canberra
Year 7 team wins Novice OnStage Competition at RoboCup National Championships in Canberra

Over the October long weekend, eight talented teams from Shire Christian School travelled to Canberra to compete in the 27th annual RoboCup Junior Australia National Championships. They faced challenging competition from over 278 teams and represented more than 70 schools nationwide. The massive event drew an overall attendance of more than 2,000 people, making it an incredible platform for our young innovators to showcase their robotics, coding and collaboration skills.
Rescue Line Teams
Our six Rescue Line teams faced a gruelling schedule, navigating over 12 highly challenging courses against more than 50 teams in each division, across two intense days of competition. Competing in the Riley Rescue, Primary Line, and Secondary Line divisions, our teams delivered excellent results. While they missed out on the finals, our team's showed great perseverance, as they supported and encouraged each other, working on refining builds, code and strategies to complete the challenging courses. Special congratulations goes to our Year 6 team, “We are not Lining” (Jordan, Vivian, Wesley, and Ruby), who took home the prestigious Innovation Award, for their creative and well designed robot called , “Noobie” – a fantastic achievement!
OnStage Teams Take First Place!
The OnStage competition is a massive undertaking, requiring teams to design, build, and program robots to perform a choreographed routine to music or tell a story. Managing an impressive fleet of 9 robots per team, extensive props and costumes, our Novice and Open teams delivered near-perfect performances. They also created a very detailed poster showing their design process and took part in a rigorous 20-minute technical interview explaining their original builds and complex code.
We are thrilled to announce that our Year 7 team, The Fellowship (Annabel, Lola, and Gaia), placed first in the Novice OnStage Competition! Their creativity, teamwork and engineering growth were truly outstanding. Our Open team ( Cailtyn, Elise, Emmie, Mia), placed 4th overall in this very technical and highly competitive division.
Thank You to Our Community
These exceptional results are the product of months of tireless work. Our students dedicated countless Thursday afternoons, lunch breaks and school holiday sessions to perfect their robots and code.
We extend a huge thank you to the "Shire Cheer Squad" – the incredible families who supported the teams, traveled to Canberra and cheered loudly for all our students throughout the weekend. Your support made all the difference! We give thanks to our great God who sustained us all over the weekend and whom we seek to glorify in all we do.

“I Am Who You Say I Am": Parent Julia Hosking publishes book to help children understand their identity as who God says they are in his Word

We are delighted to celebrate the publication of I Am Who You Say I Am, a new children’s book written by one of our current school parents, Mrs Julia Hosking.
The book was inspired by a desire to help children understand their identity through the truth of God’s Word. As Julia explains, “God placed it on my heart to write a book that would help children see themselves the way God sees them.” Her hope is that children who learn a strong, biblical understanding of who they are from a young age will grow in confidence and wellbeing while being grounded in God’s truth.
Unlike many children’s affirmation books, I Am Who You Say I Am connects each affirmation with Scripture, giving “parents confidence that they are sharing a message of biblical truth with their children” explains Julia.
The book encourages children to read, repeat and memorise these truths so that God’s Word can shape the way they understand themselves. In a world where children can encounter confusing or anxiety-filled messages about identity, Julia hopes the book will give them “words of life they can hold on to” and help them “be confident in the truth of who God says they are.” The book is also designed to be enjoyed as a family. Rather than simply reading it once, the author encourages parents to return to it regularly, perhaps as part of bedtime routines, and to use the statements as starting points for meaningful conversations.
“I Am Who You Say I Am” is a beautiful resource for families wanting to encourage children to build their identity on the solid foundation of God’s Word. It would also make a thoughtful gift for family and friends, including those who may be exploring the Christian faith. If you are interested in purchasing this book, please click here. Julia would be happy to come and visit any local playgroups, preschools or church groups, so please email her directly on hosking.julia@gmail.com, for more information.

Ava shines at national dance championships
Ava shines at national dance championships

Congratulations to Year 1 student Ava Windred, who achieved outstanding results at the National Dance Championships in Adelaide during the school holidays.
Competing against talented dancers from across Australia, Ava placed 3rd in Australia in her solo performance and also achieved two 2nd-place finishes as part of her team events.
Adding to the occasion, Ava wore a beautiful new dance dress specially made in London that arrived just in time for the competition. The one-of-a-kind costume made the experience even more memorable as Ava took to the national stage.
We are delighted to celebrate this hard work, dedication and success. Well done, Ava!

Undefeated Stage 3 boys basketball team progress to state gala day

On 21 September, our Stage 3 boys and girls basketball teams had a fantastic day of competition, teamwork and fun at the South Met Basketball Zone Gala Day.
Both teams played exceptionally well and faced some strong competition throughout the day. Our girls team finished the day in 3rd place, a fantastic achievement! Our boys team remained undefeated all day and were crowned champions! This is a history-making achievement for our school, and we couldn’t be more proud of their efforts.
The boys will now compete again in November at the State Gala Day. We can’t wait to see what they can achieve!
A huge thank you to all of our students who trained hard, played with determination and supported and cheered each other on throughout the day. Thank you also to the parents who came along to support our teams, and to Mr Choi and Mr Poasa for coaching the boys team.
What an incredible achievement for our school community! Let’s go and win State!

Persistent Prayer
Persistent Prayer

I organise my prayer life using an alphabetic system of small cards (the Old People’s Information Technology), so I get to pray for friends and family on a regular basis. But there are a few people/things with special needs I pray for every day. Sometimes, I get to hear of encouraging answers to my prayers, but more often I just pray for the same things over and over with no apparent result, wondering if God even hears me, and whether it’s all worthwhile.
I was helped, and challenged, a couple of weeks ago by Spurgeon’s Evening Devotion (October 9) in ‘Morning and Evening’. So I’ll just let the great Nineteenth Century preacher be ‘Barnabas’ for this week. His verse was, “But he answered her not a word” (Matthew 15:23 - concerning a Canaanite woman whose daughter was ‘severely oppressed by a demon’).
“Genuine seekers who as yet have not obtained the blessing, my take comfort from the story before us. The Saviour did not at once bestow the blessing, even thought the woman had great faith in Him. He intended to give it, but he waited awhile. ‘He answered her not a word.’ Were not her prayers good? Never better in the world. Was not her case needy? Sorrowfully needy. Did she not feel her need sufficiently? She felt it overwhelmingly. Was she not earnest enough? She was intensely so. Had she no faith? She had such a high degree of it that even Jesus wondered, and said, ‘O woman, great is your faith.’ See then, although it is true that faith brings peace, yet it does not always bring it instantaneously. There may be certain reasons calling for the trial of faith, rather than the reward of faith. Genuine faith may be in the soul like a hidden seed, but as yet it may not have budded and blossomed into joy and peace. A painful silence from the Saviour is a grievous trial of many a seeking soul, but heavier still is the affliction of a harsh cutting reply such as this, ‘It is not meet to take the children’s bread, and cast it to dogs.’ Many find immediate delight in waiting on the Lord, but this is not the case with all. Some, like the [Philippian] jailer, are in a moment turned from darkness to light, but others are plants of slower growth. A deeper sense of sin may be given to you instead of a sense of pardon, and in such a case you will have need of patience to bear the heavy blow. Ah! poor heart, though Christ beat and bruise you, or even slay you, trust Him: though he should give you an angry word, believe in the love of his heart. Do not, I beseech you, give up seeking or trusting my Master because you have not yet obtained the conscious joy you long for. Cast yourself on Him, and perseveringly depend even where you cannot rejoicingly hope.”
As I read this, I thought of how Jesus challenges me with a parable “to the effect that [I] ought always to pray and not lose heart” a parable about how a persistent widow pleaded with an unrighteous judge who refused to help her at first, but afterward said to himself, “Though I neither fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will give her justice, so that she will not beat me down by her continual coming” - a parable Jesus concluded with the encouraging words: “And will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?” (Luke 18:1-8).
