Return to face-to-face learning plan announced

Last Friday (1 May) Principal Brett Hartley announced that after substantial consultation with staff and parents, students would begin a transition back to face-to-face learning from Week 3. The details of the plan can be read in the email to parents and more information can be found at shirechristian.nsw.edu.au/covid19.

Thankfulness in uncertainty

Mr Brett Hartley

At a Christian convention a few years ago the guest speaker shared how he once opened up to the late evangelist John Chapman about his personal burdens, fears and uncertainties. Chapman responded with some advice and a mild rebuke. He suggested that the speaker needed to be more thankful.

To advise someone to be more thankful when they have just poured their heart out may seem heartless. After all, shouldn't Christians listen with empathy, compassion and a deep-seated desire to support that person in their time of need?

Adjusting to returning to school

I would like to thank our parent community for riding this journey with us during the past few weeks and now adjusting again to returning to school. Thank you for adapting to the changes of remote learning with your children and supporting them and their teachers in this different mode of learning. We have worked extremely hard and learnt so much in such a short period of time. Soon, we will be back at school, learning together and continuing to make forward steps and improvements in our learning. Yesterday families participated in a STEM and Ninja Warrior challenge. Some examples that we received are posted below.

Helpful advice: Preparing for the return to school

Our school’s psychologist, Jair Graham, gives some helpful advice on preparing for the return to school.

Meet Mathematics teacher - Miss Delia Wu

Would you please tell us a bit about yourself?

I grew up and attended schools in the Hills District. I used to attend a Presbyterian church in Sydney west until I moved from the Hills because of the new position at Shire Christian School at the start of this year. My first visit to the Shire area was my first interview at Shire Christian School! I now live and attend a local Anglican church in Sydney's inner west.

We will not fear

As I was reading Psalm 59 this morning, a particular phrase jumped out at me. According to the rubric at the beginning, King David was crying out to his faithful God for help because he was under threat, not only because his own life was at stake as Saul’s bloodthirsty troops surrounded his house, but because his reputation as the spiritual leader of the LORD’s people was also under fire from their slanderous lies about him (see verses 4, 7, 10 & 12). David’s trust in his Sovereign God was so firm that he was confident of his power to protect him from all their attacks, and to deal decisively with them so that their efforts would be to no avail.

Vocal & Instrument Tuition as part of our Peripatetic Program

With children having a little more time on their hands due to many co-curricular activities and other non-school related community and sport groups temporarily on hold, now might be a great time for them to learn an instrument!

We’re incredibly proud of the speed in which many of our peripatetic tutors responded to the news of the coronavirus outbreak. Within days, most of our 100+ peripatetic students were able to continue on with their learning through online vocal and instrumental lessons.

While Shire Christian does not have a formal position on whether staff and students should download the COVIDSAFE app to their smart phone, the school does encourage parents to consider downloading the app onto their child’s phone. For prayer and praise

“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” - John 1:14 (ESV)

  • Thank God for Jesus, who is the word become flesh, the only Son from the Father and is full of grace and truth.
  • Thank God for the successes of remote learning and the commitment of parents to working with the school.
  • Thank God for the dedication of our teachers and support staff in providing a quality Christian education under particularly trying circumstances.
  • Thank God for the maturity and adaptability of our students.
  • Pray for those who are suffering financial hardship, families who have found remote learning difficult and those who are struggling emotionally.

The latest careers information

Year 10 students are now able to access an interactive PDF version of Steps to Study for Year 10 Students from the publications area of the UAC website. Their online tool – Subject Compass – is also a great way for students to streamline their HSC subject choices and make sure that they will be eligible for an ATAR (if that’s part of their Year 12 study plans). One of the really useful features of the tool is the option to email themselves, Mrs Buchanan (Careers Advisor) and parents a list of their subject choices showing the total number of units and their ATAR eligibility. https://www.uac.edu.au/future-applicants/subject-compass
