Shire Christian School PE teacher Mr Isaac Rafferty recently returned from an incredible experience representing the University of Wollongong at the University Football World Cup in Dalian, China.
The tournament, held from 17-28 September, brought together teams from around the world. Mr Rafferty and his teammates earned their place on the world stage after winning the Australian University Games before he graduated with a Bachelor of Physical Education last year.
Although the team narrowly missed out on the quarter finals on goal difference, finishing 11th overall, Mr Rafferty says the experience was “great fun and an awesome time.”
Reflecting on the tournament, he shared that he learnt valuable lessons about teamwork and understanding different personalities, insights that he now brings into his teaching.
“I love spending time with students,” he said. “Teaching PE allows me to really get alongside them in sport and activities and get to know them beyond the surface level.”
Outside of school, Mr Rafferty continues to pursue his passion for football, playing for Helensburgh in the Illawarra Premier League.
