Effective student assessment and reporting

Mr Brett Hartley

One of the challenges presented to our teachers in recent months is how we can effectively assess student learning and report their progress to their parents. Historically, many schools have adopted the approach of students completing a limited number of official tasks such as exams and assignments. Marks would be awarded for each of these fairly high-stakes tasks and some schools would rank each child for these tasks in comparison to others in the class. NESA requires a model similar to this for Years 10 to 12; however, some aspects of this approach concern me for younger students.

Doorknock appeal goes digital

Normally at this time of year some students from Shire Christian School would be involved in helping the Salvation Army collect for their annual Red Shield Appeal. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, they cannot do this. However, in order to deliver services in the Shire, the Salvos still need to raise $100k for the year ahead and this year have gone completely digital and have asked that Shire Christian School help by engaging in a digital doorknock for them.

Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you

What a wonderful promise God gives us in 1 Peter 5:7!

I have been greatly encouraged this week as Tim & Kathy Keller have been drawing on the words of Psalm 65 in the daily devotions in “The Songs of Jesus” (aka “My Rock My Refuge”). Let me share some of their comments so that our school community might be encouraged together.
