The evening was one of the first big events to put the newly renovated hall to the test. It is safe to say that our eager expectations were far surpassed by the professional level of sound and lighting that the new equipment accomplished. It truely will revolutionise the creative options available to us our and technical teams. I’ve had many people come and tell me how good the show looked and sounded!

A huge thank you to our wonderful music teaching staff who were involved in coaching the performers and running the event - Mr David Stonestreet, Mrs Elissa Stonestreet and Mrs Bronwyn Irvine. Mrs Kerrie Baker was an invaluable support to us administratively. Our incredible tutors and ensemble directors who have worked for months in preparation for their performances. Mr Geoff Miller, Mrs Kathryn Breen and Mr Rhys Williams also were very generous in how they gave up their time to see to the details of the lighting, projection, media and promotion of the evening. Thanks also to CrossTalk Sound who once again worked along side us.

Some students particularly appreciated written notes with suggested alternative wording in their essays, while others preferred me to sit with them personally during class and explain how they could improve. Their marks improved!

Throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000’s I had sufficient time to sit down with individual Year 12 students in class and give them personalised guidance on how to improve the quality of their writing, while also getting through the course content in a reasonable timeframe. Unfortunately, over the last 15 or so years the amount of content, concepts and skills that must be covered in mandatory syllabi has increased substantially. This isn't just the case for Year 12. Syllabus documents throughout the primary school years have also become very crowded with requirements.

The unintended consequence of having so much mandated material to teach is that it squeezes out time for teachers during regular lessons to sit down and work with children practically to help them. I found that I was increasingly quarantining regular class lessons for getting through course content and asking students to see me at lunchtime or after school for additional help. While I was more than happy to give this extra time, where does this leave young Johnny in Year 7 who would much prefer to be playing soccer with his friends at lunchtime than doing school work in a classroom with a teacher? The danger for Johnny is that he is left behind when the teacher is obliged to plough ahead to complete all of the mandatory syllabus requirements within the required timeframe.

The recent major review of the NSW curriculum revealed the depths of teacher’s concerns in this regard. The interim report written following the review captured teachers concerns: They commonly described being under time pressure to cover large numbers of syllabus ‘dot-points’. As a result, they experience difficulty in slowing down teaching and re-teaching to ensure students have learnt; they have limited time to teach core ideas in depth, including by providing opportunities for students to apply their learning in a range of contexts; and they often have insufficient time to build skills in knowledge application through student projects and problem-based activities. The crowded nature of many syllabuses, particularly in primary schools, but throughout the years of school, was described as encouraging superficial coverage of material rather than teaching for understanding, exploring relevance and meaning, and providing opportunities for students to transfer and apply their learning. I welcome the interim reports finding that the curriculum in NSW has become overcrowded to the extent that at least some students have been disadvantaged. Reducing the volume of mandatory requirements in syllabus documents will help our dedicated teachers to make intuitive judgements on the needs of individuals and groups of students in their class. It will better enable teachers to take practical steps during regular lessons to help their students learn and improve their academic outcomes. As a principal of a Christian school I welcome a less crowded curriculum to allow our teachers to share a Christian perspective.

There was a real positive and exciting atmosphere during both mornings amongst the parents, students and teachers.

The children played with new friends and made some craft to take home.

Next Wednesday, our Kindergarten students and parents will join us once more for another morning at school. We look forward to partnering with parents to care for and teach these precious children in the coming years.

Due to the hall being renovated this year, the Madagascar musical last term, and FONO this term, we haven’t been able to hold PIPE this year. Therefore this assembly will give an opportunity for some of our Junior School students to perform to an audience. 

Performing at this assembly will be the Junior School Concert Band, String Ensemble, Junior School Choir, Shire Dance Groups and all our Year 4 students involved in the instrumental program. This will be a great opportunity to enjoy music and dance performances by students who have been working hard all year. Parents are invited to attend.

The second largest cost to the school is maintenance of the site, buildings and facilities, required to maintain an attractive learning environment for students.

Nonetheless we understand the financial demands placed on families and seek to keep fees as low as possible while providing an affordable high-quality Christian education. In comparison to similar independent schools, Shire Christian has one of the lowest fee structures and is among the most generous providers of sibling discounts.

The average fee increase for 2020 will be 3.3%. In dollar terms, this equates to a modest increase of approximately $279 per student. As you can see from the graph below, the average increase in 2020 is lower than in previous years.

The sibling discount for a second enrolled child will reduce from 25% to 20%. Discounts for third and subsequent enrolled children remain unchanged. Camp and activity levies for the Junior school also remain unchanged, and you may have noticed that the cost of excursions other than some optional activities is now covered by your fees.

The technology levy will reduce from $600 to $300 for those families with students who are transitioning to the Chromebook program. Students who are already on the Chromebook program will receive an upgraded larger-screen device in 2020. A separate announcement will be made about this soon.

You will be aware from media reports that the Federal Government has developed a new funding model for independent schools. The new model will use actual family income data from the ATO to calculate a ‘capacity to contribute score’ for the school. This model comes into force in 2023 and we expect that it will result in lower government funding. This will put upward pressure on fees so if you have concerns about this, you may wish to consider writing to your local federal member of parliament.

Four members of the team prepared the following match report. 

On Thursday 7th November, The Primary Cricket team spent a day out at Heathcote Oval playing Cedars Christian College in their semi-final match.

Cedars won the toss and elected to bowl. Shire's opening batters were Balin and Luke and they created a wonderful foundation for our innings. At the halfway mark we were 1/42. This meant we were able to pick up our scoring rate in the second 10 overs. Balin top scored with an outstanding 41 runs, strongly supported by Luke, Lucas, Ryan, Bailey and Charlie. As a result, Shire scored a very competitive 5/100 in 20 overs.

Cedars batsmen started strongly without the loss of a wicket. After 10 overs Cedars were 0/44. This meant that Shire had to continue to bowl as tightly as they were bowling in the first half. It wasn't long until Shire took their first wicket, a great catch by Bailey off the bowling of Lucas. This caused a mini batting collapse for Cedars, losing 5 wickets, and still requiring 24 runs from 12 balls. A great last 2 overs from Clayton and Ryan restricted Cedars to 7/89.

It was a tremendous team effort! Balin and Lucas captained the team extremely well, leading them to a win and kept the team’s spirit up.

Thank you to all the parents who came and supported the team. Congratulations to Cedars who showed great sportsmanship throughout the game. Shire's next game is the grand final, with the opposition yet to be decided.

The Under 15s took on three other schools throughout the day and the boys performed exceptionally well, winning two out of the three games they played. Unfortunately, they missed out on progressing to the semi final.

Shire Opens Boys Cricket Team also had an awesome day of cricket at The Ridge. Despite losing to both Inaburra and William Carey, the team played admirably.

Special mentions go to Jonah van Waart for some exceptional wicket keeping, Josh Bell who captained the team with insight, Ben Pizel for taking some hard catches in the deep, Matthew Thompson for some solid batting and Aiden Bartlett for some outstanding big hitting.

John came from the Isle of Lewis in Scotland to serve with Christian Witness to Israel (CWI) in Sydney, which later led to his being Inducted as the Pastor of the Bondi Presbyterian Church when I was ministering adjacent to him at Rose Bay. Just hearing the reflections on his life at his Funeral Service was almost as encouraging and inspiring as knowing him had been.

John was a quiet, humble and obedient servant of the Lord Jesus Christ and a man with almost the same passion for the salvation of the Jews as the Apostle Paul who wrote: “I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, those of my own race, …” (Romans 9:1-2) and “Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.” (Romans 10:1).

John persevered in taking every opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus, the Messiah, with Jewish people - including targeted door-to-door evangelism and  weekly ministry in Bondi Junction Mall - labouring for many years with seemingly little response. He met with a small group of Rabbis every Sabbath (Saturday) morning, because they wanted to familiarise themselves with the teaching of the New Testament, but his impression was that it was, for them, just an academic exercise, bearing out Paul’s own experience that ‘a veil’ seemed to ‘cover their hearts’ (cf 2 Corinthians 4:15-16). In spite of seeing little or no actual evidence of ‘the veil being taken away’, John persevered with these contacts, accompanied by the living testimony of his own life, and, as we reflected at the graveside on the hope of resurrection, I couldn’t help but picture at least some of these Rabbis greeting him at the throne of grace in heaven because God has promised that his Word “will not return to him empty”, but will accomplish what he desired and achieve the purpose for which he sent it.” (cf Isaiah 55:11)!

So, let us never give up on sharing the Good News with others, wherever and whenever we can. It is amazing the way the all-powerful Holy Spirit can bless even our feeble, stumbling efforts to draw people to himself, even if we have to wait until we get to heaven before we make this discovery. Paul himself had realised that all that God requires of us is to “prove faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2). After all, Jesus’ parable in Matthew 25:14-30, doesn’t include the statement, “Well done, good and successful servant, enter into the joy of your Lord.”! As Paul so helpfully observed, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow.” (1 Corinthians 3:6).

Let us be encouraged by being able to make use of all the little opportunities that God gives us to serve him and tell others about him, and let us learn to entrust the outcome of our efforts to him alone.

The Digital Cadetship Program gives you an opportunity to practise and develop your skills while you’re still studying. You’ll get to work in the industry while you finish studying and get a leg-up for a successful digital or technical career with the Australian Government.

The Digital Cadetship Program is for Australian citizens who are currently studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a digital or technology-related field.

If you’ve completed 1st year (or equivalent) of your degree you can apply for the digital cadetship program.

If you’re currently studying one of the listed degrees then you should consider applying.

Double and honours degrees in these fields are also accepted.

If your degree is not listed but you believe it’s suited to a digital cadetship placement please get in touch to discuss your options.
