I may have been at a bit of a loose end and in need of something to do, or perhaps I wanted to better understand something unfamiliar to me; however, what I read was eye-opening. It is estimated that Australians spend $350 million a year on antiwrinkle injections. The article referred to a 19-year-old Cronulla woman who spends about $1000 a month on beauty treatments, including waxing, manicures, tattoo and eyebrow extension maintenance and make up.

While I don’t criticise those who choose to spend money on their physical appearance, I was challenged by comments in the article regarding the pressures that people are under to do so. British academic Professor Heather Widdows observed that a particular physical image goes from an idea to being 

……part of a moral framework, it stops just being a suggestion, or one of many options, and becomes the dominant means by which individuals judge themselves and each other.

Judging the worth of ourselves and others by physical appearance is superficial, potentially hurtful and contrary to how God views us. In Psalm 139 David wrote that God searched him, knowing when he sat down and stood up and knowing his “thoughts from afar”. David recognised that God knew every word that he said before he uttered it and that he could never escape God’s complete knowledge of him. God judges us not by our physical appearance, but by our thoughts and actions.

Jesus taught us that “…… the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45b) We can make a reasonable assessment of someone’s character by what they say, not by the number of wrinkles on their face.

Being a school principal who loves his students, I cannot help but think of the 900 children at our school when I read articles like this in light of the scriptures. Over the 30 years that I have been a teacher, in my view the amount of pressure young people are under to look a particular way has increased marginally; however, children are becoming more conscious of their appearance at a younger age. A growing number of primary school aged children regularly see images of people who have just the right look. Many online videos and TV programs ensure that people with the ideal look are portrayed as popular, funny and clever. Similar messages come through in social media. These images occupy the minds of young people and skew how they see themselves and others.

Swimming against this unrelenting tide is not easy. Our school needs to partner with our families to pray for and remind our children of how God views them and how they should assess the character of others. Please pray for our teachers as they teach and model this.

Year 6 Challenge Together Day!

Today our Year 6 students attended our very first “Challenge Together” day at The Tops Conference Centre. The goals of the day are exactly as the title suggests - work together to solve challenging problems to build resilience and relationships. This came about after we brainstormed the benefits of Year 6 Camp and decided that in addition it would be good to trial this type of an experience for the students at the beginning of the year. I am looking forward to seeing how it helps foster and enrich positive relationships amongst the students and their teachers as they commence this important year of school.

Years 2-6 will split into boys and girls groups to enhance our weekly Christian values program and address how boys and girls can respond positively and appropriately in different social situations. The groups will be led by a teacher of that same gender to be able to relate, lead and address issues and how best to respond. We will follow our Rainbow Reminders and be discussing in groups how to be kind, forgiving, patient and trustworthy. The discussions will be Bible based, tailored for the group and encourage practical ways that we can resolve various social situations. I’m excited about this new opportunity and looking forward to seeing how it develops and helps our children grow in their relationship with God, teachers and one another.

“I want to support families who are affected by cancer all over Australia,” Miss Yock said. 

Not only is she hoping to raise over $1500, Miss Yock is also planning to donate the cut off hair to a sustainable salon where it can be used to help patients with cancer related hair loss.

In order to donate the hair a minimum of 20 centimetres needs to be taken, and after two years of growth in preparation, Miss Yock thinks that her hair will be cut at least to the height of her chin.

“I’ve shared my plans with my PC group and I’ve also just shared it with the Year 10 girls. They’re really excited and keen to help which is fantastic,” she said.

“My mother is a cancer survivor, and my grandmother was as well. The reason my mother is still alive today is because of the medical research that has been conducted into cancer. She now has a 95% chance of having a long life [free of cancer] because of the research and the technology these days.” 

Shire Christian School has a long history of supporting both cancer patients within the school community and cancer research, regularly partaking in fundraisers including Cancer Council’s Daffodil Day and Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave. 

Mr Nathan Asher, who coordinates the student run CRU Christian lunch time group, said that they were excited to support Miss Yock and her fundraiser. 

“Jesus taught that the greatest commandments are love of God and love of your neighbour. Supporting charitable organisations is not an optional extra, but an outworking of our faith,” Mr Asher said. 

Miss Yock will have her hair cut off at CRU on Wednesday 17 March. Donations can be made via her Do It For Cancer fundraising page.

During Lent (the 40 days before Ostern/ Easter), some Christians take an opportunity to give something up to prepare their hearts for the Ostern season. It is traditional to give up meat (Fleisch) or rich foods during this time, so in the week before Lent, people eat all of their rich foods and party before the season of Lent begins on Aschermittwoch (Ash Wednesday). In our Deutsch classes we have celebrated this with party food, mask making, dressing up, dancing to the German song “Fliegerlied” and learning some Schuplattler dance moves. The team got off to a good start, winning their first three games before we losing to Northern Beaches Christian School. They bounced back with a come from behind victory over St George Christian School, down three nil but going on to win 5-4.

The Shire Christian team came up against Inaburra in the semi final and fought bravely with the score 0-0 at half time. The highlight of the match was a pirouetting run and goal to go 2-1 up however the side was unable to hold on and lost 3-2 in the final minutes of the game.

A big congratulations to Mathew Thompson who was selected for the Open Boys CSSA team.

The Gala Day was well attended with teams from the Southern Highlands, Nowra and Wollongong competing. William Carey was the only other Sydney based school in the competition.

There was great sportsmanship and participation from all teams and students on the day. 

We sent one team to compete and they were placed in a pool with Nowra Christian School and Southern Highlands. Each team playing two pool games in an attempt to qualify for the finals. A tremendous effort, as our team lost the first game against Nowra, however, bounced back to win their second pool game against Southern Highlands. Our team finishing second in the pool, and equal third in the competition. 

Our team had a thoroughly enjoyable day and grew in their knowledge of the game. All the students played the game in the right spirit and were good team players.

A special thank you to Lucas Wadds, Lachlan Mellor and Elijah Dundas who helped to coach and train the team on the day and in the lead up, helping to develop a great sense of camaraderie amongst the players.

After a blistering length of the field intercept try from Robinson early in the second half, the St George Team was able to hold on to secure the win.

The performance was a tremendous achievement for Saul and his team, having been unable to reach the finals in the previous eight years. They demonstrated passion, determination and huge effort, which kept spectators on the edge of their seats with most games coming down to a one try difference. 

Last year Saul was selected in the Australian Under 16’s Oztag team and was set to compete in New Zealand in April last year, although the tournament has now been postponed to September this year, health restrictions permitting.

Saul will represent Shire Christian School in the upcoming Touch Football Gala Day next Monday, before the Oztag competition later in the year.

Personal reading of the Bible ought to be the bread and butter, if you like, of the Christian life. We all know of stories in ages past where Christians would give over a significant amount of time for daily reading, and the idea of “No Bible, no breakfast” is still key for many people. 

At the beginning of the year my social media feed was peppered with suggestions about Bible reading plans for the coming 12 months. There are people out there who are clearly very organised and had created their own plans. Others offered links to programs developed by various organisations. All are extremely helpful in encouraging us to keep reading our bibles. Yet it seems for many (is it possible to say the majority?) of us, those who love God and his word, there is a genuine struggle to “fit in” daily Bible reading.

Rather than give another top 10 reasons or ways to read your Bible, I thought it would be good to visit some of the fundamental reasons why we read the Bible. 

It’s not rocket science! We have God’s very words written for us for our instruction, help, encouragement and understanding. It teaches and reminds us of God’s character and nature (Ex.34; Ps. 86:15). The Bible declares God’s love for us and teaches us that without Christ we are God’s enemies, and reconciliation with God only comes through trusting in his death for us  (Rom 5:10; 1 Cor.15). The Bible instructs and teaches us about living as God’s people, as well as rebuking us (Ps.1; Matt.7:24-28; Ps 119:9-16; 105; 2 Tim.3:16; Heb.4:12-13). We read the Bible because only then can we truly make sense of ourselves and the world. Jesus tells us that he is “the way, the truth and life” (Is 45:19; John 14:6; John 15:26). We read the Bible because it is God’s very word to us (1 Thess.2:13)  

There’s more to say, of course, but these are some of the fundamentals of why we read the Bible. Recently I’ve been doing some reading about Susannah Spurgeon, and I stumbled across a little article about the approach she and her husband, Charles Spurgeon, had to Bible reading and prayer. This stood out for me:

Their approach was simple – they believed the Bible to be true, trustworthy, and sufficient because of the infallibility of God Himself. And, trusting in the reliability of the Bible – they read it faithfully, confidently, and expectantly. Everything that they needed to know about God and about how to love one another was contained in the Bible. Charles imagined that if the Bible merely contained the words of man, it should be discarded. However, he believed the Bible to be “God’s handwriting” and, therefore, authoritative. Susie said that it was “well to ponder every weighty sentence” of God’s “loving voice”.

There are many voices keen to have my ear, but Susannah Spurgeon reminds us that the Bible offers us God’s loving voice and we should be ready to listen. 

I have several luxuries that ought to allow me to be diligent in daily reading. First, the flexibility in my timetable. Sometimes I commute to the city on the train; sometimes I drive. Some days I work at home. Other days I’m visiting women in their local church or at conferences. Whatever my day holds, it’s shouldn’t be difficult for me to find the 15 minutes or half hour for Bible and prayer. 

Second, I don’t have children who need my attention in the mornings or evenings. This brings a freedom in determining my routine. Third, I have a supportive husband who encourages me to read God’s word – indeed, he prays for me in this. Yet despite these privileges & circumstances there are occasions when I genuinely struggle to be disciplined, joyful or even expectant as I sit down to read. 

You know your own reasons or struggles in prioritising Bible reading. Another factor for me, I think, is the increasing use of technology. I get lots of my information via social media or short articles. Reading more substantial things like books is reserved for holidays. I digest so much via sound bites. 

The trap is allowing this to be the norm for Bible reading as well. With the Bible on my phone, I get the “verse of the day” or read the next chapter or section of the book I’m in, but I’m not getting the benefit of reading in context or reading more substantively. I read small chunks – which of course is better than nothing – but what I’m missing is that slow, deliberate engagement with God through his word. 

With all the disruption of 2020 it might be time to create new and profitable habits in 2021. If you haven’t yet organised your own reading for the year, why not take 10 minutes as you finish reading this to consider what and how you might read in the coming three months? If you have a plan, consider who you can invite to join you – keeping one another accountable.

Think about some changes, even small ones, you can make to ensure you can capture that 15 or 30 minutes each day for a slow and quiet reading of God’s word. It really isn’t rocket science.

All students learn reading and maths skills at different rates. Many students find learning fun and they eagerly embrace a challenge to make progress. Others may quickly grasp a new concept but then struggle to master the skill and require drill and practice. Other students may need further repetition or a slower paced explanation to achieve competence.
 

If any of these descriptions apply to your child why not consider enrolling them in BOOST for 2021, to help give a boost to their skills.

BOOST blasts off at 8am. The children come to the IRC when they arrive at school and specialised teachers prepare and assist students with individually tailored programs. They need about 15-20 minutes to complete their tasks and rejoin the playground when finished.
 
The aim of BOOST is drill and practice to reinforce and master foundational skills. Reading is focused on oral reading and comprehension with some grammar. Maths is focused on number skills; place value, addition, subtraction, division and multiplication.

Engineer Success Story

As hundreds of year 12 students across Western Sydney focus on one of the most important periods of their lives, a Rouse Hill local has proved that an ATAR is not the only way to your dream career. 

Cameron Gaul has always wanted to be an engineer since he was young but when he saw the ATAR to get into the course, he considered other pathways to university.

After hearing about the TAFE NSW Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation, an alternative pathway into higher education that does not require an ATAR, Cameron jumped at the opportunity.

He is now in his first year of a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) at Macquarie University and said he is thriving at University.

Video Game and Animation Work Experience at AIE 

The AIE Work Experience Program is a great way for secondary school students in years 10 to 12 to learn about the interactive entertainment and digital industries. The week will open the door to the range of career possibilities in the industry and allow students to get hands-on with the tools of the trade.

The Work Experience Program runs from 9am to 3pm over the course of a week and encompasses a range of activities including 3D animation, programming, QA testing and much more.
