From the Principal

The school year has started with a flurry of activity, and it was exciting on the first day to see familiar faces and to welcome new ones. Year 11 students always look so grown-up when they present in the senior uniform for the first time. This is my 35th year at Shire Christian School (having started here as a twenty-two-year-old music teacher), yet even after all that time, I still love the sense of expectation and possibility that a new school year brings.

In our staff development week, I spoke about the flywheel effect (Jim Collins – Good to Great ), where a large, heavy and seemingly immovable object slowly builds momentum and speed, not from a single large push, but from many small repetitive inputs.

In the staff context, this aligns well with the school's strategic projects and initiatives, and it also applies to student learning, as meaningful and sustained learning is a cumulative process, not a one-shot event. Speaking to the Secondary School at assembly, Mr Collins emphasised the power of teamwork in learning – students working together, not against each other. I was greatly encouraged by how last year’s HSC class supported one another as they worked together toward their final exams. We are “ Team Shire ” not “ Team Me ”, and we are stronger together.

To better comply with the NSW Education Act, we need to change how we process applications for family vacations during term time. Mr Carter explains this change below this article.

As we start the new year, my prayer is for our young learners to experience wonder, curiosity, community and joy in their endeavours of 2026, and above all, that they grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Attendance Procedures

Attendance Procedures

Education is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. Our school works in partnership with parents and carers to encourage consistent school attendance which supports learning and helps students to develop lasting friendships. The school is legally required to keep an accurate record of attendance.

Arriving on time is important because it:

  • ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities early in the day
  • helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
  • helps students to spend time with their friends before class
  • reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents or carers.

Absences

Sometimes your child may need to be absent from school.

Justified reasons for student absences may include:

  • being sick, or having an infectious disease
  • having an unavoidable medical appointment during school hours
  • exceptional or urgent family circumstances (e.g attending a funeral)

Following an absence, you must provide an explanation of the absence within seven school days. Principals may not accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified.

You will receive a notification from the school if your child’s absence exceeds 10%. The school will work collaboratively and in partnership with parents and families to support regular attendance.

School Procedures

Absence

Parents are sent an SMS on the day of their child’s absence. A parent should click the link and respond with a reason for their absence. The absence will be marked as unexplained if a response isn’t received within 7 days.

Late arrivals

You can use the Compass app to lodge an attendance note or respond to the late arrival SMS. All students must sign in at the office if they are arriving late.

This would be 8.20am for Secondary students and 8.40am for Junior School students.

Early Departure

All Junior School students need to be signed out at the office by a parent.
All Secondary School students must sign out at the office or a parent can sign the student out.

Compass Attendance Notes

You can lodge attendance notes to give a reason for your child’s absence, late arrival or early departure using the Compass app in advance or as required.

Exemption for Leave Application

As part of our ongoing process of reviewing school protocols and compliance requirements it has become clear that the NSW Educational Act requires a stricter interpretation around family vacations and trips in non term time.

An Exemption from Attendance may be considered in exceptional circumstances such as ill health; student employment in the entertainment industry; student participation in elite arts or sport. Parents must download and complete the relevant ‘Application for Exemption From Attendance at School’ in the school documents tab in Compass or from the school website. The completed form should be returned to the school as directed on the form. Families are encouraged to holiday or travel during school vacations, as under NSW government attendance regulations, holidays taken by students during term time are generally considered unjustified/unexplained absences.

Mentees and Mentors

Mentees and Mentors

Excitingly, 2026 started with the launch of the M&Ms (Mentees and Mentors program). This initiative aligns with our Strategic Directions of supporting pedagogy and structured professional learning for our new staff (Mentees). Our Mentor teachers have been amazing in how they have been looking after both the professional aspects of teaching and also with pastoral support. We have been meeting as a group and individually, looking after both our full time and part time staff (as you can tell by the photos).

Here are their first impressions of teaching at Shire:

What have you noticed about student learning at Shire?

“The Learning for Life model fosters a love for learning, not just task and grade focused.”
“The students at Shire are extremely polite within the classroom. The atmosphere is calm and the students seem genuinely keen to engage in learning.”
“Students often demonstrate an intrinsic desire to learn and contribute to discussion. It’s not about having the “right” answer, but that it’s about trying, knowing it’s okay to be “wrong”; seeing it as a learning opportunity.”
“Students are curious and interested to learn.”
“They are reflective and eager to engage with each other.”
“God is front and centre.”
“Students are focused and care about their teachers.”

What have you noticed about how Christ is foundational to everything we do here at Shire?

“Our meetings show how students are surrounded in prayer. The teachers' focus of care is founded in Christ”.
“Christ is unashamedly embedded in each curriculum and applied to real world issues.”
“Jesus really is at the centre of all we do here. The focus on Him in staff week really set the tone of how central He is.”
“Students’ attitudes are often grounded by Christ, and teachers constantly show God’s love and grace in caring for each other and sharing the load.”
“I love how the foundational truths are taught and how these shape all that you do.”
“It has been wonderful to establish a classroom environment with Christ openly at the centre. Students are eager to love God with their choices. The way staff help and care is a great reflection of God’s love.”

We are thankful for the mentoring program which provides us with an opportunity for targeted practical, pastoral and prayerful support for our new staff. What a blessing these teachers are to Shire Christian School already!

From the Head of Junior School

Jesus replied: “‘ Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself. ’” (Matthew 22:37–40)

As part of our ongoing focus on Being Respectful, students across the Junior School have been learning what it truly means to live as image bearers of God. Grounded in Genesis 2, students have explored the truth that each person is created in God’s image and is therefore worthy of kindness, dignity, and respect.

Drawing on Philippians 2:1–11 and our Student Code of Conduct, students have reflected on Jesus as our ultimate example of respect—one who put others first with humility and love. These discussions have guided students in considering how we respect ourselves, others, and our wider school community, including demonstrating kindness, patience, and forgiveness, as outlined in our Rainbow Reminders.

We have also emphasised respect for property, recognising that caring for belongings—our own, others’, and the school’s—is an important expression of faithful stewardship of what God has entrusted to us. This learning is especially timely as we approach Safer Internet Day next Tuesday 10 February, reminding students that respect also extends to how we use technology and interact with others online. Through these conversations, we continue to encourage our students to “love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:39) and to serve one another with Christ-like humility in all areas of school life.

Building on this focus, we have also refined the language we use when correcting and restoring behavioural incidents. Rather than using the term detention, we now refer to these times as Reflection. As has been our practice, when students experience more serious consequences—such as time off the playground—the emphasis remains on reflecting on the impact of their choices, restoring any relationships or harm that may have occurred, and setting goals to support wiser decisions in the future. Reflection sessions will be communicated to parents via Compass and will be completed with a Stage Coordinator in the IRC. Compass will also continue to be used to communicate reminders, concerns, or uniform corrections as needed.

From the Head of Secondary School

It hasn’t taken a long time for the school to be back up and running. We have normal classes running, sporting team trials and production rehearsals in full swing. Our debaters are spending time preparing for the competitions that they will be part of this year. Our new House leaders were given their badges on assembly this week and the next day were helping to run house meetings in preparation for the swimming carnival.

I am going to repeat a message that I also said last year at this time. I encourage every student to find something that they love at school. As I entered high school (a long time ago), my neighbour encouraged me to get involved at school if I wanted to enjoy it. When I was at Heathcote High School I played in several sporting teams, was part of the production crew for musicals, played bass in the school stage band, was a member of the SRC and was a leader of the lunchtime Christian group. At the end of Year 10 I received the Lions Club award for the student most involved in school life. You could say I had such a great time at high school I decided to never leave. When a student is involved in school life, there is always something to look forward to at school each day.

It is also a good time to remind you that in Secondary School, the Pastoral Care teacher should be the first point of contact in most instances when you need to communicate with the school. Below is a diagram that can be useful when you are looking to get in touch with teachers regarding specific issues. If in doubt, the PC teacher can connect you with the appropriate people.

Junior School Swimming Carnival and K-2 Water Fun Day

Junior School Swimming Carnival and K-2 Water Fun Day

Our Primary students are to be congratulated on their enthusiastic participation and the wonderful sportsmanship displayed at our recent Swimming Carnival. Thank you to Miss Ashleigh Hackfath, Mrs Kerrie Baker, and the Junior School staff for organising such a successful day. It was especially encouraging to receive positive feedback from members of the public who praised the respectful conduct of our students and staff as we represent Christ within our local community.

Congratulations to Eva Posthumus for breaking the 11 Year Girls 50m Freestyle and 50m Breaststroke records, two remarkable long-standing records that had stood since 1997 and 1993 respectively, an outstanding achievement.

Results from the carnival will be announced hopefully next week, and Zone lists will be emailed out to those parents shortly after. We look forward to celebrating our swimmers’ achievements and wish those progressing to the next level the very best of luck.

It was also a joy to see our Infants students delighting in laughter, bubbles, water relays and splashing during the K–2 Water Fun Day at school. Thank you to Mrs Lothian and Mrs Jovanov for coordinating this special event. I’d also like to thank our Year 9 and 10 PASS students, along with Mr Rafferty and Mr Dixon who were instrumental in making both these events a huge success. What a blessing to be part of a Prep to Year 12 school!

Secondary Swimming Carnival

Secondary Swimming Carnival

A fantastic day was had at our School Swimming Carnival this year. The sun was out all day and it was great to see so many students at the Carnival.

Shire Christian School spirit was alive and well and we saw many talented swimmers and participants keen to earn points for their house and cool off on a hot summer’s day. A special thanks goes to our staff and the many student volunteers who helped throughout the day. Both students and staff had a fun day at the pool and Year 12 really seemed to enjoy their last school Swimming Carnival. A full wrap of results will be sent out in Mondays weekly sports email, and age champions, House champions and representative team list for CSSA Zone will be available the following week.

Jesus knows me, this I love.

Jesus knows me, this I love.

My own children all began their journey of life in this world in the 1970s, being lulled to sleep at night with the ‘dulcet’ tones of their father singing “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”  (Those of you who have heard me sing will know that the secret of the success of this cure for insomnia was that the anaesthetic aspect of sleep was a better option than listening to a tone-deaf person trying to sing solo! - fortunately, on the occasions when their mother did the singing they had the opportunity to hear the true beauty of the melody crafted by Bradbury).

The words of this song are simple, but very profound.  Even the famous German theologian, Karl Barth, when asked how he would summarise the millions of words he had published, is purported to have replied: “Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so”.  Although I find myself at odds with a lot of what Barth wrote, I could at least say “Amen” to that!

But many years ago there was an interesting story in the ‘Our Daily Bread’ devotional notes on John 10.  The author, Bill Crowder, reported that a friend had given his wife a wall plaque that displayed the words: “Jesus knows me, this I love.”  That thought really touched me.  In these difficult, confusing and challenging days, my confidence and hope are not in my love for Jesus, but in his love for me; not in my knowledge of him, but in his knowledge of me.

This is expressed by Jesus so clearly in John 10:26-30- “you do not believe because you are not my sheep.  My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.  I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no-one can snatch them out of my hand.  My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no-one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand.  I and the Father are one.”  It is hard to find anything more comforting than this.  Notice that Jesus did not say to his accusing Pharisees, “You are not my sheep because you do not believe”, as if the initiative rests with us, but rather, “You do not believe because you are not my sheep”, because the initiative for our salvation always is with him - the One who ‘knows’ his sheep by name!  As he said to his disciples in John 15:16, “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit - fruit that will last.”

All that we are, and all that we are called to do for him, are the outworking through us of his sovereign grace alone .  My ability to persevere in serving him is in his powerful hands, not in my often weak, variable and unreliable efforts.  He did everything necessary for my salvation, and even my coming to faith in him was because of his initiative in my heart; my faith in him was only ever a response to his work in me - the only thing I had to offer him was a grateful heart.  I understand what Paul meant when he wrote: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith - and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8), and why he didn’t write: ”For it is by faith you have been saved” as if somehow my ‘faith’ was something I could offer to him. Yes, “Jesus knows me, this I love”!

New Sportsfield and Basement Carpark Construction Update

New Sportsfield and Basement Carpark Construction Update

We’re pleased to share an update with our school community on the upcoming construction of the new sportsfield and basement carpark – an important project that will benefit students, families and staff and enable future improvements to facilities.

Program overview

Site establishment, preliminary and enabling works have commenced onsite.

Bulk earthworks will commence shortly and continue throughout the month of February. Once excavation and construction of the basement carpark structure is complete, the new carpark will be landscaped with final surface works, including the installation of the new sportsfield.

The project is currently anticipated to be completed in early Term 4, 2026.

What to expect during construction

As construction progresses, there will be periods of increased truck movements and construction-related noise, particularly during the earthworks and structural stages. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our school community during this time and will continue to prioritise safety and minimise disruption wherever possible.

We look forward to sharing further updates as the project progresses and thank you for your continued support.
