Creating a caring community

Mr Brett Hartley

Every one of our students is fearfully and wonderfully made by God, each with their own personalities, skills and interests. What a blessing that our students can come to school and be lovingly taught by Christian teachers in a meaningful partnership with their parents. The relationships that are forged hopefully create a school community where children feel that they belong and are emotionally safe, allowing them to learn and achieve academically.

Creating an environment like this doesn't just happen naturally or by chance. Despite the many wonderful skills and attributes God gives us, we aren't perfect. There are times when we don't see things clearly, we make mistakes, we sin. Therefore we need to put time and effort into building a loving, caring community.

1 to 1 devices launched for Years 3-6

During the past two weeks, we have launched our new 1 to 1 Chromebooks in Years 3 - 6. These devices will be used at school to enhance and support learning across all Key Learning Areas, to engage students and to provide opportunities to create, refine skills, research, present information, collaborate with others and to reflect on learning. The teachers and students are quite excited about the learning possibilities and opportunities that will occur this year.

Meet our new Music teacher - Mrs Nicole George

Where have you studied and worked?

I studied a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education at New South Wales University - with Mr David Stonestreet! Since then I have worked in faraway lands and schools: Carlingford Highschool and for 26 years at Freeman Catholic College. Shire Christian is the only school I have worked at which is close to home, how exciting!

Meet new Year 3 teacher - Mrs Eloise Beresford

Could you please tell us a bit about yourself?

I grew up in the Sutherland Shire, and haven’t gone too far, as I now live in Gymea. I attended Shire Christian School for high school so its lovely and feels a bit surreal to be back but now working here. My husband and I attend Gymea Baptist Church and I serve in music ministry and have been doing so for a number of years.

Swimming carnival modified after rain

It’s always disappointing cancelling a carnival and this year’s Primary Swimming Carnival was no exception. I love seeing students participating, bouncing with nervous apprehension and challenging themselves to do something they wouldn’t normally do. Tuesday’s modified qualifying races saw around 55 students doing just that, but on a much smaller scale.

Boys football team take confidence away from narrow loss

On Wednesday the Shire Christian Open Boys football team ventured to St Joseph's College at Hunters Hill for a match in the CIS Knockout Cup. The boys were impressed from the outset by the impressive facilities and picture-perfect fields and certainly matched it with their 'more fancied' opponents.

Our Prayer Mentor in Gethsemane

My Pastor at our Church last Sunday preached on Jesus’ prayer in the Garden of Gethsemane in Matthew 26:36-46. He pointed out how Jesus showed us the essence of prayer. It is a reflection of the Gospel. In the Gospel, our Heavenly Father takes us as we are, ‘warts and all’, and accepts us into his family as his beloved children because of what Jesus has done for us on the Cross; when we pray, our Heavenly Father takes us as we are, ‘warts and all’, and accepts us into his family as his beloved children because of what Jesus has done for us on the Cross!

The school has been working with the bus company since last year to resolve the issues and, in recent weeks, Mr Hartley has escalated these discussions so that the problems can be solved as soon as possible.

Carpark closed in the afternoon

Entry to the school carpark is prohibited between 2:15pm and 2:50pm during school days to improve safety (buses excepted). On street parking is available if required.

The latest careers information

Welcome to Careers 2020! And what a year we have planned!

Work Experience is always a highlight for Year 10 students - and the wheels of planning are already turning! It may be a unique chance to see the workforce from the inside but it’s also a chance for students to grow in confidence as they use and develop the skills necessary to organise their own placement. The phone calls, discussions, research and emails are a critical part of students owning the opportunity for themselves. Many look back on Work Experience as a key moment in their Careers journey.
