“The temple was covered with precious stones for beauty. There was no pragmatic reason for the precious stones. They had no utilitarian purpose. God simply wanted beauty in the temple. God is interested in beauty.”
― Francis A. Schaeffer, Art and the Bible
Even though the description is right there in the Word, it wasn’t until I read Francis Schaeffer’s “Art and the Bible” that I realised how beautiful and artistic the design of the Ark of the Covenant was. Our Father is a creative God, an artistic God, a God of beauty and wonder.

Recently, I have enjoyed delving deeper into different learning theories and how this underpins certain approaches to teaching and learning that are occurring at Shire Christian. It is no surprise that when considering how and why we learn certain things, it is so much more than mere intelligence that comes into play. I have written several times on the quality of tenacity; the ability to persist, to hold firmly to something. It is important to consider what this looks like for a student. It is more than just “discovering your passion”, or “being gifted”. It is the determination to stay the course, to be uncomfortable, to stretch yourself.
03 Nov 2023
It was recently announced that an additional Year 3 class will run in 2024. We have had strong enrolment demand in recent years and this extra class will enable more students, particularly siblings, to start at Shire Christian School prior to Year 7. Initially, we expect to offer three classes of fewer than 25 students for Year 3, 2024. With a normally full primary school this is a great opportunity for any friends or siblings in Year 3 not already enrolled to join Shire Christian School.
Submit an enquiry or apply online as soon as possible.

Earlier this year, we commissioned an independent, confidential 'experience' survey of all school parents, and Year 6-12 students as part of our commitment to continually monitor and improve the quality of education we provide to our students.
This information is most important to the school for our operational and strategic planning, as well as for tracking changes in our performance over time.
For the 2023 review, a total of 334 parents completed the survey.
The surveys were extensive and covered in excess of 300 aspects of education at the school. We chose MMG Education due to their broad experience in the independent school sector.
I am pleased to be able to share an overview of the results below.

If you’ve been following the media you will have heard the concerns that a third of the state did not meet the proficiency benchmark in this year’s NAPLAN tests. This needs to be tempered with the knowledge that ACARA made several changes this year, increasing the benchmark standard and reducing the 10-point band system down to four proficiency levels (the new benchmark being only the top two levels).

“For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do”. Ephesians 10:2
What a precious reminder to our school community that every one of our students are part of God’s perfect and wonderful design. Since our founding in 1977, Shire Christian School has made a commitment to employing all Christian teachers and staff. Not all faith-based schools do this – some schools generally prefer Christian teachers, but will make exceptions. Other schools hold to a Christian “ethos”, where the Principal, possibly the leadership, and the religious studies department hold the faith of the establishment, but other staff are only asked to publicly support the “ethos” of the school, not personally practice it.
02 Jun 2023
No matter what season of life we find ourselves in, friendships can be difficult to navigate. We have been created by a relational God, to be in relationship with Him and with others. The Bible highlights the reason why friendships can sometimes be so hard. Our own selfish, sinful hearts often mean that we unknowingly cause tension in the very relationships we hold so dearly.
02 Jun 2023

It was with great pleasure that I was able to present our very first Learning Leader awards today! This award commends a student who demonstrates a tenacious attitude in their learning. As the Academic Head, I do not simply consider the numerical results or grades that a student receives. I am just as interested in a student’s tenacity and the positive attitude that they demonstrate when approaching their learning.

Last week I was asked to speak at the 30+1 Anniversary Assembly at Covenant Christian School in Canberra. (It was the ‘30+1’ Celebration because their 30th was cancelled last year because of COVID.) They asked me to speak because I had been the speaker at the opening in 1991 (when it was called ‘Covenant College).
It was good to catch up with Tracey Foster, our former primary teacher, who spoke about the ‘Firm Foundation’ of Christian education, and also with a whole lot of other people who have strong connections with Shire Christian School. The Principal, Martin Keast, and the Business Manager, Tim James, spoke of how appreciative they were of the help and support given by Shire Christian School during some difficult times they had faced during the three decades of operation.

05 Aug 2022
You would probably have heard by now that on the recent Census, Christianity became a minority held position for the first time. I have reflected many times on the change in Australian non-religious society’s attitude toward Christianity. When I was younger Christians were at worst quaint and harmless, and at best a positive moral influence. Later in my life there was more of a feeling we were wrong, silly, or stupid for our beliefs, but still could be left to our own practices. Now however, Christians are increasingly portrayed as dangerous – threatening and subversive to society and holding beliefs that are damaging to others, or even that our beliefs are a form of aggression and violence. It is not surprising then that Christianity is no longer considered quaint, but something to be resisted and marginalised.
05 Aug 2022
You are warmly invited to our annual display of student creative work, Expression.
04 Aug 2022
At the end of last term I wrote about the encouragement we get from God’s faithfulness in things recorded in Deuteronomy and Joshua. By contrast, I’m now getting towards the end of Judges in my Bible reading. Yes, God is still faithful, but the context in which his faithfulness is demonstrated at this time in the history of his people is quite challenging.

If we reflect on our own learning experiences at school, no doubt there will be a range of emotions. Often, our memories are not specific to the content that we learned, but to the teacher or the subject more generally.
01 Jul 2022
Over the last two weeks I had the great privilege of reading to each of the nine Infants classes. I was welcomed on many occasions with some very creative bow tie themes – it seems I will not be allowed to wear a standard necktie ever again at this school! What struck me though, was the joy, the curiosity, and the unbridled sense of wonder in our young learners. Too often we see that spark die as children grow into adolescents. Is it society? Peer groups? The education system? Maybe all of these things.
17 Jun 2022
It is not often that primary students get to be part of making history for their school. On Wednesday, June 16, 18 boys from Years 5 and 6 had the opportunity to represent Shire Christian School at the Paul Kelly Cup as the first AFL team put together for our school.
16 Jun 2022
How do we teach children to read? One theory is that for children to read well they must read a lot. In the 80’s many educators got swept up in this concept.

I was privileged to attend a conference with other principals in the city these past two days. It is a great privilege to serve as Chairman of Shire Christian School. This has been especially true during the last two years, as the professionalism of the staff and the resilience of the entire School community have been tested by the pandemic and the government’s response to it.

No matter whether we are learning face to face or remotely, we want to see learners who are brave and take risks. We love to see learners who are willing to face challenges with creativity and curiosity. We seek to develop learners who are purposeful and see value in learning and seeking new knowledge. These same qualities are those that we encourage in our teachers. Amongst the (many!) limitations that the virus and restrictions have brought to us, this has also been a time in which teachers have led with ingenuity, flexibility and compassion.

In such times as these, we seem to look towards our artists, entertainers and musicians to express with sight and sound what we as a collective struggle to put into words. I’ve heard from many students that whilst the past few weeks have presented unique and certain challenges, the simple act of picking up their instrument and playing it has been a much needed source of joy and escape.

When I meet with new parents and their children I often talk about the importance of relationships in the life of a Christian school community. Positive student peer relationships. Respectful and warm relationships between teachers and their students. Meaningful connections between parents and teachers. These relationships are important to help school to feel like family. This sense of belonging helps students to feel emotionally safe, focus on their studies and achieve academically.

As parents, how many times have we heard this phrase? You have had a tiring day, you have managed to juggle the after-school hunger, completed homework, navigated tired and emotional children, cooked dinner (that may or may not have been gratefully eaten!) and it is finally time for bed. You happily flop onto your child’s bed and have one (or more) children draped around you as you read their bedtime story. You are about to pray with them and turn off the light, when one of them looks at you with pleading desperation “Please, just one more book!”

If I could go back and have a conversation with 20-year-old me, one area of life I’d love to sort out is my daily Bible reading. Not just about cultivating good disciplines, but more fundamentally about what’s at the very heart of what I’m doing when I read.

The start to the 2021 school year has arguably been the most peaceful and positive since I joined our community in 2015. The professional development week prior to our students returning saw our teachers enthusiastically engage with our theme for the year Christian education and pastoral care. Our teachers were challenged to remember the importance of their own personal holiness and the great impact their speech and actions have on the lives of their students. Our teachers invested time considering how they can meaningfully integrate the Bible and a Christian worldview into a range of topics they are teaching. Teachers worked collaboratively to ensure that they will provide high-quality, targeted care for every student.

The simple instruction (command!) contained in these three words comes from the Apostle Paul in Colossians 3:15. Let me put them in their context: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

My connection with Greg Smith, both as a colleague and a dear friend, stretched decades. I had been teaching HSIE at William Carey Christian School for a few years when Greg arrived in late 1990s as a new graduate teacher. I later moved on, but only a few years passed before Greg and I were working together again at Inaburra School. Greg joined the team at Shire Christian School in 2016.

I was adopted and first met my parents when I was 7 days old. Couples who adopt children do something profoundly loving. They unconditionally accept children in need as their own. God adopts people who recognise that they are sinners in need of Jesus as Lord and Saviour.

03 Jul 2020
There was a time when I could confidently carry out most of the maintenance on my car and motorbike, but that is no longer the case. This is for two reasons: on the one hand, my ageing brain and dying brain cells have robbed me of the ‘confidence of youth’, and I just can’t face the challenges and inherent risk of ‘mucking things up’! On the other hand, the technological advances in the design and manufacture of motor vehicles have left me way behind and rendered me totally inadequate for the task.

Before I was married I decided to hop on a plane and move to South America. I'd never been there before, I didn't know anyone and I couldn't speak Spanish. My goal was simple and possibly even naive – to teach Economics in an international school and contribute to the work of a local church.

The English minister and theologian William Taylor gave a series of talks at a Christian convention a few years ago entitled Understanding the Times. The world, at the present time, is hard to understand. The last few days have seen supermarket shelves almost stripped bare not just of toilet paper, but all sorts of food from tinned vegetables to fresh meat. International airline travel has almost ground to halt. Because gatherings of more than 100 people are not allowed, church services, weddings and even funerals are being cancelled.

The Federal Government's strategy to manage the public health threats posed by the coronavirus include safe hygiene practices, social distancing, stating that gatherings of more than 500 people should not occur and requiring anyone arriving in Australia to self-isolate for 2 weeks. I received formal advice from the NSW Chief Health Officer, Dr Chant, last night that schools should remain open. In response to that advice, and other reliable sources of information, the school executive met for a substantial amount of time this morning to determine how the school will respond to the challenges the coronavirus has placed on us. I also provide you with the most recent advice from the Federal Government.

I was very encouraged to see so many parents at our recent annual parent engagement evenings. Our focus area for 2020 is 'successful learning: how can data help?' I trust that the plenary sessions helped parents to appreciate that our teachers take information about our students seriously and invest time making adjustments to their teaching practice to cater to student need. Where the data reveals a possible weakness, we are keen to acknowledge this weakness and take specific steps to address it.

These devices will be used at school to enhance and support learning across all Key Learning Areas, to engage students and to provide opportunities to create, refine skills, research, present information, collaborate with others and to reflect on learning. The teachers and students are quite excited about the learning possibilities and opportunities that will occur this year.
21 Feb 2020
Every one of our students is fearfully and wonderfully made by God, each with their own personalities, skills and interests. What a blessing that our students can come to school and be lovingly taught by Christian teachers in a meaningful partnership with their parents. The relationships that are forged hopefully create a school community where children feel that they belong and are emotionally safe, allowing them to learn and achieve academically.
Creating an environment like this doesn't just happen naturally or by chance. Despite the many wonderful skills and attributes God gives us, we aren't perfect. There are times when we don't see things clearly, we make mistakes, we sin. Therefore we need to put time and effort into building a loving, caring community.

While you would normally expect a school to be quiet over the Christmas holiday period, this was far from the case at Shire Christian this year. A team of builders, carpenters, electricians and alike, with the support of the school maintenance team, was hard at work to complete a number of renovation projects in time for students to return in January.
08 Feb 2019
One of the joys of being a principal is having the opportunity to mix with students in the playground, chat to parents while I am on morning bus duty and visit classrooms. Over the last week and a half I have gained a real sense of warm community and active learning in the life of the school, whether that be the kindergarten girl who grabbed my leg to say hello, kicking a soccer ball (badly) with some secondary school boys, mixing with parents at the Year 7 laptop launch night or visiting a class and seeing lots of focused students.

It was a real pleasure and privilege to be able to share devotions with the staff during staff week as we begin this new school year. Until I joined in this activity, I hadn’t realised just how emotionally attached I still am to the life of our school, even two years after ‘retiring’ as Chaplain. God is obviously still powerfully at work among us, giving strength and direction and grace for the task he has entrusted to our wonderful, godly staff.
