Rather than being a group of students who are pitied for having to complete their HSC during a pandemic, Year 12 have been resilient and positive in their commitment to their studies and sensitive in their relationships with each other and their teachers. I am very thankful to God that many of these students declare Jesus to be their Lord and Saviour and seek to trust Him in thought, word and deed.

Next Thursday we will hold a formal graduation ceremony for Year 12 after-school. While parents and friends will not be able to come to the ceremony because of COVID regulations, the school has arranged for this important event to be live streamed. Year 12 will spend the next few weeks privately studying for their final HSC exams, which start early next term. Once the exams are over I am sure all the Year 12 students will thoroughly enjoy dressing up for their Year 12 formal. 

There have been quite a few ‘firsts’ in the life of the school in 2020, such as the recent parent teacher nights being run solely by Zoom. Sometimes changes in the life of an organisation that are born of necessity are not repeated because the original was better. For example, if we are unable to run our camps overnight next term we will try and organise day activities instead. While I’m sure these activities will be a lot of fun, they aren’t a substitute for an overnight camp which I am hopeful we will return to as normal next year. 

Sometimes changes that we think will only be a one-off end up being more popular and successful than we anticipated. Prior to the recent parent teacher nights, I had assumed that we would not use Zoom again. However, I have received a lot of very positive feedback about the Zoom parent teacher nights and I am keen to hear if parents would like us to try this approach again in the future. Your responses to this brief survey would be much appreciated.

School cultural events generate energy and warmth. I trust that activities day and the other events will be a great end to the term. I trust that the Lord will bless all school families with rest and enjoyment over the spring holidays.

It has been a positive term with various events and activities that have continued within the COVID restrictions. We are waiting for the NSW Government publication of Term 4 COVID guidelines and will communicate with you as soon as possible regarding orientations, excursions, Year 6 Graduation etc that occur in Term 4. We are pleased to continue with PIPE online, the Book Week dress up day on Wednesday 21 October and adventure experiences for Years 4, 5 and 6 as an alternative to their camps.

Andrew Mellor will be taking Long Service Leave next term. Mr Stenhouse will be taking 5M in his absence. We trust that he and his family enjoy this time. Devices used for vaping can be reused or disposable and some are about the size of a usb stick so can be difficult to notice. 

As parents, it is important that we have a good understanding of the world our children live in and the pressures they are encountering. To enable us to teach our children to be ‘in the world but not of it’ (John 15:19).

There are a substantial number of risks to the health of young people who use e-cigarettes, explained in a very helpful article. Naturally adolescents play down these risks, and when caught may respond “it’s only a fruit flavour”. This might be true; however, in most cases it is not. Many are ‘fruit flavoured’ but also contain nicotine. Another response might be “it belongs to my friend”. Once again this could be true but they most likely have it because they have been using it. 

As I’m sure most parents are aware, nicotine is highly addictive so consequently adolescents who regularly use vape pens will most likely need to seek medical advice to stop this habit. The practice of using vaping devices to consume marijuana or cannabis products is also becoming increasingly popular, with some reports suggesting as many as 21% of Year 12 students in Australia have tried vaping with marijuna ingredients.

Young people often obtain vaping implements via social media platforms such as instagram and snapchat. Another reason why I strongly encourage parents, if they allow their children to have these applications, to monitor them closely.

The link below has a suggested approach on how to talk with your children about the topic of vaping. Because vaping amongst young people is so widespread, I encourage all parents of Secondary and upper Junior School students to consider starting a conversation with their son or daughter even if they think that their child is unlikely to try vaping.  Prior to your conversation I encourage parents to read a more comprehensive article on the topic.

A highlight, as always, was the Year 12 HSC major works. The HSC Design and Technology students created works that met environmental needs like the Surfboard Wet Suit Cleaner, an Enviro Birdcage and an Enviro Skateboard. Other major works displayed the use of the 3D printer – a design to suit the needs of a person wearing a prosthetic and an ergonomic console for a video game. Other projects were designed to meet the need of more home storage for small spaces – guitar and art storage cabinet, an insulated storage box for drinks and a magnetic home storage box system.

HSC Textiles and Design students also designed creative pieces to meet certain needs. They ranged from an intricate wall hanging to a winter jacket with tights. Other designs included a wedding dress, an evening dress, rhythmic gymnastics leotard, a three-piece outfit and a mermaid costume. All designs displayed a high level of construction and design techniques using the equipment and materials available due to advanced technology.

Students in other year groups also had the opportunity to display their creative projects. Some of these projects were developed while learning online throughout the year. Examples included dyeing fabric with items available around the home including onion skin and beetroot. Other projects included teddy bears, cushions and tie-dyed items and some year groups produced children’s clothing and educational toys. Woodwork students created many projects that displayed their skills in use of cutting and measuring tools, sanding, joining and varnishing.

I'm very proud of the way our students have achieved so much and learnt so many different skills despite a disrupted year.

Year 7 and Year 8 were entertained and informed by external presenters on Medieval Europe. They were able to experience the use of relics like swords, shields and chain mail.

Year 9 and Year 10 heard from a war veteran and his wife. Year 9 were taught about the World Wars and Year 10 learnt about the Vietnam War. Year 10 were able to engage with a lot of war relics from the Vietnam War and get more of a feel for what it would have been like to serve Australia as a soldier.

The History Week was capped off with an historical character dress up day. Both Secondary students and staff went to a lot of effort to dress up for the day. Secondary students also received cans of drink and chips from Year 9 and Year 10 Commerce students who did a great job running their food and drink stalls.

Students had a fun week filled with informative experiences, and were reminded about the importance of History.

I took seven subjects: Advanced English, Extension English, Modern History, Ancient History, Extension History, Drama and German. 

How did you decide what to do after Year 12?

I was quite unsure of what to do after school. I was initially interested in journalism, so did my Year 10 work experience at SBS. But I had always loved English and History. I had been lucky to have some very inspirational teachers in those subjects, like Mrs Natalie Bluhdorn, Mrs Kathryn Breen, Mr Jono Nicholls, Mr Geoffrey Schneider, and Mrs Lynda Scott. So I was also interested in teaching. 

It can be very difficult finishing school, because until Year 12 there’s a clear path  –  after that, you need to find your own. The best advice I received was to speak to as many people as you can: your teachers, your friends’ parents, friends-of-friends –  basically, anyone and everyone. Every perspective helps. Doing so led me to speak to a few people who had chosen to study law.  It sounded challenging, but very interesting. To keep my options open, I applied for the combined degree programme at the University of Sydney. That meant I could study general humanities subjects (History, English and German) as well as something more specific, like law. After the first semester, I was pretty certain law was the right choice. Luckily, I’ve been able to take up teaching part-time too.

Was uni what you were expecting? Did you have any setbacks? 

I’m not quite sure what I expected! But I certainly felt like my world had opened up. There were so many opportunities and it wasn’t hard to find other people with similar interests. The university had a very active campus life, with a huge range of language, sporting, academic, and social clubs and societies to join. The trouble, really, was just trying to fit everything in each week. The academic workload could be demanding. But it was also fascinating, and I was well-supported by the faculty. 

After university, was the workplace different to what you expected?

During high school and university it often feels like there is no end to study. You can always slip in an extra hour here or there, so it can be difficult to ‘switch off’ (and that extra hour can easily become two or three). Working at a law firm is different. There are certainly long hours and occasionally weekend work. But things are much more collaborative: you’re part of a team and you’re working to solve a problem – often one that hasn’t ever been considered before by a court and that wasn’t necessarily foreseen by the Parliament when drafting the legislation. So not only is it intellectually stimulating, but there’s also a general recognition by everyone that things aren’t straightforward and that to really solve a problem you’re going to need to get insights from other people and other teams. 

What do you enjoy most about your work? What are the most challenging parts?

I do both litigious (ie, court-based) and transactional (ie, deal-based) legal work. I tend to enjoy the research-based aspects of each the most, but I also enjoy getting to know our clients and their business. Commercial litigation is particularly interesting, and very fast-paced at a firm like Allens.  We get to work on some of the most controversial issues and disputes, and they're ones that are usually all over the papers in some form or another. The most challenging aspect of working in law is probably the deadlines. Things often need to be done yesterday. But I’ve been lucky to  work at a firm that’s really taken the lead in helping lawyers balance their different work/life priorities. I’ve been able to lecture part-time at the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales while working at Allens, and the firm’s been tremendously supportive.

How had your study or work expanded your horizons?

My degrees at Sydney opened a lot of opportunities. I was able to do a six month language exchange to Germany, and through its ‘Pathways’ programme was able to start a masters degree at Cambridge before I had finished my first law degree. I’ve been very fortunate to work at a place like Allens: the training is exceptional. The skills are also transferable. Many colleagues have gone on to work in government, as in-house legal counsel, or else moved into other areas like business, consulting or academia. 

What advice would you give to Year 11 and Year 12 students considering their future?

It’s absolutely okay to have no idea what you want to do after school. It takes time, and sometimes you might start something and realise it’s not right for you. One approach is to play to your strengths: if they lie in maths and science, for example, pursue that. But remember that there are so many interesting careers and opportunities out there. These will not always be obvious or easy to spot while still at school. So speak to as many people as possible, and really do your research. In the meantime, even if you’re not sure what you’ll be doing after school, work hard: that way you’ll be prepared when you eventually do find the path that’s right for you.

• 2020: Commencing a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) in Law at the University of Oxford (Magdalen College, Oxford). Received the Justice Peter Hely Scholarship from the University of Sydney.

There are many things challenging us and working against us. We are certainly not facing the same level of ‘persecution, famine, nakedness, danger or sword’ that many of our Christian brothers and sisters are facing in other countries, but we are experiencing a level of ‘trouble and hardship’ to which we are not really accustomed. The challenge of militant atheism attacking our open proclamation of the Gospel of Christ and his claim to be LORD of ALL, and the ONLY Saviour, as well as the restrictions on our meeting together and the threat of infection with the COVID-19 virus, can easily cause us to feel helpless and discouraged. We can find ourselves asking, “Where is God in all this?”

But let us reflect on the bold claim the Apostle Paul makes: “If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” This is not just wishful thinking, but an absolute certainty: If God “did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all - how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?” Just think about it - he is saying to us: “Christ Jesus, who died - more than that, who was raised to life - is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.” What greater assurance can we need that NOTHING can “separate us from the love of Christ”? And, in case we need further ‘proof’, we need to remember that none of the ‘troubles and hardships’ we face can ever take God by surprise. As the sons of Korah had pointed out a thousand years earlier, “For [his] sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” (Psalm 44:22)!

I don’t know about you, but being of the same ilk as those whom Jesus addressed as “O ye of little faith” (cf Matthew 6:30; 8:26; 16:8; Luke 12:28), I need to read passages like Romans 8 often! Paul’s ‘logic’ is irrefutable, but my sinful nature means that my feelings are not always ‘logical’. Nevertheless, in the light of Paul’s bold claims and the clear evidence behind them, I am happy to say with him, “In all these things [I am] more than conqueror[s] through him who loved [me]. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate [me] from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus [my] Lord.”

At present, from a purely ‘earthly’ perspective, the future of our health and economic welfare is very uncertain and worrying, (and we must keep our Prime Minister and his Government very much in the forefront of our daily prayers). But what a wonderful ‘backdrop’ opportunity this gives us to demonstrate to our community the big difference our faith in Christ’s finished work makes to our attitude and stance! As Paul will write a little later in this powerful letter: “For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.  May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:4-6), and, “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13). Let us be ‘encouragers of one another daily’ (Hebrews 3:13) in these challenging days.

UNSW to offer world first bachelor degree in quantum engineering

UNSW Sydney has introduced the world’s first undergraduate degree in quantum engineering, in response to a growing need for a workforce that can help Australia share in a multi-billion dollar industry.

The Bachelor of Quantum Engineering (Honours) will train students in advanced electronics and telecommunication engineering, specialising in how to design and control complex quantum systems. The degree will cover nanoelectronics, microwave engineering and quantum technologies for advanced sensors, secure communications and computing.

World-leading expert in quantum engineering, UNSW Scientia Professor Andrea Morello, has been the driving force behind the new degree. He said an undergraduate offering in quantum technology will be key to building a world-class quantum workforce in Australia.

Smart and Skilled Fee-Free Scholarships 

The NSW Government's new Smart and Skilled Fee-Free Scholarships mean that students can get the skills they need to get the job they want and their course fees will be covered.

Young people (aged 15-30) who meet the Smart and Skilled Fee-Free Scholarship criteria are eligible for a government subsidy which covers their Smart and Skilled course fee.

Eligible students can receive a single Fee Free Scholarship in a financial year, and two Fee-Free Scholarships across 4 financial years.

Considering and preparing for an international education is a multiyear endeavour. The world is challenged right now, but preparations for studying overseas can still begin today.

• Virtual Information Sessions - International Educated will be hosting two free virtual information sessions providing students and families the opportunity to learn more about Studying in the US. This general presentation will give information regarding US university admissions and provide insight to the US university application process and the higher education system in the US. Registration is required, spaces are limited, and a Q&A session will follow each presentation.
